Rowan POV:
"Damn it…"
I muttered, clutching my side, the pain a sharp reminder of Damien's attack, the dark magic that pulsed beneath my skin, a lingering ache that made every breath a struggle.
I was alone.
Alone in the heart of the Bloodmoon territory, the forest is a maze of shadows and whispers, the scent of pine and damp earth heavy with the musk of untamed wolves.
I’d left the Mondragon packhouse, defied their orders, slipped past the young warrior guarding my door, driven by a need that eclipsed the pain, the exhaustion, the fear that gnawed at my soul.
I had to find Catrina.
“We have to find her, Rowan.” My wolf's voice, a relentless echo in my mind, a reminder of the bond I'd tried to break, the destiny I was trying to outrun. She’s in danger.
And as I stumbled through the undergrowth, my wolf’s senses on high alert, his every instinct screaming at him to reach her, to protect her, to reclaim what had been stolen from me.
A mate bond that defied logic, tradition, and the very laws of nature.
I cursed my own stupidity, my arrogance, my foolish belief that I could control fate, that I could escape the love that burned within me, a fire that even magic hadn’t been able to extinguish.
“We were fools to think we could let her go, Rowan.” My wolf snarled, his voice a low rumble of regret, shadowed with a pain that mirrored the ache in my heart.
The emptiness that gnawed at my soul, the knowledge that I’d betrayed her, that I’d broken her heart, that I’d condemned her to a fate worse than death.
“We’ll find her, my wolf. We’ll fix this. We’ll make things right.”
The scent of her, faint but unmistakable, drew me deeper into the Bloodmoon territory, a path that led towards danger, towards a confrontation I couldn't avoid.
And then, I saw them.
A group of Bloodmoon warriors, their red eyes gleaming in the moonlight, were gathered in a clearing, their voices a low murmur, their laughter a jarring sound.
I crept closer, my wolf’s senses on high alert, ready to strike.
I needed to get to Catrina, to find a way to free her from these rogues, these outcasts, these wolves who lived by a different code-
A code of violence and dominance, a code that I, as a Magnus Alpha, couldn’t tolerate, wouldn't allow to stand.
“We’ll tear them apart, Rowan. We’ll make them pay for taking what’s ours.” My wolf growled.
But as I was about to launch myself into the clearing, to unleash the full force of my Alpha power, a figure, tall and cloaked in shadows, stepped out from behind a towering oak tree.
His presence was a ripple in the air, a wave of power that made my wolf pause, his hackles rising, a primal instinct warning him of a force that was… different.
It wasn’t the raw, untamed energy of the Bloodmoon wolves, the scent of their pack, their aggression.
This was something else. Something… ancient.
"Hold, Rowan."
The voice, a low rumble that resonated with power, stopped me in my tracks.
It was a command that echoed with an ancient energy, a voice I recognized from… from where?
The figure stepped into the moonlight, his silver fur gleaming, his icy blue eyes piercing me with a gaze that held both familiarity and a deep disappointment.
King Korvash.
“What… what are you doing here?” I asked, my voice a confused whisper.
My mind reeled, the fragmented memories of another life, a life I shouldn’t remember, a destiny I’d tried to rewrite, swirling together, a chaotic mess.
“I should be asking you that question, Rowan Magnus,” Korvash said. .
“What have you done? You’ve messed everything up!”
“Messed everything up?” I echoed, my wolf bristling, my claws wanting to extend.
“What are you talking about? I’m here to rescue my mate. To protect my pack.”
“You… you don’t even remember, do you?” Korvash’s voice was laced with amusement that made my skin crawl.
“You’ve tampered with time, Rowan. And now… the consequences are unraveling. You’re destroying everything.”
“I… I don’t understand.” I shook my head, the weight of his words, the confusion, too much to bear.
“What are you talking about? What consequences? What have I done?”
“You’ve forgotten, Rowan. Forgotten… everything.” His gaze was icy, piercing, as if he could see the darkness inside me, the secrets I’d buried, the memories I’d tried to erase.
“But I can help you remember. I can show you… the truth.”
And as King Korvash’s magic washed over me, a wave of ancient power that made my wolf whimper, the memories came flooding back.
I saw Catrina, her amber eyes shining with love, her scent intoxicating, her touch a fire in my soul.
I saw Lucas, our son, his tiny fingers wrapped around mine, his laughter echoing through the halls of the Mondragon mansion as our home was destroyed by the jealousy of the ones that didn’t stand a new alpha for the Magnus pack.
Our home, a symbol of the future I’d dreamed of, a future I’d destroyed.
