Rowan POV:
After everything Isabelle said, she walked out of the room, leaving just me and Derek. As the door closed, my brother whistled softly.
"Whoa, your new mate is intense," he joked, trying to make things less serious, but it didn't work.
I was too tired to even argue. I shifted back into my human form, my chest still rising and falling fast from breathing hard. Derek winced a little like he was sorry.
"Hey, I'm just trying to relax things a bit," he said carefully.
"I get it. Catrina's your mate, and you'd do anything for her and the pup. That's what makes you Rowan, the fiercest protector our pack has ever seen." I scoffed at his comment.
"But maybe," he continued, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
"this time you could listen to what the new alpha has to say. You know, instead of your usual 'argue first, ask questions later' approach."
I glared at him. "But you never had a mate, did you?" I grumbled. "Easy for you to talk."
Derek chuckled. "Hey, being around humans for a while teaches you a thing or two. Like how sometimes, even if someone's a bit... intense," he paused, searching for the right word.
"...like our new alpha seems to be, you gotta pick your battles."
"Look," he said, putting a hand on my shoulder.
"I'm not saying Isabelle's right. Maybe she's just one of those alphas like father sometimes, who thinks being loud and bossy is the only way to lead. But you gotta be patient, bro.”
“Figure out a way to work with her, at least until you can come up with a better plan, alright?"
I slumped back in my chair, the fight slowly draining out of me.
Derek was right, as annoying as it was. Isabelle held all the cards right now, and pushing her wouldn't help Catrina or the baby. For now, I had to play it smart.
Even though I really, really wanted to fight back against Isabelle, I knew it would only make things worse for Catrina and the baby. Ugh.
Taking a deep breath, I finally looked at Derek and gave him a small nod.
"Fine," I grumbled, my jaw clenched so tight it hurt.
"For now, I'll do what she wants. But listen up, bro, this isn't over. Catrina and the baby are part of this pack, and they deserve better than being treated like nobody."
Derek seemed a lot lighter all of a sudden. He put a hand on my shoulder and squeezed.
"That's the Rowan I know," he said in a low voice.
A flicker of hope sparked in my chest. Maybe, just maybe, things wouldn't be so bad.
"Speaking of figuring things out," I started cautiously,
"Wouldn't it be great if you were my beta? We could be an unstoppable team, you and me. We could fix everything that's wrong with this pack, starting with Isabelle."
Derek's smile faded. "I know it would be tempting, little bro," he said, ruffling my hair playfully.
"But things are a little more complicated now with the two packs merging."
"Complicated how?" I frowned.
Derek sighed.
"Isabelle seems like the type who wants to be in charge of everything. You saw how she treated you. And let's face it, the Mondragon pack is way bigger and stronger than the Magnus pack. We kind of need them more than they need us, you know?"
I crossed my arms and glared. "So what? We're just supposed to roll over and let them walk all over us?"
"Hold on," Derek said, putting a calming hand on my shoulder.
"I get you're mad, but being the alpha means thinking a few steps ahead. We'll figure out a way to deal with this 'Queen Bee' as you called her, but we gotta do it smart. No one gets hurt, okay?"
I couldn't even answer. I was too mad and upset to speak. But I did understand what I had to do.
For now, I had to swallow my pride and do what Isabelle wanted, even though it felt awful. I had to play along with her mean rules, at least until Catrina and the baby were safe.
But this wasn't forever. Not a chance. In my head, I promised myself that this was just a waiting game. A time to get stronger and find someone to help us.
One way or another, I would get Catrina and the baby out of this mess. Isabelle wouldn't control us forever. Catrina deserved so much better, and I would make sure she got it.
And if Isabelle kept messing with me and my family, if she kept trying to ruin everything, well...let's just say she wouldn't be the only one feeling threatened.
