Rowan POV:
“Catrina…”
My voice was a ragged whisper, a prayer escaping my lips as I watched her, my mate, my Luna, a whirlwind of silver and white fur, battling Damien.
Her growls echoing through the night, a symphony of fury and a power that made my wolf tremble.
She was magnificent.
A creature of pure instinct, of ancient magic, her movements fluid, graceful, deadly.
“She’s everything we ever wanted, Rowan. Everything we denied.”
My wolf’s voice, a low rumble in my chest, was full of awe and regret.
I’d been a fool. A coward. I’d tried to bury the past, to erase the memories, to pretend that our bond, the love we’d shared, the life we’d built together, had never happened.
I’d tried to convince myself that she’d be better off without me, without the burden of our world, the darkness that seemed to follow me everywhere.
But watching her now, seeing her fight with a ferocity, a strength, I’d never witnessed before, I knew the truth.
I’d made a mistake. A huge mistake.
“You broke her heart, Rowan. And you broke your own.”
“Catrina! Be careful!” I shouted, my voice a hoarse plea, the need to protect her, even now, overriding the pain in my chest, the throbbing in my head.
Damien’s magic had slammed me against a tree, the impact leaving me breathless, my vision blurry.
But even if I couldn’t fight, I could watch.
I could witness her power, her strength, her love, a light in the darkness that Damien had brought upon us.
“You think you can control her, Damien?” Catrina’s voice, a deep, powerful growl, shook the clearing.
It was a mix of her own voice and Lyra’s.
“You think you can use her? You were wrong.”
Damien stumbled back, his crimson eyes wide with surprise.
His magic flickered, his control over the Bloodmoon pack wavering.
“Impossible…” he muttered, his voice laced with fear.
“You… you shouldn’t be this strong. You’re just an omega…”
“I am the Alpha’s mate,” Catrina snarled, her silver-white fur bristling, her eyes blazing.
“And I will protect my pack.”
She lunged, her attack a blur of motion. Damien barely dodged, his magic flaring as he threw up a shield just in time.
But I could see the fear in his eyes, the doubt that was creeping in. He wasn’t used to being challenged, not like this.
“She’s amazing, Rowan.” My wolf growled, his voice full of awe and admiration.
“She’s everything we could have had, everything we threw away.”
“You were wrong to reject her, Rowan.”
Derek’s voice, a low rumble beside me, made me jump. I hadn’t even noticed him standing there.
“She’s… incredible.”
“I know,” I whispered, my voice hoarse with regret.
Shame washed over me, a heavy weight.
I’d been so blind, so stupid.
I’d been so focused on protecting Catrina from the darkness that I’d become the darkness myself.
I’d pushed her away, denied our bond, broken her heart.
And now… she was fighting for her life, for our pack, for a world that I’d tried to shield her from.
“We made a mistake, Rowan. A huge mistake.”
The memories came flooding back then, vivid and painful.
The spirit realm, the battle against Damien, the love we’d shared, the life we’d built, the son we’d brought into the world.
Lucas.
“He’s perfect, Catrina. He’s ours.” My voice, full of love and wonder, echoed in my mind.
I remembered the joy, the fear, the fierce protectiveness I’d felt as I held him for the first time.
I remembered the strength of Catrina’s love, the way she’d fought for our son, for our pack, for me.
And I remembered the darkness, the despair, the moment I’d realized I had to let her go, to erase her memories, to give her back the life that had been stolen from her.
“It’s the only way, Rowan,” King Korvash had said, his voice heavy with the weight of the decision.
”To give her a chance at a normal life, you have to release her.”
I’d stood in the center of the Drakhor Clan’s sacred circle, the magic swirling around me, tearing at my soul. I’d whispered the ancient words, the incantation, the sacrifice, the desperate plea, that would turn back time, that would undo our destiny.
“Let her go. Let her be happy. Let her live a life… without me.”
And then… everything had gone black.
But it hadn’t worked.
The magic hadn’t erased everything. It had left behind these… echoes.
These fragments of memories, these feelings I couldn’t explain, this pull towards Catrina that I couldn’t deny.
And now… now she was back in the werewolf world, facing the darkness I’d tried to protect her from, fighting a battle that I’d brought upon us.
“It’s all your fault, Rowan. You should have never let her go.”
“What are you staring at, Pup?” One of the Bloodmoon wolves snarled, his red eyes narrowed.
“Scared of a little omega magic? Your mate’s about to get ripped apart.”
He laughed, a cruel, mocking sound. But I ignored him.
My gaze was fixed on Catrina, on the silver-white she-wolf who was tearing through his packmates, her movements fluid, graceful, deadly.
She was a force of nature, a whirlwind of fury and ancient power.
“She’s not just any omega,” I growled, my voice a low rumble. “She’s… something more. Something you don’t understand.”
“What are you talking about, Magnus?” The Bloodmoon wolf looked at me, confused. “She’s just a scared little omega. She’ll be begging for mercy soon enough.”
But I knew he was wrong. I’d seen a glimpse of Catrina’s true power in the spirit realm.
I’d felt the strength of her love, the fierceness of her protectiveness. She wasn’t just an omega.
She was… Lyra reborn. The Lycan Princess Damien was engaged with, and Damien… Damien knew how strong she was.
I watched as Catrina slammed into another Bloodmoon warrior, sending him flying.
Her silver-white fur gleamed in the moonlight, her amber eyes blazing with a fire that could incinerate mountains.
And suddenly, a new wave of fear, colder and sharper than anything I’d ever felt before, gripped me.
It wasn’t fear for Catrina. It was fear for her.
Fear of what she might become, of the power she was unleashing, a power that could consume her, that could destroy everything.
“She’s losing control, Rowan.” My wolf howled, his voice filled with a primal terror. “Lyra’s rage… it’s taking over. We have to stop her!”
I struggled to my feet, my body aching, my head spinning.
I had to reach her, to stop this madness, to save her from herself… but from what? From whom?
The memories, fragmented and chaotic, swirled in my mind, whispers of a prophecy, a destiny, a darkness that I couldn’t escape.
“This isn’t how it’s supposed to happen, Rowan.”
My wolf’s voice was a desperate plea.
“You changed the past, but… you brought the darkness back with you.”
I had to fix this. I had to protect her. Even if it meant sacrificing everything… again.
