Rowan POV:
“You’re weak, Rowan Magnus. Pathetically weak.”
Damien’s voice dripped with disdain, his words like poison seeping into my soul.
The shadow warriors surrounded us, their red eyes burning, their claws dripping with that nasty black goo. They were a constant reminder of Damien’s power.
“You thought you could defy me? You thought you could steal what’s rightfully mine?” Damien laughed coldly, sending chills down my spine.
“She’s not yours, Damien,” I growled, my voice hoarse with pain and anger.
My body ached, every muscle and bone throbbing, but I wouldn’t back down, not while Catrina stood beside him, her eyes empty, her soul trapped.
“She never was.”
“Foolish Alpha.” Damien smirked cruelly. “She’s forgotten you. Look at her, Rowan. Look at your precious mate. She doesn't even recognize you.”
I looked into Catrina’s eyes, and my heart felt like it shattered. Her eyes, once a warm blue, were now a chilling amber, a reflection of Damien's magic, a reminder of everything I’d lost.
“She’s mine now, Rowan,” Damien hissed, his voice venomous. “And soon… her power will be mine, too. You and your pathetic pack… you're nothing but pawns in my game. Obstacles in my path. And I will crush you all.”
He raised his hand, dark energy swirling around him, forming a deadly point aimed at my heart.
He’s going to kill you, Rowan, my wolf howled, his voice trembling with fear. We can’t fight him. He’s too strong.
“No!" Isabelle screamed, terrified. She lunged forward, but Carson grabbed her, pulling her back.
“It’s too late, Alpha!” he yelled, his golden eyes wide with fear. “We can’t stop him!”
Despair washed over me, cold and heavy. I’d failed. I’d failed Catrina, failed my pack, failed myself. I closed my eyes, waiting for the end.
Forgive me, Catrina, my wolf whimpered. I’m sorry. I failed you. I failed us all.
But the pain never came.
Instead, there was a shout, a grunt, a heavy thud. I opened my eyes, my heart pounding, and stared in disbelief.
Brock, his face pale, stood between me and Damien.
A crimson stain bloomed on his shirt, spreading quickly. His blue eyes were wide with pain, but also with a strange sense of peace.
“Brock? What… what are you doing?” I gasped, my mind reeling as I struggled to get up, to reach him, to understand this crazy act of sacrifice.
He swayed, his knees buckling, blood pouring from the wound in his chest, a wound caused by Damien’s magic, a deadly wound.
He’s dying, Rowan, my wolf howled, his voice filled with grief and rage. He’s dying for us.
“Brock, no!” I roared, my wolf’s claws digging into the floor, my amber eyes burning with fury.
“Why? Why did you do that?!”
Brock coughed, blood splattering his lips, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
His blue eyes, though fading, were fixed on mine, holding a sadness that I couldn’t understand.
“Because… you have to… save her, Rowan,” he whispered, his voice weak.
He reached out, his hand trembling, and brushed his fingers against mine. His touch sent a jolt of warmth through me, a reminder of his humanity, his sacrifice.
“Promise me… promise me… you’ll… bring her back…”
His hand went limp, his eyes closed, his scent fading.
“NOOOOO!” I roared, my wolf a whirlwind of fury.
He lunged towards Damien, claws extended, fangs bared, ready to avenge Brock’s death.
Damien, his red eyes wide with surprise, faltered for a moment, a flicker of fear crossing his face.
But he quickly recovered, his cold laughter echoing through the ruined palace, a reminder of his power and the darkness within him.
“You… you would sacrifice yourself… for him, Lyra?” He asked Catrina, his voice filled with disbelief and possessive anger.
He was jealous of the love she had for Brock, a love that even his magic couldn't completely erase.
“For this… weakling? This… pathetic Alpha? This… human?”
“He’s… he’s not weak, Damien,” Catrina whispered, her voice hesitant.
There was a flicker of the she-wolf I loved, the omega fighting for her freedom, in her amber eyes.
“He’s… he’s… brave. He’s… kind. And he… he’s… worthy… of… love.”
Her words, honoring Brock’s sacrifice, recognizing his courage and love, struck a chord within me.
It was a love that transcended boundaries, a love that I, in my blindness and fear, had rejected.
I looked at Catrina, at the flicker of recognition in her amber eyes, at the warmth shining through the darkness Damien had woven around her.
The love he’d tried to extinguish was burning brighter than ever. I knew that she was coming back to me, that our bond was rekindling.
She’s fighting him, Rowan. She’s fighting for you. She’s… remembering, my wolf growled, his voice filled with hope.
But even as hope soared within me, Damien’s presence, cold and menacing, shadowed the clearing. He was still a danger, a powerful force, driven by a twisted love.
“You… you dare defy me, Lyra?” He snarled, his voice thunderous, shaking the palace.
His red eyes burned into Catrina, his grip tightened on her arm. His possessiveness sparked a rage within me, a primal urge to protect her, to reclaim what he had stolen.
“You would choose… this human’s sacrifice… over my… love?”
“He was… your friend, Damien,” Catrina whispered, her voice trembling.
There was a flicker of humanity in her amber eyes, a spark of defiance, a love for Brock that even Damien couldn’t erase.
“He… he died… to save… Rowan. To… to protect… your… your…”
Her voice trailed off, lost in the confusion and struggle raging within her.
“He died for a lie, Lyra,” Damien sneered, his eyes fixed on me with hatred. “A pathetic, foolish love that will… destroy you both.”
“You’re wrong, Damien,” I growled, meeting his gaze.
My love for Catrina wouldn’t be silenced. It was a bond that defied everything, a destiny I was determined to reclaim.
“Love… love is not a lie. It’s not a weakness. It’s… it’s the most powerful force in the universe. And it’s a force that you… you’ll never understand.”
“Foolish Alpha,” Damien scoffed, his laughter cold and empty.
“You think you can defeat me? You think your… love… can conquer my magic? You are a fool, Rowan Magnus. A pathetic fool. And you will… pay the price for your… arrogance.”
He raised his hand, his fingers tracing a magical symbol in the air, a promise of pain. The air crackled with energy, shadows swirled, forming a vortex of darkness.
My wolf snarled, a defiant challenge, ready for the battle that would shake our world.
We’ll see about that, Damien.
