Isabelle POV:
“You’re sure you can’t stay for dinner, Isabelle?”
Derek’s voice stopped me as I turned to leave his office.
The scent of pine and leather, his wolf’s scent, lingered in the air. It was intoxicating, but also unnerving.
“Thanks for the offer, Derek, but I really should get back to my pack,” I said, trying to sound formal and professional.
But my voice came out a little too crisp, a little too sharp.
It betrayed the turmoil churning inside me.
The memory of his gaze, the warmth of his touch, the forbidden desire that flared between us… it was a fire I was trying to put out, but it wouldn’t die.
The meeting had been… surprisingly productive. Derek, who I’d initially pegged as a carefree playboy, had proven to be a shrewd negotiator.
He understood the hotel business, the financial details. It was a side of him I hadn’t expected.
“He’s more than just a Handsome face, Isabelle.” My wolf murmured, a purr rumbling in her chest.
“But don’t forget, he’s Rowan’s brother. And you're betrothed. Remember your duty.”
Even as my wolf cautioned me, I couldn’t deny the pull I felt towards Derek. His emerald eyes, so full of life and mischief, seemed to see right through me, right through the icy walls I’d built around my heart.
“I understand,” Derek said, his smile widening.
Was that disappointment I saw in his eyes? Or a challenge?
He stepped closer, and his scent made my head spin, my pulse quicken.
“But surely even the busiest Alpha can spare a few minutes for a… more personal conversation?”
“I don’t think I understand what you’re suggesting,” I said, my voice sharper now, more defensive.
I was trying to regain control, to remind him – and myself – of the boundaries between us, the lines we shouldn’t cross.
But I was lying. I knew exactly what he was suggesting.
And a part of me, a deep, primal part I’d kept hidden for so long, yearned for it. I craved his touch, the warmth of his gaze, the taste of his… forbidden desire.
“He’s playing with fire, Isabelle.” My wolf growled, her voice a low rumble in my chest. “And he’s daring you to dance with him.”
“Come on, Isabelle,” Derek said, his voice husky, his gaze holding mine. “Let’s be honest. There’s something here. Between us. Something… real.”
He reached out, his fingers brushing my arm, and a spark shot through me. It made my wolf whine, a mix of fear and desire.
“Don’t, Derek,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
I leaned into his touch, my body betraying me. The warmth of his hand contrasted sharply with the coldness I usually kept around myself, the icy armor I wore to protect my heart.
“This is… inappropriate. You’re Rowan’s brother. I’m his… future Mate. We can’t…”
“We can’t deny what we feel, Isabelle,” he interrupted, his voice a low growl. His eyes, usually playful, were burning with a fire that mirrored my own.
It was a hunger that made my wolf want to… submit?
The thought shocked me.
I was an Alpha. A Mondragon. Submission wasn’t in my nature.
“It’s just… infatuation, Derek,” I said, my voice too sharp, too defensive.
I was lying, trying to deny the pull I felt towards him, the way his scent and his touch made my wolf purr, made me feel vulnerable.
“It’s just the excitement of the merger, the… the closeness, the…”
I couldn’t even finish the sentence. My excuses sounded weak, even to me.
This wasn’t just a passing fancy. This was deeper, something primal, something that whispered of a connection, a bond, that broke all the rules.
“You’re lying, Isabelle,” Derek said, his voice softer now, but his gaze intense.
“You feel it too. The pull. The heat. The… destiny.”
His words echoed the whispers in my own heart, the truth I’d been trying to deny.
“This is crazy, Derek,” I whispered, my voice trembling.
My body was betraying me, leaning into him, my wolf craving his touch.
“We can’t… we shouldn’t…”
“We can’t deny what we feel, Isabelle,” he interrupted, his voice a low rumble.
His hand cupped my cheek, his thumb stroking my skin, sending shivers down my spine. My wolf whined in anticipation.
“Not anymore.”
His lips met mine, and a spark ignited, spreading like wildfire, melting the ice around my heart. It was a surrender to instinct, to the undeniable truth…
“He’s claiming you, Isabelle. Submit. Accept.” My wolf purred, her fur brushing against his, a dance of power and submission, a merging of our souls.
A part of me, the part that clung to duty and logic, screamed in protest.
Rowan. The pack. The alliance. What about everything?
But the doubts and fears were lost in the whirlwind of his kiss, the intoxicating scent of him, the heat that consumed me.
“This is wrong. This is… perfect.” My wolf whimpered, her voice a contradiction, mirroring the turmoil inside me.
“Alpha Isabelle?”
A voice, sharp and startled, shattered the moment.
Adrenaline surged through me, my wolf’s hackles rising.
It was Carson, my Beta, his golden eyes wide with shock, his scent laced with disbelief, hurt… and jealousy?
“We’re caught. What have you done?” My wolf snarled, wanting to run, to hide.
I met Carson’s gaze. Despite the years of control, of duty, my heart still craved love, a connection that went beyond the rules, the boundaries.
“Carson,” I said, my voice a low growl. “I…”
But the words caught in my throat.
How could I explain?
How could I justify this betrayal to the Beta who had always been so loyal, so devoted?
“Alpha, I… I didn’t mean to intrude,”
Carson stammered, his gaze darting between me and Derek.
“I just… I heard a noise, and…”
His voice trailed off, the hurt in his eyes, the pain of witnessing my betrayal, a physical blow.
I wanted to apologize, to explain, to tell him that this… this wasn’t a rejection of him, of his loyalty, but a force of nature, a primal pull that I couldn’t resist.
“It’s… alright, Carson,” I said, my voice softer now, a wave of sympathy washing over me.
“We were just… discussing… pack business.”
It was a lie, a flimsy excuse that even I didn’t believe.
But what else could I say? The truth was too dangerous, too explosive.
“Of course, Alpha,” Carson mumbled, his gaze downcast, his shoulders slumping.
He backed out of the office, closing the door softly behind him, his scent, a mix of loyalty and a heartbreaking sadness, lingering in the air.
a reminder of the damage I’d caused, the consequences of my actions, the delicate balance I’d just shattered.
I turned back to Derek, my heart pounding.
“The game has just begun, Isabelle.”
My wolf purred, her voice a seductive promise, a warning whispered on the wind.
