Catrina POV:
“Don’t you dare touch him, Damien!”
My voice, a low growl, a mix of my own and Lyra's, echoed through the ruined palace.
I stood protectively in front of Rowan, my silver-white fur bristling, my amber eyes blazing with a fire that made even the shadows tremble.
I could feel a surge of power coursing through me, Lyra’s ancient magic, her warrior’s spirit, all blending with my own need to protect my mate.
Damien stared at me, his crimson eyes wide with surprise, his dark magic flickering. For a moment, he looked… lost. Confused.
“M-my love, but… we agreed,” he stammered, his voice losing its usual smoothness.
“We were going to… to…”
“I don’t remember agreeing to anything with you,”
I snarled, cutting him off, my gaze never leaving his.
“And don't call me 'love.'”
I could see the hurt in his eyes, the betrayal. But I couldn’t let it affect me. Not now.
I had to stay strong, had to maintain the facade, the icy mask of Lyra, the powerful, ambitious she-wolf.
It was the only way to protect Rowan, to buy him time.
My gaze flickered towards him. He was struggling to sit up, his amber eyes filled with a mixture of pain, confusion, and… hope?
He was looking at me with an intensity that made my heart ache, a longing that mirrored my own.
He wants us to come back to him, Catrina. My own wolf whimpered, her voice a soft echo in my mind. He wants us to be together again.
But I couldn't. Not yet.
Not while Damien was here, his magic a constant threat.
I had to play this game, had to keep pretending. It was the only way to save him.
“This werewolf… he could be useful,” I said, my voice cold. “Guards!”
Two hulking wolves stepped forward, their red eyes glowing in the dim light.
“Take him to the cells,” I commanded, my voice hard, mimicking the authority of an Alpha.
“But… don’t hurt him. Not yet.”
“Why?!” Damien exploded, his fury making the shadows dance.
“He’s a threat! He defied me! He deserves to be punished!”
I turned to him, my gaze meeting his, a challenge in my amber eyes.
I forced a smile, a soft, seductive smile that I’d seen Lyra use in my memories, a smile that both lured and intimidated.
I reached out, my hand cupping his cheek, ignoring the revulsion that twisted my gut.
“Trust me, Damien,” I said, my voice a husky whisper. “I have… plans for him. Plans that will… please you.”
I could feel his magic probing my mind, searching for any sign of deception, but I held firm, my thoughts shielded, my emotions locked away.
He couldn’t see the truth, couldn’t see the love that still burned for Rowan, a fire that his magic couldn’t extinguish.
He studied me for a moment, his crimson eyes narrowed, his gaze intense.
And then, slowly, he nodded.
“Very well, Lyra,” he said, his voice a grudging rumble. “But don’t disappoint me. I expect… entertainment.”
He watched as the guards dragged Rowan away, his body slumping, his amber eyes flickering with a pain that mirrored my own.
And as the heavy cell door clanged shut, a wave of despair crashed over me, a coldness that threatened to consume me.
“I’m sorry, Rowan.” My wolf whimpered. “I’m so sorry.”
I stood outside the cell, the scent of blood and fear and despair heavy in the air.
It was a reminder of the countless wolves who’d been imprisoned here, tortured, broken by Damien’s cruel magic.
I pushed the door open, my heart pounding, my breath catching in my throat. Rowan sat slumped against the wall, his head bowed, his hair matted with blood.
His shirt was gone, revealing the bandages that covered the wounds Damien had inflicted.
He looked… broken. Defeated.
A shadow of the Alpha he’d been, the mate I’d loved.
“He needs you, Catrina.” My own wolf’s voice was a desperate plea. “He needs your comfort, your strength. He needs… you.”
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay strong, to maintain the facade.
I couldn't let Rowan see the truth, couldn’t let him know how much I still cared.
Not while Damien was watching.
“Did you… Did you really have to do that, Lyra?” Rowan’s voice was a pained whisper, his words a struggle to get out.
His jaw was bruised, swollen.
He looked up at me, his amber eyes filled with accusation, betrayal.
“Did you… have to… humiliate me like that? In front of… everyone?”
“Was it… that important to you, Rowan?” I asked, my voice cold, echoing Lyra’s sharp tone.
But my eyes… I couldn’t control the flicker of pain, the sympathy, that betrayed me.
He can see it, Catrina. My wolf whimpered. He can see through the mask.
“You… you were my mate, Lyra.” Rowan’s voice cracked, and a single tear traced a path down his dirt-streaked cheek.
“We… we had a life. A son. A… a future. And you… you just… threw it all away. Like it… meant nothing.”
“Love is weakness, Rowan,” I said, my voice flat, emotionless.
But inside, I was screaming.
I wanted to reach through the bars, to touch him, to heal his wounds, to whisper the truth in his ear.
But I couldn’t.
“You should know that better than anyone. You taught me that lesson yourself.”
“I was a fool, Lyra,” he whispered, his gaze dropping to the floor, shame and regret in his voice.
“A blind, arrogant fool. I… I hurt you. I pushed you away. I… I tried to control your destiny. And I… I lost you.”
“It’s the past, Rowan.” I shrugged, my voice cold, dismissive.
“Let it go. It’s over. We’re different now. You’re… nothing to me. Just… another pawn in Damien’s game.”
A cruel smile, a reflection of Damien’s own, twisted my lips.
I hated the feeling, the coldness in my heart, the emptiness where love used to be.
“You were always weak, Rowan,” I said, my voice dripping with a mocking sweetness that made my stomach churn.
“Sentimental. Foolish. Clinging to a love that could never be. You’re just a reminder of… a mistake I made. A lifetime ago.”
I leaned against the cell door, my gaze meeting his, a challenge in my amber eyes.
“Damien will break you, Rowan. He'll twist your mind, your soul. He’ll make you forget… everything. And then… he’ll use you. Like a… a puppet. A plaything.”
“And you, Lyra?” Rowan’s voice was a low growl, a spark of defiance flickering in his amber eyes, a hint of the Alpha he used to be, the wolf who’d once claimed me as his own.
“What about you? Are you happy, playing the role of the sorcerer’s pet? The obedient omega? The… queen of darkness?”
“I’m where I’m supposed to be, Rowan,” I said, my voice a silken purr, a reflection of Damien’s own.
I could feel his magic flowing through me, amplifying my power, twisting my emotions, making the lie feel… almost real.
“I’ve embraced my destiny. And you… you should embrace yours.”
I turned to leave, the weight of my deceit, the ache in my heart, a heavy burden.
But as I reached the door, I couldn’t resist glancing back at him, at the wolf who was supposed to be my mate, my Alpha, the love of my life.
He was watching me, his amber eyes filled with a pain that mirrored my own, a longing that transcended the bars of the cell, the magic that separated us, the destiny that had been rewritten.
“He still loves us, Catrina.” My own wolf whimpered, her voice a heartbroken whisper.
And as the cell door clanged shut, a finality that echoed the shattering of my own hopes, I’d pushed him away, denied our bond, betrayed the love that was meant to be.
And I wasn't sure if I could ever… fix it.
