                    Catrina POV:
“Lyra? My love… is that you?”
Damien’s voice was full of shock. I could hear the fear in it.
He stumbled back, his hands raised, his crimson eyes wide. He was staring at me, at the silver wolf I’d become.
But I wasn’t just Lyra. I was Catrina, too. And my wolf, who’d always been so timid, now roared with a power that shook the whole chamber. It was the fierce, protective love of a mother.
“He’s afraid, Catrina.” Lyra’s voice was strong and sure, a whisper in my mind.
It was like a warm current flowing through me, making me stronger, sharper. He didn’t expect this. “He thought he could control you, but he was wrong.”
I circled Damien, my silver fur gleaming in the green light. My amber eyes, now flecked with gold, narrowed.
I could feel the dark energy of his magic swirling around him. But I wasn’t scared anymore.
“You thought I was weak, Damien,” I snarled, my voice a deep growl.
It was a sound I’d never made before, a mix of my own voice and Lyra’s, powerful and commanding. “You thought you could use me. You thought you could take my son. You were wrong.”
Suddenly a sharp, painful memory flashed through my mind.
“I don’t know what’s wrong, Mom.”
I was eighteen, standing naked in the moonlight, shivering with fear and shame. I couldn’t look at my mother.
“I’m a failure. A disappointment.”
It was my birthday, the night I was supposed to shift for the first time, to become a wolf. But nothing happened. No matter how hard I tried, the shift wouldn't come.
“What’s wrong with me?” I’d whispered, tears running down my face.
My mom, her beautiful red fur shining in the moonlight, had nuzzled me.
Her scent, lavender and vanilla, was a familiar comfort.
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” she’d said. “Sometimes it takes a little longer. Don’t worry. It’ll happen.”
But it didn’t happen. Days turned into weeks, and I still couldn’t shift. Finally, my parents took me to the doctor for wolves. His verdict, delivered with a pity that made me want to die, shattered my world.
“You’re an omega, Catrina,” he’d said. “Your wolf… she’s dormant. Weak. She might never come out.”
I felt like my world was ending. An omega. The weakest kind of wolf. Useless. Worthless.
I’m just a… a breeder. A pawn for the Alphas to use.
The thought terrified me. My parents had protected me from the cruelty of the pack, but now they were gone, banished. I was alone, vulnerable, an easy target for any Alpha who wanted to… use me.
And it happened, just like I feared. I got pregnant.
And the father was Rowan Magnus, the Alpha heir of the Magnus pack. It was a cruel joke, a reminder that I was weak, that I couldn’t resist an Alpha’s power.
Even after he rejected me, after he chose someone else, my wolf still yearned for him. It was a constant ache in my heart.
“Lyra!”
Damien’s voice snapped me back to the present. It was sharp with surprise, but also with a longing that made me recoil.
I blinked, my vision clearing. The memories faded, replaced by a fierce clarity, a surge of Lyra’s power.
“Don’t call me that!” I snarled. My voice was a deep growl, powerful and threatening. “You don’t get to say her name. You don’t get to control her, to twist her memory for your own sick pleasure.”
Damien took a step back. He was off balance, unsure.
“You… you’re different,” he stammered. “Your scent… your eyes… your power… It’s… it’s her. But it’s also… not.”
“I am not Lyra, Damien,” I growled, my silver fur bristling. My claws dug into the stone floor. “I carry her memories, her pain, her love. But I’m also Catrina. And I won’t be your pawn.”
I lunged. Damien was surprised, and I slammed into him, my shoulder hitting his chest.
He crashed against the wall, and I heard a grunt of pain. He staggered, his eyes blazing with fury, but I saw fear there too. It gave me a rush of confidence.
“You can’t control me, Damien,” I snarled. “You can’t control her. Lyra’s spirit is free. And she’s fighting back.”
I circled him, a predator stalking its prey.
Lyra’s instincts were flowing through me, her experience guiding my movements.
Damien struggled to his feet, blood trickling from a cut on his lip.
“She betrayed me, Catrina,” he hissed, his voice full of bitterness. “She chose a weak, useless omega over me. Over our destiny. And now… you’ll pay for her betrayal.”
He raised his hand, and a bolt of dark energy shot towards me. I dodged it easily. Lyra’s agility, her knowledge of magic, flowed through me.
“She chose love, Damien,” I snarled. “A love you, with your twisted heart, could never understand.”
I lunged again, my claws raking his face. He roared in pain, staggering back, his hand flying to the gash on his cheek.
“You’ll regret this, Catrina,” he snarled, his eyes blazing with fury. “You and your Alpha. You’ll both pay.”
“We’re not afraid of you, Damien,” I growled. My voice was strong, steady. “You might have power, but we have something you’ll never have. We have love. We have loyalty. We have each other.”
He laughed, a harsh, brittle sound.
“Foolish omega,” he scoffed. “Love won’t save you. It won’t save your pup. It won’t save your Alpha.”
“Don’t listen, Catrina.” Lyra's voice was stronger now, full of determination. “He’s trying to manipulate you, to use your doubts. You’re stronger than him. We’re stronger. Together.”
“I need your help, Lyra,” I whispered back. Our wolves, our voices, merged into one.
“I’m here, Catrina.” Her strength flowed through me, a warm current of power.
I lunged again, a blur of silver fur and flashing claws. Damien’s magic swirled around me, but I was too fast, too powerful.
I could feel Lyra’s strength in my muscles, her knowledge guiding my instincts, her love and fury fueling my attack.
And I knew, with a certainty that burned deep within me, that we would win.
