Rowan POV:
“I want to turn back time.”
I said it, the words hanging in the air, a challenge to everything. King Korvash stared at me, his icy blue eyes narrowed.
His silence was heavy, a measure of how crazy, how impossible, my request was.
We were in his private chamber, deep in the heart of a mountain.
Ancient symbols were carved on the walls, and the air thrummed with magic and power. It made my wolf uneasy.
“This is a place of secrets, Rowan. Be careful what you wish for.” My wolf growled, a warning rumbling in my chest.
“What did you say, Alpha?” Korvash finally asked. His voice was deep, a rumble that echoed my wolf’s growl.
“You heard me, Korvash,” I said, my voice firm.
The desperation clawing at me, the grief for Catrina, fueled my determination.
“I want to turn back time. I want to… undo everything. I want… a second chance.”
A flicker of something crossed Korvash’s face.
Amusement? Pity? He’d seen centuries of werewolves making foolish choices.
Maybe he was thinking I was just another one.
“Time is a river, Rowan,” he said, his voice low, a whisper of ancient wisdom.
“It flows in one direction. Forward. Always. To try to change its course… that’s a dangerous game. Even I can’t fully control the consequences.”
“I know it’s dangerous,” I said, my voice rough.
The memory of Catrina, lifeless, her then turned, silver hair shining against her pale skin… it was a constant ache. “But I’ll take the risk. I’ll pay any price. I have to.”
He studied me, his icy gaze piercing me.
He was looking into my soul, judging my sincerity, the depth of my love, my willingness to sacrifice.
“It’s not just about magic, Rowan,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “To turn back time… it needs a sacrifice. A sacrifice that will change you… to your very core.”
I know, Korvash. My wolf growled, his claws digging into the floor. I’ll pay the price. Whatever it takes.
“Tell me, Rowan,” Korvash said, his voice softer now, almost kind.
“What are you willing to give up… to bring her back?”
“Everything, Korvash,” I said, my voice unwavering. “I’ll give up everything.”
He nodded, understanding in his eyes. He knew the burden I carried, the desperation that drove me.
“There are… rumors, Rowan,” he said, his voice a low hum, vibrating with power. He knew things, secrets that made my wolf shiver.
“Rumors of a ritual, a forbidden magic, that can change time. That can undo what’s been done. But the price is high, Alpha. It will change you forever.”
“I’ll pay it, Korvash,” I said, my voice hoarse. “Just tell me what I have to do.”
He looked at me, his gaze piercing. “You’ll have to let her go, Rowan,” he said, his voice heavy.
“You’ll have to break the mate bond. Erase her memories. Everything that’s happened since you met… it’ll be gone.”
I reeled back, the air knocked out of me.
Let her go? Erase her memories? But… she’s my mate! My Luna! The mother of my pup! My wolf howled, his voice full of anguish.
“It’s the only way, Rowan,” Korvash said, his gaze holding mine. He was showing me the truth, the hard reality of my choice.
“To turn back time, to fix everything, to give her a normal life… you have to release her. Completely.”
He paused, his gaze softening. He understood the sacrifice I was making, the pain I was willing to endure.
“It’s… the greatest act of love, Rowan,” he whispered. “To give her back her freedom, her life. Even if it means losing her.”
His words were a truth that echoed in my heart, a bitter truth, but a truth nonetheless.
He’s right. It’s the only way. But how can I live without her? How can I go on without her? My wolf whimpered, his pain a reflection of my own.
Memories flooded my mind – our laughter, our tears, the stolen kisses, the shared dreams.
It had all started that night at the prom.
If I’d just controlled myself, resisted her scent, her innocence… maybe she wouldn’t be lying in a Drakhor healing chamber, her soul fading.
Maybe she would be living a normal life among humans, free from the darkness of our world, the dangers that followed us.
“I’ll do it, Korvash,” I said, my voice hoarse.
It was a surrender, a choice that would break my heart, but might save hers.
“I’ll let her go. I’ll erase her memories. I’ll give her… another chance.”
He nodded, respect and understanding in his eyes.
“The ritual is… ancient, Rowan,” he warned. “Dangerous. Unpredictable. But… it’s the only way.”
The Drakhor sorcerers began chanting in a language older than time. Their voices wove a tapestry of magic, of power, that pulled at my very soul.
I stood in the center of the ritual circle, Lucas in my arms, his warmth a reminder of what I was fighting for, of the sacrifice I was making.
And as the magic swirled around me, as the air crackled with energy, as the shadows danced and twisted.
I focused on Catrina, on the memory of her smile, her laughter, her touch, her love, a light that guided me, that sustained me, that gave me the strength to let go.
“Forgive me, Catrina.” My wolf whimpered, his voice a broken sob, his heart, my heart, shattering into a million pieces.
The pain of losing her, of erasing her, of rewriting our story, a wound that would never fully heal. But this is for the best. This is… what you deserve.
The magic reached its peak. The air shimmered. Time itself seemed to bend and twist. And I whispered the ancient words, the sacrifice, the desperate prayer, that would turn back time, that would set her free.
“Let her go. Let her be happy. Let her live a life… without me.”
The world exploded in a flash of white light. And then… nothingness.
