The next morning, I crawled out of the tiny, dark room I lived in. I'd somehow survived yesterday's awful meeting with Rowan and his pretty fiancée. But it wasn't fun.
My chest still hurt. I realized Rowan didn't care about me and was about to get married. I was just someone he used, even though I was having his baby. His real heir will be the child of that fancy she-wolf.
I pushed those thoughts away and went upstairs to work. The hotel lobby was fancy, but my maid uniform made me feel like I didn't belong. Everywhere I looked, things showed wealth.
As I walked by the front desk, I heard two other workers whispering.
Two other workers whispered near the front desk. "Did you hear? Big engagement party last night for the Magnus and Mondragon packs!"
My ears perked up. Magnus was Rowan's pack. Who were these Mondragons?
The other woman nodded fast. "Rowan looked super hot, they say. But his fiancée, Isabelle Mondragon, is a real looker too."
Isabelle Mondragon. So that was her name, Rowan's future wife. the same woman I saw with him yesterday.
Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, "Wait, the hotel owners are werewolves?"
The workers stared like I had three heads, then started giggling. I didn't know humans here knew about their bosses' secrets! Feeling silly, I mumbled an excuse and hurried to the service elevators. Work called, pack drama or not.
A few hours later, I was on the floor, scrubbing another fancy bathroom. My back screamed in pain, thanks to my growing belly.
I reached for a far corner, but it was too tight. As I groaned and tried to squeeze in, a deep voice startled me.
"Need a hand?"
I turned and saw a tall, fancy man with graying dark hair and sharp gold eyes. A small smile played on his handsome face as he offered a hand.
I took it and stood up, catching my breath. This alpha looked exactly like Rowan, with the same strong jaw, high cheekbones, and perfect looks.
It hit me like a ton of bricks - this had to be Rowan's dad, the owner of the hotel and the current leader of the Magnus pack.
"Th-thank you," I mumbled, looking down. Why was the boss here cleaning?
He chuckled. "No problem, just helping out."
He cleaned the spot I struggled with in two quick swipes. My cheeks burned with shame – the CEO saw me struggle!
He stood tall, looking at my belly with approval. "How far along are you, dear? Quite the baby bump!"
My heart hammered. Did he know? About me and Rowan? In a panic, I hid my belly with my hands. "F-five months, sir."
"Five months?" he repeated, his eyes sparkling. "Well, then I'm excited to meet my grandson! Alpha heirs are a big deal."
His kind words and smile should've calmed me. Instead, fear crept in. He thought I was carrying an heir for the pack?
A shiver ran down my spine as his big hand landed on my shoulder, friendly-like. I wasn't safe being anonymous anymore.
I swallowed hard, "Th-thank you, sir. I gotta go..."
"Father," Rowan's voice boomed, scary loud. "Don't touch my mate. Now."
The alpha boss turned to his son, surprised.
"Your mate? Did you claim her?" he said sarcastically.
Rowan marched over, pushing between us.
He breathed hard, his chest puffed up, and his nostrils flared. It was scary seeing him so wild, eyes burning like fire. Even though he'd been mean to me before this doesn’t compete at all.
"Don't touch what's mine," Rowan growled, not looking away from his dad.
"No one gets near her. Not you, not anyone."
Rowan's dad raised an eyebrow. "Calm down, Rowan. No need to yell. This is all just a bit...unexpected."
He looked at me for a second, trying to figure things out.
Please, I thought silently. Don't hurt me or my baby.
Finally, the pack leader shrugged. "Well, remember your promise with the Mondragon Pack… I hope you resolve this mess soon"
He walked out, closing the door softly. His last words echoed in the room.
Rowan turned on me, grabbing my shoulders tight. "Happy now, omega? You made yourself a big target by coming here."
My anger exploded. "What? You're kidding, right? You're the one who freaked out and told your dad I'm your...your mate! That was you, not me!"
I shoved him back with all my might, even though he barely moved. He looked surprised for a second, then frowned again.
"I had to! He could smell you and knew something was up. The only way to get him to leave you alone was to say you're mine."
He held my arms tight, not hurting me but making me feel trapped.
"You don't know how in danger you are now, omega. You have no idea."
"Yeah? Well, why do you always blame me? it wasn't you who lured me that night with your scent?"
Rowan flinched at my outburst. "I know, Catrina," he mumbled.
"but it wasn't me, it was my wolf. The one who acted."
I scoffed. "You think I'm dumb? I may not be a high-class she-wolf like your beautiful fiancée, but my parents taught me right. You're the exact type of wolf who gaslights everyone around them, then tries to blame it on some other creature inside you!"
Rowan sighed. "Calm down... are you jealous perhaps?"
My jaw clenched. "What the hell are you talking about? Jealous? You barely even acknowledged me before this whole mess! The only thing I'm jealous of is the freedom you have just to walk away from all this."
My voice broke. "Now I'm treated like a criminal, all your fault," I whispered, trying not to cry.
"You called me your mate, but is it even true?" A sob escaped my lips.
"Don't you know how much it hurts when your mate rejects you? It feels like half of you gets ripped away..."
Before I finished, Rowan surprised me. He wrapped his strong arms around me in a hug, warm against my shaking body.
Then, something even crazier happened. He cupped my face gently and kissed me. It wasn't a rough kiss, but a soft one, sweet and full of promise.
