Finally, he shook himself out of it, like waking from a bad dream. "Catrina, I..."
His voice cracked. Shame and regret filled his eyes.
"I don't know what I was thinking," Rowan said.
"The pregnancy hormones, our broken bond...it must be affecting me too. Driving me to act like this"
I stared at him in disbelief. "Are you kidding me? You were the one who broke our bond! How can the pregnancy hormones possibly affect you?"
Rowan flinched at my words but didn't argue. He knew I was right. He was the one who cruelly rejected me after marking me as his mate.
Disgusted, I shook my head. "Forget it. Don't even try to answer that. You're just another alpha who only cares about being in charge."
I shoved my finger at his chest, furious. "You almost hit me, the woman carrying your child! What kind of alpha, what kind of man are you?"
Rowan looked stunned. "You're right, Catrina… I don't deserve to be a part of the baby's life. Not after what I've done." His voice was rough and shaky.
I scoffed. "Took you long enough, Mr. Alpha. But guess what? It's too late for me."
Tears welled up, but I blinked them back hard.
"Rowan Magnus, I never want to talk with you again. Do you understand?" I stared him down, daring him to fight for us.
He just nodded sadly and left without another word. The door shut with a click, and I collapsed onto the floor in tears. Part of me wished he'd argued, and fought for us and the baby.
But deep down, I knew he'd never choose us over his pack.
The next day, I dragged myself to work, feeling miserable. I tried to forget Rowan and everything that happened, but it wasn't easy.
At lunch, the grumpy manager barked at me to come to the desk.
He didn't even look up when he said, "Special job for you this week, Catrina. Big wedding for the Magnus heir. You're on setup crew."
My stomach lurched. The last thing I wanted was anything to do with Rowan's wedding. But arguing with the boss wasn't an option.
"Sure, sir," I mumbled, feeling awful.
The next few days were a blur. The hotel became a giant wedding wonderland, and I was stuck in the middle of it all.
My emotions were already a mess, and seeing all the fancy decorations, giant cakes, and endless wedding stuff just made it worse.
Everywhere I looked, there was a reminder of Rowan's new life.
In the afternoon, I wrestled with a giant flower centerpiece in the ballroom.
My pregnant belly made it hard to balance, and I grunted as I tried to position a vase.
"Need help, maid?" A fake-sweet voice said behind me.
I turned to see Isabelle, all smiles and perfect features, walking towards me.
"I'm good, thanks," I mumbled, avoiding eye contact.
Chatting with Rowan's fiancee was the last thing I needed.
But Isabelle was already there, shoving me aside with her fancy nails.
"Nonsense, you're way too pregnant for this! Let me."
Her condescending tone made me want to snap, but I just watched as she effortlessly fixed the flowers in a few smooth moves.
When she finished, she dusted off her hands and gave me a disgustingly sweet smile.
"There, that's much better. Can't have the wedding looking anything less than perfect."
"...You know, I simply can't have a whore like you hanging around causing problems for me and my new husband," she said airly.
I started to argue, but she cut me off with a perfect nail held up.
"Don't get upset, honey. I'm just stating the facts. You tried to steal Rowan and got pregnant, how sad. But don't worry, his heart will belong to me after we're married. Those girly tricks of yours won't work on him forever."
My wolf spirit raged at her disrespect, but I forced out, "I'm just doing my job, not causing trouble."
"Good girl," Isabelle purred.
"Because make no mistake - if you try to go sniffing around my husband again, I'll make sure your bastard pup gets exactly what mutts like it deserve. Nothing."
She looked me up and down like I was something disgusting.
"Actually," she said, a cruel smile on her face.
"I don't totally agree with how some people like my father-in-law, treat omegas like you. I'm the leader of my pack, you see, and I believe in fairness."
Leaning in way too close, her perfume stinging my nose, she whispered, "You and your baby don't have to suffer like that."
"But let me tell you something, omegas are good at cooking and cleaning, not much else. Don't get any ideas just because you hooked up with a drunk alpha."
She cackled a cold laugh. "Oh yeah, honey, I know all about that. What you two had was a big mistake. Just a dumb omega chasing after an alpha who'd never look at her twice."
Isabelle's words burned. How could she call my baby a mutt? Fury exploded in my chest.
Before I could yell back, Isabelle smiled sweetly and stepped away. "Well, have fun playing pretend wifey while it lasts. Once I'm officially Rowan's mate, you and your baby are going straight to the bottom of the pack."
I opened my mouth to fight back, but footsteps cut me off. Rowan was there, frowning as he looked between us.
"Isabelle," Rowan said sharply. "What's happening here?"
Isabelle spun around, all sunshine and fake innocence. "Oh, just helping Catrina with the flowers, honey. You know how clumsy she is being pregnant and all."
Rowan glanced at me, a flicker of worry crossing his face for a second. Then it vanished, replaced by a blank mask.
"Right," he mumbled, looking around the room. "Everything seems...great."
Isabelle practically glowed, grabbing his arm. "Absolutely perfect, darling. Just the way I wanted it."
They chatted wedding stuff, their voices a distant hum. I stood there, feeling invisible.
Did Rowan even hear Isabelle's threats? Did he care?
Ugh, I told Rowan not to talk to me anymore. He may have agreed with his fiancee's insults about our baby.
What kind of life would we even have if I became his concubine, with her constantly harassing us? Did he really think she'd ever leave us in peace?
Dejected, I turned back to work. But then a loud bang echoed from the hallway. The other maids rushed to see what happened. I put my hand on my chest, heart pounding.
"Someone's fighting out there!" someone yelled.
