Rowan POV:
I left Catrina in her room after everything went crazy with her stolen money and my dad. I almost thought I could spend the night with her, you know, as mates.
But when I walked back to my room, there was Isabelle, all alone on a fancy couch. An empty wine bottle was on the floor next to her, and she was drinking from another one.
"Isabelle?"
I said softly, careful not to scare her. "Are you okay?"
She looked up at me, her eyes all blurry. Her hair wasn't perfect anymore, and her white dress looked messy.
"Oh, you," she mumbled, kind of grumpy.
"Here to rub it in that you ruined your own wedding, hubby?"
I felt bad seeing her so sad, even after how she acted when she found me with Catrina. Slowly, I walked closer.
"I'm sorry about what happened," I said carefully.
"I didn't mean to make things awkward."
Isabelle laughed, but it was a mean, sharp laugh that made me jump.
"Don't lie, Rowan. We both know you loved messing things up for me."
She took another big gulp from the bottle and stared at me with cold eyes.
"You never really wanted this marriage, did you? It was all just a game to you, right?"
My throat tightened up as Isabelle's words hit me hard. They were true, and I couldn't even argue. I tried to say something, but nothing came out. What could I even say?
Seeing me stay quiet seemed to convince Isabelle. New tears filled her eyes, and she shook her head slowly.
"I can't believe I thought you might actually try to be a good husband," she said in a hurt voice.
"I thought for once you'd act like a grown-up instead of a teen chasing after a girl."
Her words stung like a bee sting. They forced me to see things clearly. I totally acted like a pup over Catrina, letting my feelings cloud what I was supposed to do. Isabelle had every right to be mad and disappointed.
"Yeah, you're right," I mumbled, feeling awful. I slumped into a chair nearby.
"I let my feelings for Catrina mess with my head. I shouldn't have disrespected you and our marriage like that."
Isabelle sniffed and wiped her eyes with her hand, then looked at me closely.
"Rowan," she said softly, her voice barely a whisper.
"Do you even know why I said yes to marrying you? It wasn't just about power or anything like that. I actually thought we could be a good couple."
I stared at Isabelle, surprised. I always thought she only wanted to get married to be important and powerful. But seeing her eyes well up a little, I realized maybe there was more to it.
Before I could answer, Isabelle's face turned angry again. She threw the wine bottle across the room with all her might, and it broke on the wall with a loud crash!
"Ugh, I was so stupid!" she yelled.
"Clearly you'll never see me as anything but your boring wife you have to take care of. You still like that weak omega whore way too much!"
I got super mad when she called Catrina names. I stood up quickly, my hands turning into fists.
"Don't you ever talk about Catrina like that!" I shouted, feeling like a bear protecting its cub.
"She's my fated mate, okay? "
Isabelle's eyes got big for a second. Then, before I knew it, she jumped up from the couch and slapped me really hard on the face!
It stung so bad my head moved to the side. I stood there, shocked, looking at the hole in the wall where the bottle broke.
"Respect?" Isabelle said in a shaky voice, breathing hard.
"Why should I respect the woman who stole my husband before we even got married?"
I felt awful and put my hand on my cheek where it hurt. Isabelle was totally right to be mad. I hadn't treated her well at all…
But then, something unexpected happened. Tears kept rolling down Isabelle's face, but she also gave a shaky laugh.
"For a second there, I thought maybe this marriage could work, even though you can't stop thinking about that omega girl," she mumbled, sounding tired all of a sudden.
"I even thought about... well, never mind, it wasn't a good idea anyway."
I frowned and looked at her all messed up on the couch.
"What were you thinking about, Isabelle?" I asked carefully, feeling a little nervous.
She looked right at me, her eyes hard. "Letting you keep that omega around as a breeder" she said in a flat voice.
My stomach lurched like I was on a roller coaster. That idea made me feel awful.
"No way, Isabelle!" I yelled, feeling sick.
"Catrina is my true mate, my equal. I would never treat her like...like some slave, that's horrible!"
Isabelle didn't even flinch when I got mad. She just tilted her head to the side a little.
"But isn't that what you really want?" she asked in a calm voice.
"For her to always be there, even if you don't respect her? As long as she makes you happy, that's all that matters, right?"
"Absolutely not!" I shouted, punching the wall so hard it cracked.
"Catrina deserves to be treated well and loved, not just used!”
I was so mad at the thought of anyone hurting Catrina, my wolf almost took over. It took everything I had not to turn into a wolf right there.
Isabelle didn't even seem fazed by me yelling. She just stared at me with those cold eyes, like she was planning something.
"Well, your opinion doesn't matter anymore," she said in a creepy calm voice.
"As of this moon, I've changed the pack rules. No concubines, breeders or unmated companions are allowed under any circumstances."
I felt like I was falling. I shook my head, not believing what I heard.
"W-What? Isabelle, you can't...that's not..."
A mean smile spread across her face as she watched me struggle to talk.
"Oh, I can definitely do that, hubby," she said in a sweet voice that didn't sound sweet at all.
"As the alpha's equal, I have every right to change the rules as I see fit. And I simply won't allow such...behavior in my pack."
I tried to say something back, anything, but Isabelle wouldn't let me. She walked towards me slowly, with that creepy smile still on her face.
"Does that make you sad, Rowan?" She teased me softly.
"Knowing the only place for your beloved omega is as either a proper Luna...or nothing at all?"
My body went cold. It hit me like a punch to the gut - Isabelle wasn't kidding. With these new rules, Catrina couldn't be part of the pack... unless I chose her as my wife, instead of Isabelle.
Isabelle seemed to notice how freaked out I was, and she ran her long, sharp fingernail down my cheek.
"Think about it, honey," she said sweetly, but her voice still sounded scary.
"See which choice you like better."
Then she walked past me and out of the room, leaving me alone with my worries.
I knew what I had to do. Catrina and I would get out of this mess together, no matter what. We just had to survive this crazy situation first.
