Rowan POV:
My father vanished. One minute, he was there, looming over me like a nightmare.
The next, he was gone, dissolved into the swirling mist. But the relief I felt was short-lived.
My gaze snapped to Catrina. She stood facing Damien, her body trembling. Her eyes were wide with fear, but there was a new fire burning in them. A strength I'd never seen before.
She’s changing. Something is happening. My wolf growled, a mix of awe and worry in his voice.
“Lyra,” Damien whispered. His voice was full of longing, maybe even fear. “My love… is that you?”
Catrina didn’t answer. She stood frozen, staring at Damien, her body tense.
I raced to the altar where Lucas lay, scooping him into my arms. He was cold, still. Panic choked me, a primal fear stealing my breath.
“Lucas!” I cried, my voice raw and desperate. “No… please, no…”
“He’s alive, Rowan,” a voice whispered. It was Vivian, her ghostly form shimmering beside me. Her green eyes were sad, but also strangely peaceful.
“What?” I choked out, my voice hoarse. “But he’s not… he’s not moving. He’s not…”
“He’s alive,” she repeated, her voice firm and reassuring.
“He’s just… between worlds. Caught in the middle of Damien’s magic and Catrina’s… awakening. He’ll be fine. Trust me.”
“Trust you?” I spat, bitterness twisting my words.
How could I trust the woman who had abandoned me, who had left me to grow up with him?
“I did what I had to do, Rowan,” Vivian said sadly. Her eyes reflected my own pain.
“It was a difficult choice, but I never abandoned you. I’ve always been watching over you, protecting you.”
“Protecting me?” I scoffed. “Where were you when he… when he…” My voice broke. The memories of my father’s madness, of the night I had to kill him, were a wound that refused to heal.
“I was there, Rowan,” Vivian whispered. “I was there that night. And I’m here now. With you, Catrina, and Lucas. We’re family. And we’ll face this together.”
Her words offered a glimmer of comfort, but I still felt the sting of betrayal, the ache of a bond that had been broken for far too long.
“Step back!”
Lyra’s voice, a fierce roar, echoed through the chamber.
I snapped out of my memories, my gaze drawn to the battle between her and Damien.
“We have to give them space, Rowan,” Isabelle said urgently. Her voice brought me back to the present, to the need to protect Lucas, to trust Catrina, to believe in the power she was unleashing.
Isabelle and Carson stood beside me, their faces grim, their wolves tense.
King Korvash and his warriors were there too, their presence a wave of strength and power.
“She’s fighting for him, Rowan,” King Korvash said, his eyes fixed on Lyra. His voice was a low rumble, full of admiration. “She won’t give up.”
He was right. I could see the fire in Catrina's eyes, the fierce love that drove her.
She was a warrior, my mate, my Luna. She defied all the expectations, all the rules that said omegas were weak.
“She’s magnificent.” My wolf growled, full of pride. He was awed by her power, a power that even he, an Alpha, had to respect.
The battle was a blur of motion. Silver and shadow clashed, claws and fangs met dark magic.
Spells exploded with the force of thunder, the air crackling with energy and the stench of blood.
Lyra moved with a speed and grace I’d never seen. It was like a deadly dance, a whirlwind of silver fury.
“You can’t win, Damien,” she snarled, her voice a deep, powerful growl. “
Your magic is fading. You’re losing control. The shadows are leaving you.”
“You think you’ve won, Lyra?” Damien roared, desperation lacing his voice. His eyes blazed with fury, but underneath, I saw fear. His power was slipping away.
“You think love can conquer all? Love is a curse! It will destroy you, just like it destroyed her! Just like it will destroy him!”
He pointed at me, his gaze full of venom, his words aimed at the bond between Catrina and me.
“You’re wrong, Damien,” Lyra snarled, her silver fur bristling, her amber eyes shining with a light that pushed back the shadows. “Love is not a curse. It’s a blessing. It gives us strength, hope, and resilience. And you can’t defeat it.”
She lunged, a whirlwind of silver fury, her claws raking across Damien’s chest. He howled in pain, blood splattering against the stone floor.
The chamber trembled, the air vibrating with the intensity of their battle. It was a clash of ancient magic and primal power, a fight that spanned lifetimes.
And then, with a deafening roar, the temple started to collapse.
The walls crumbled, the ceiling cracked, the shadows danced, and the spirit realm itself seemed to be tearing apart.
“Catrina!” I screamed, terror ripping through me. The thought of losing her, of seeing her swallowed by the collapsing temple, was unbearable.
“No!”
But she was gone.
The dust settled, the rubble piled high, and the eerie green glow faded, replaced by the cold moonlight shining through the holes in the shattered ceiling.
Catrina was nowhere to be seen.
“Catrina!” I roared, my voice full of despair.
My wolf paced frantically, searching for her scent, her warmth, anything to prove she was alive.
“Where is she?”
“She’s gone, Rowan,” Isabelle said softly, her voice confirming my worst fear.
“Damien’s magic… it destabilized everything. The temple… it’s gone. Collapsed back into… nothingness.”
“No,” I whispered, my legs giving way beneath me. The grief, the loss, was crushing. “She can’t be… She promised… she promised she’d come back.”
“Rowan,” Vivian said, her voice a gentle caress. “She’s not gone. Not completely. Her spirit… it’s still here. I can feel it.”
I looked up at her, her ghostly form shimmering in the moonlight. Her green eyes were sad, but there was a flicker of hope in them.
“What… what do you mean?” I stammered, clinging to her words.
“She’s… changing, Rowan,” she explained, her gaze fixed on the pile of rubble where Catrina had vanished.
“Her soul… Lyra’s soul… they’re merging. It’s a delicate process, a dangerous one. But she’s strong, Rowan. She’ll find her way back. Trust her.”
As the moon, a silver crescent in the dark sky, shone down on the ruins of the temple, I held onto Vivian’s words, to the tiny flicker of hope she’d offered.
She’ll come back to me. She has to. My wolf growled, his voice full of determination.
Our story wasn’t over.
