Catrina POV:
"Package for you, Catrina."
My roommate, Sarah, tossed a small velvet box onto my bed.
I looked up from my sketchbook, my brow furrowed.
"Who's it from?" I asked, a little worried.
“Probably just some cheesy apology gift from Brock.” My wolf grumbled, annoyed.
“He’s still trying to win you back.”
I picked up the box. It was surprisingly heavy, the velvet soft and cool.
There was no card, no return address, just a plain white label with my name written in fancy handwriting.
“No idea,” Sarah shrugged, her eyes glued to her phone.
She was texting someone, completely oblivious to the unease I felt, the feeling of being watched.
I hesitated, a strange mix of anticipation and dread swirling inside me.
The box felt oddly warm, like a faint pulse of energy was coming from it. It made my wolf stir, a low growl rumbling in my chest.
“Be careful, Catrina.” My wolf’s voice was a soft warning. “It could be a trap.”
“Well, open it!” Sarah chirped, finally looking up from her phone, her blue eyes curious.
She had no idea about the things that lurked in the shadows, the dangers of our world.
She was just a normal human, oblivious to the wolf inside me, to the instincts that were always on alert.
I took a deep breath and opened the box. Inside, nestled on a bed of satin, was a necklace.
It was a delicate silver chain with a wolf’s head pendant.
Its eyes were two sparkling rubies, its fangs bared. Its expression was fierce, but also… sad?
“Wow, Cat! That’s gorgeous!” Sarah exclaimed, her eyes wide.
She wanted to touch it, but I held it back.
I picked up the necklace.
The silver chain was cool against my skin, but the pendant felt warm, almost… alive.
A faint pulse of energy thrummed from it, a vibration that resonated deep in my bones.
It felt familiar, but also unsettling.
“It’s… beautiful,” I whispered, my gaze drawn to the wolf’s head.
Its ruby eyes seemed to pierce through me, like they could see my secrets, my lost memories, my destiny.
“But… who would send this to me?”
“Maybe it’s from… a secret admirer?”
Sarah giggled, her mind already racing with romantic possibilities.
“Or maybe… it’s from Brock? A peace offering?”
She looked at me, her eyes full of curiosity.
“I… I don’t think so,” I said, my fingers tracing the outline of the wolf’s head.
The warmth from the pendant intensified, making my skin tingle, my wolf restless.
“It doesn’t… feel like Brock.”
“Well, whoever sent it, it’s seriously hot,” Sarah said, sighing.
“I wish someone would send me mysterious gifts like that.”
I managed a small smile. Her words, her dreams, reminded me of the human world, the normal life I was trying to have.
But it felt so distant now, like a facade that was cracking, revealing the shadows underneath.
I put on the necklace, the silver chain cool against my skin, the wolf’s head pendant warm against my chest.
“It feels… Nice, Catrina.” My wolf growled, her voice a warning. “But be careful. It could be dangerous.”
I wore the necklace to my literature class, hiding the silver chain under my sweater.
Professor Davis, our literature professor, was talking about ancient myths.
His voice was calming, but his words about ancient powers and hidden truths made my wolf restless.
“Myths are more than just stories,” he said, looking at us, his blue eyes twinkling.
“They’re echoes of our deepest fears, our deepest desires. They’re maps that can guide us, that can reveal the truths hidden inside us.”
His words struck a chord within me.
I felt a shiver of recognition, like I was on the verge of remembering something important, something I’d forgotten.
“Miss Blanc, would you do us the honor of reading the next passage?” Professor Davis asked, his gaze settling on me.
He smiled kindly, completely unaware of the turmoil inside me, the wolfish instincts, the pull towards Rowan, the fear that lurked in the shadows of my mind.
I nodded, my heart pounding, my cheeks flushed.
My wolf’s claws dug into my palms.
I was always nervous when I had to speak in class, even more so now, with this strange energy buzzing around me.
I looked at the text, the ancient words, and they seemed to… glow? Pulse?
A strange warmth spread from the page, making my fingers tingle, my breath catch in my throat.
And as I started to read, the world shifted.
The classroom blurred, the faces of my classmates faded, and I felt like I was falling into a swirling vortex of shadows and light, colors and emotions.
“What’s happening, Catrina?” My wolf whimpered, scared and excited at the same time.
“And the she-wolf, her silver fur gleaming under the light of the full moon, raised her head and howled. A sound that shattered the silence, a cry of defiance, a promise of power that would shake the very foundations of the world.”
My voice sounded different – amplified, distorted, full of a power that made the air crackle.
And for a brief moment, I saw it. Another world.
A world of towering trees and shimmering waterfalls, a world of magic and shadows, a world where wolves ruled.
Then, just as quickly, it vanished.
The classroom snapped back into focus, and my classmates were staring at me, their faces full of confusion and awe.
Professor Davis looked at me with concern in his eyes.
“Catrina? Are you alright?” he asked.
He reached out to touch my arm, and I flinched away.
“He’s human, Catrina. He doesn’t understand.” My wolf growled.
“I… I’m fine,” I stammered, looking away, unable to meet his gaze.
“Just… a little dizzy. That’s all.”
But it wasn’t just dizziness. It was something more.
A power I couldn’t control, a magic that was waking up inside me, a destiny that was calling to me.
“What was that, Catrina?” My wolf whimpered, her voice a mix of fear and excitement. “What’s happening to us?”
I didn’t have an answer. Not yet.
But I knew that the world I’d built around myself, the normal human world, was crumbling.
The shadows were closing in.
The whispers in my blood, the dreams that haunted me, the scent of Rowan… it was all more than just memories.
It was a prophecy. A warning. A promise.
And I, Catrina Blanc, was standing on the edge of a precipice, a point of no return.
