Rowan POV:
I stopped in the hallway, frustration churning inside me.
"What am I doing?" I muttered to myself. "She deserves so much better than this."
Leaving felt like ripping my own heart out. I owed her safety, security, especially with the Kezrach Larva possibly affecting me too.
But the thought of being away from my mate, my everything, was agony.
Every instinct screamed to go back, beg forgiveness, promise to fix everything.
But I couldn't. Not with so many threats circling, waiting for me to slip up.
I had to be strong, for both of us.
Another heavy sigh escaped me as I trudged down the hallway.
I stopped for a quick chat with Beta Carson, my voice strained. "Carson, I need to head out for a while."
Carson's brow furrowed with concern.
"Is everything alright, Alpha Rowan? You seem troubled."
"There are some things about my family history I need to sort out," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper.
This whole mystery was tearing our pack apart, and the responsibility weighed heavily on me. But I couldn't tell him everything.
Carson's eyes held a unsure glint.
"Alpha, you know I am at your service. Is there anything I can do to assist you? Perhaps some research in the pack archives?"
I shook my head, forcing a small smile. "I appreciate that, Carson, but this is something I have to do myself. However," I continued, my voice firming.
"I do need a favor. While I'm gone, please keep a close eye on Catrina and Isabelle. This whole situation has them on edge, and I don't want them to worry when they realize I'm gone."
"Of course, Alpha," Carson replied, his voice understanding.
"Their safety is paramount. However," he hesitated, his voice dropping to a respectful murmur.
"Might your absence cause some unrest? There are those who might see an opportunity."
I straightened my shoulders, projecting confidence. "I understand the risks, Carson. But I have faith in Isabelle’s leadership. We've faced challenges before, and we will again. Just keep things running smoothly until I return."
Carson nodded solemnly. "May the Goddess grant you safety on your journey, Alpha Rowan."
I gave him a curt nod and a grateful smile.
We might not be close to each other, but his help meant the world. Slipping into the cool night, I breathed deeply, letting my wolf rise.
The change happened super fast, like flipping a switch.
I loved the feeling – all powerful and free, like a whole new me.
Without wasting any time, I bolted, racing like crazy through the thick forest around the Mondragon estate.
The world blurred as my paws pounded the earth. I pushed myself harder, needing distance.
I couldn't bear the memory of Catrina's heartbroken face, or the disappointment I'd see in Isabelle's eyes.
As I ran, my thoughts were a mess. Fear gnawed at me, but determination burned even brighter.
I had to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
The forest opened up to a mountain pass I recognized. I slowed down, taking deep breaths.
A wave of longing washed over me. Turning back, returning to the Mondragon pack, would be so easy. But I couldn't.
Not while my entire identity felt like a lie. I had to know the truth, even if it burned everything down.
The crisp mountain air filled my lungs as I pushed forward, my paws finding a rhythm on the rocky ground.
My destination was a question mark, but a sense of urgency thrummed inside me. Catrina's parents, Henri and Maggie, held the answers.
Their faces flashed in my mind, haunted and desperate. I remembered their words, laced with suspicion:
"Alpha Marcus... he stole the power. Not rightfully his." Back then, I'd scoffed.
My father, Isn't Magnus himself? Just thinking about it was Impossible.
But with every new twist in this whole mess, their words came back to haunt me, their truth a bitter pill I couldn't swallow.
I reached a moonlit clearing, the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth filling my nose. They had to have some answers, some clue to what Marcus was claiming.
The further I traveled, the more unsettling the forest became. Shadows seemed to stretch, the trees twisted and menacing.
I shoved down the unease, focusing on my path. I couldn't afford distractions.
But my senses felt off. Phantom noises echoed around me, shadows seemed to writhe. I growled, hair bristling, searching for danger.
A flicker of movement made me whirl around, fangs bared. Nothing. The forest was silent except for rustling leaves.
My heart pounded as I pressed on, every nerve on high alert.
The forest was playing tricks on me. Shadows stretched into monstrous shapes, the trees seemed to close in. And the sounds…
"Get a grip, Rowan," I muttered, fighting the fog.
But the voices only grew stronger. My father's booming voice, laced with a cruel edge, cut through the night.
"Look at you, running scared like a pup with his tail between his legs. Just like you always have been, a fraud on the throne!"
Then Catrina's choked sobs, filled with terror. "Rowan, please come back! They're going to hurt us!"
Isabelle's usually strong voice trembled with fear. "Rowan, don't leave us! We need you!"
The noise was overwhelming, twisting my thoughts, blurring the line between reality and my deepest fears.
A flicker of movement to my side sent a jolt of panic through me. I spun around, snarling, fangs bared.
"Who's there?" I roared, desperation clawing at my throat. But the space between the trees was empty.
"Foolish pup," a voice hissed, seeming to come from everywhere at once. "You can't escape the truth. Your whole life is built on a lie!"
"Stop it!" I roared, desperate. "Leave me alone!"
The voices only intensified, feeding off my fear.
My father's mocking laughter, the terrified pleas of my mate – they run in my head, pushing me to the edge of craziness.
My legs gave way, my vision graying at the edges. The forest floor rushed up, consciousness fading.
I stumbled, my vision going fuzzy, and then the world dissolved into blackness as I blacked out, my body hitting the forest floor.
But in that last flicker of consciousness, I saw someone standing over me, concern etched on their face.
"Hang on," they murmured. "I've got you."
And then, everything went dark.