I saw Damien, his crimson eyes burning with hatred, his dark magic threatening to consume us all.
I saw the battle in the spirit realm, Catrina's sacrifice, the merging of her soul with Lyra’s.
And I remembered the promise I’d made to King Korvash, the desperate plea, the bargain I’d made to save her.
“You promised to help me, Korvash,” I begged, my voice raw with emotion. “You promised to help me save her.”
“And I will help you, Rowan Magnus,” he replied, pity and respect in his voice. ”But the path you’ve chosen is a dangerous one. It leads into the shadows.”
“I don’t care, Korvash,” I’d said, my love for Catrina overriding any fear. “I’ll face anything to save her. Just tell me what to do.”
He’d looked at me then, his gaze seeing into my soul, the love and the despair, the strength and the weakness.
”You’ll have to… let her go, Rowan,” he’d said, his voice heavy. “You have to break the mate bond. Erase her memories. Give her back her human life.”
His words had been like a punch to the gut.
”It’s the only way, Rowan,” he’d said, his gaze steady, showing me the harsh truth.
”To turn back time, to fix everything, to give her a normal life… you have to release her. Completely.”
”It’s… the greatest act of love, Rowan,” he’d whispered. “To give her back her freedom. Even if it means losing her.”
”I’ll do it, Korvash,” I’d said, my voice hoarse, the words tearing me apart. ”I’ll let her go. I’ll erase her memories. I’ll give her another chance.”
And I’d done it. I’d made the sacrifice.
I’d spoken the words of the ancient ritual, my heart breaking with every syllable.
”Let her go. Let her be happy. Let her live a life… without me.”
The memories faded, replaced by the harsh reality of the present. The Bloodmoon wolves snarled, their red eyes gleaming.
The scent of their aggression filled the air, a stark contrast to the memory of Catrina’s sweet scent.
“What… what is going on, Korvash?” I asked, my voice a whisper.
My mind was reeling, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place.
“Why… why am I… here? Again?”
“That’s what I should be asking you, Rowan Magnus,” Korvash growled, his icy blue eyes narrowed.
He was displeased, disappointed. He made my wolf cower.
“You tampered with the balance, Rowan. You meddled with forces beyond your understanding. And now… you’ve unleashed chaos. You could destroy us all.”
“But… I… I just wanted to protect her,” I stammered, my voice weak.
I felt ashamed, realizing the consequences of my actions, my selfish desire to keep her safe.
“I didn’t want her to be a part of this world, of this darkness. I wanted her to have a normal life.”
“You think you can control destiny, Rowan Magnus?” Korvash scoffed.
“You think you can rewrite the past, change the future? You’re just a pawn, Rowan. A puppet. You can’t escape destiny. Especially not a destiny fueled by love.”
His words were a prophecy, a warning. They sent a shiver down my spine.
“What… what have I done, Korvash?” I whispered, my wolf whimpering, my heart heavy with despair.
“You’ve… unleashed him, Rowan,” Korvash said, his voice a grave whisper.
It was the confirmation of my worst fears.
“You’ve… brought him back.”
“Brought… who's back?” I asked, my voice trembling with fear.
“Damien,” Korvash said, his voice a lament. “He’s back, Rowan. And he’s stronger than ever.”
“But… how?” I stammered, my mind spinning. “I… I saw him… he was… gone. Catrina… she…”
“He’s found a new… anchor, Rowan,” Korvash explained. He possessed ancient knowledge, a power that scared me.
“A new… vessel. A way to… ground himself in this world. To rebuild his strength. To reclaim what he believes… belongs to him.”
“But… who? Who would…?” My words trailed off. The answer, a chilling realization, hit me.
The memory of Kael, the coffee shop owner, his unsettling red eyes, the darkness I’d sensed around him…
“Kael,” I whispered, the name tasting like poison in my mouth.
It was a reminder of my blindness, my arrogance. I had thought I could control fate, protect Catrina from the darkness. But I was wrong.
“He’s using… Kael?”
“He’s not… using him, Rowan,” Korvash corrected, his voice a chilling whisper. It was a truth that shattered my last hope.
“He’s… become him, Rowan. Damien… he’s… possessed him.”
The weight of his words, the knowledge that my actions had unleashed a darkness I couldn't control, crushed me.
My wolf whimpered mirroring the storm raging outside.
“Catrina…” I breathed. My voice was a broken whisper. Fear and regret clawed at me.
“What about… Catrina?”
Korvash’s silence, his cold, distant gaze, was all the answer I needed.
