Derek POV:
"Are you a traitor, Carson?" I growled, my voice low and dangerous.
I shoved Carson back, my wolf snarling, wanting to rip him apart.
I’d followed Isabelle into the woods, my gut twisting with a mix of jealousy and a need to protect her.
I didn’t trust Carson, not after what happened.
Not after seeing the way he looked at Isabelle.
And now, I’d overheard everything. His confession. His betrayal. He’d been willing to abandon the pack, to join the Bloodmoons… for her.
“He can’t be trusted, Derek.” My wolf snarled, his claws itching to come out. “He’s a danger to the pack. To Isabelle.”
“Derek, stop it!” Isabelle’s voice, sharp and commanding, cut through my rage. She stepped between us, her amber eyes blazing, her bristling.
“This isn’t helping!”
“He’s a traitor, Isabelle!” I shouted, my voice thick with anger.
“He was going to betray the pack! To join the Bloodmoons! For her!”
I pointed at her accusingly, unable to hide the hurt, the betrayal, I felt.
“It wasn’t like that, Derek,” Carson pleaded, his golden eyes filled with a pain that mirrored my own.
“I was just trying to protect her. I thought I could… make a deal with the Bloodmoons. Get their help to protect Isabelle.”
“By joining them? By betraying everything we stand for?” I scoffed. It was a stupid plan, a reckless plan.
And it made me doubt his loyalty, his judgment.
“It doesn’t matter.” Isabelle’s voice was cold, her gaze fixed on Carson, her expression unreadable.
“What’s done is done. We have a bigger problem to deal with.”
“Rowan’s gone, Derek,” she said, her voice softening a little.
“He went after Catrina. Alone. He’s probably already in the spirit realm. And Damien… Damien is back.”
She saw the shock on my face, the confusion.
I knew about rogue packs, about the dangers of our world, but… Damien?
The name meant nothing to me.
“We’ve heard that name before, Derek.” My wolf growled, a low rumble in my chest. “But… from where?”
“Damien?” I asked, my brow furrowed. “Who’s Damien?”
“A sorcerer,” Carson said, his voice low, his gaze troubled.
“A powerful, evil sorcerer. He’s the one who’s really behind all of this. He’s the one who’s controlling the Bloodmoons. And he wants… Catrina.”
He looked at Isabelle, his golden eyes filled with a pain that mirrored my own.
“We need to find Rowan, Derek,” Isabelle said, her gaze meeting mine, her amber eyes pleading with me to understand, to trust her, to help her.
“He’s… he’s in danger. And Catrina… she’s… she’s the key to everything.”
“But… how?” I asked, my voice rough with worry.
“How do we find him? How do we fight a… a sorcerer? We’re just… wolves.”
“We need to find someone who can help us, Derek,” Isabelle said, her voice firm. “Someone who knows about… magic. About the spirit realm.”
She looked at Carson, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something pass between them, a shared secret, a connection that excluded me.
Jealousy, sharp and bitter, twisted in my gut.
“She’s choosing him, Derek. She’s choosing him over you.” My wolf snarled, his claws digging into my palms.
“I… I might know someone,” Carson said, his voice hesitant.
He looked at me, his golden eyes shadowed with guilt and… hope?
“I… I know someone who can help us get to the spirit realm, Alpha.”
Carson’s voice was hesitant, but there was a new determination in his eyes.
Here it comes. My wolf growled, his claws digging into my palms.
I knew this was coming, knew Carson had a plan, but I didn't like it.
It smelled of danger, of betrayal.
“A… Bloodmoon. A rogue. I met him a few years ago,” Carson continued, his gaze flickering towards Isabelle.
“When I was… exploring other options.”
Silence fell over the clearing. Isabelle didn’t move, her amber eyes fixed on Carson, her expression unreadable.
But the air around her crackled with tension, her wolf barely contained.
I could feel my own wolf pacing, restless and agitated. Bloodmoon? He knows a Bloodmoon?
He can't be trusted, Isabelle. My wolf snarled.
"We've talked about this, Carson," Isabelle said, her voice cool, controlled.
"You know my feelings about dealing with Bloodmoons. About the risks involved."
"I know, Alpha," Carson said, meeting her gaze.
There was a plea in his golden eyes, a desperate hope that she would understand.
“But we need their help. We have no other choice. Rowan’s gone, and Catrina’s been taken. We have to get to the spirit realm, and this Bloodmoon… he’s the only one who can help us.”
"You’re asking me to trust a rogue, Carson." Isabelle’s voice was a low growl, her amber eyes flashing with anger.
“To trust the very pack that attacked us, that kidnapped Catrina. The pack that…”
Her voice cracked, and she turned away, the pain in her scent, the grief for the lost warriors, a sharp reminder of the cost of Rowan’s recklessness, the price we were all paying for his forbidden love.
“Alpha, I understand your anger,” Carson said, his voice earnest, pleading.
“Believe me, I do. But this Bloodmoon… he’s different. He… he doesn’t agree with what his Alpha is doing. He wants to help us. He wants to stop Damien.”
"How can you be sure of that, Carson?" I asked, my voice a growl.
I couldn't keep the suspicion out of it. “How can you trust him?”
“I… I just know, Derek.” Carson’s gaze met mine, his golden eyes filled with a sincerity that surprised me.
“I can feel it. He’s not like the others. He wants to help.”
I stared at him, my wolf snarling. I didn't believe him. I didn’t trust him. Not after what he’d done, what he’d been willing to do.
“That’s not good enough!”
I roared, stepping forward, grabbing him by the shirt, my wolf’s anger boiling over.
“Have you been playing us this whole time, Carson? Is that why you were so eager to make deals with them? To betray your pack, your Alpha?”
My accusation hung in the air, the scent of my anger, my jealousy, thick and heavy.
Carson’s eyes widened, his face paling.
"Derek, stop it!" Isabelle’s voice, a sharp command, cut through the tension.
I glared at him, my wolf still snarling, wanting to tear him apart.
But Isabelle’s command, the power of her Alpha voice, forced me to back down.
“I understand your anger, Derek,” she said, her gaze fixed on me, her voice firm but controlled.
“But Carson’s right. We need to get to the spirit realm. And this Bloodmoon… he might be our only chance.”
She turned to Carson, her eyes narrowed.
“But you’d better be right about this, Carson. If this rogue betrays us, if he tries anything… you’ll answer to me. Do you understand?”
"Yes, Alpha.” Carson’s voice was a low rumble, his gaze downcast.
He knew he’d messed up, that he’d broken her trust.
We followed him deeper into the forest, the moonlight filtering through the trees, casting long, eerie shadows.
I stayed close to Isabelle, my wolf’s gaze never leaving Carson, a silent warning, a promise of protection.
“Don’t trust him, Isabelle. He’ll betray you. He’ll betray us all.” But… we’re stuck with him. For now.
