Rowan’s POV:
The next few days were a blur. I tried to focus on my classes and all the stuff happening on campus, but it was hard.
My mind kept replaying that conversation with Brock.
The way he’d mocked Catrina, my mate, and our unborn pup… It made my blood boil.
“I should have ripped his throat out.” My wolf snarled, pacing inside me.
“No one talks about our mate like that.”
I’d barely managed to control myself.
My claws itched to come out, and for a second, I thought I was going to shift right there in front of everyone.
That would’ve been a disaster. Just the thought sent a shiver down my spine.
The Drakor Clan had sent me here to spy on rival packs, not to start a war with a bunch of humans.
And here I was, letting some jerk get under my skin and almost ruining everything.
“I need to calm down.” I told myself, taking a deep breath.
“I can’t let my emotions control me. I have to be smarter than that.”
I walked through the hallways, my mind racing. Then, it hit me.
What if I could use Brock’s obsession with Catrina to my advantage? What if I could convince him I wasn't in contact with her anymore? Maybe he’d leave me alone.
It’s worth a shot. I thought, a small, humorless smile tugging at my lips.
It was risky, but it might work.
I had to find Brock, talk to him, and try to smooth things over. It was the only way to keep Catrina safe.
I finally found Brock sitting on a bench, looking at his phone.
I took a deep breath and walked towards him, putting on a sorry face.
“Brock,” I said quietly. “Can we talk?”
He looked up, his eyes narrowed. “What do you want, Rowan?”
I held up my hands, showing him I wasn’t looking for a fight.
“Look, I… I know things got a little crazy before. I just want to apologize.”
He frowned, studying my face. “What are you up to, Rowan?”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
“Nothing, Brock. I just… I need you to understand that Catrina and I, we’re not… we’re not together.”
His eyes widened a little, and I could see the confusion on his face. “But I thought… I mean, that hotel she worked at, that’s your family’s, and now she’s…”
I shook my head, cutting him off. “It’s not like that. Catrina and I are just friends. That’s all.”
Lie. Lie. Lie. It felt wrong, saying those words, like I was betraying the most important bond in my life.
But I had to do it, for her safety.
Brock stared at me for a long time, then he laughed and shook his head.
“You know, I never thought you were the hero type, Rowan. But I guess you still have feelings for her, even though she got pregnant by another dude.”
I wanted to correct him, to tell him the truth, but I just shrugged, trying to look embarrassed.
“Yeah, well, what can I say? I care about her, you know?”
“I more than care about her, idiot. She’s my mate. The other half of my soul. But you don’t need to know that.” My wolf snarled silently.
Brock nodded, relaxing a bit. “I get it. She’s special, that’s for sure.”
I chuckled, agreeing with him. “Yeah, she is. And that’s why I’m not going to mess with you two. Catrina’s moved on, and so have I.”
He looked at me, not sure if he believed me. “Really, Rowan? After the way you get mad just because I talked about her?”
I shrugged, trying to seem casual. “I got caught up in the moment, I guess. But it’s over. Catrina’s gone, and I’m moving on.”
Brock studied me for a moment, his expression hard to read. Finally, he sighed and shook his head.
“Well, I’ll be damned. I never thought I’d see the day Rowan Magnus gave up on a girl.”
I felt guilty, but I pushed it down, smiling a little.
“Yeah, well, things change. I just want to… forget about it.”
Brock nodded, like he understood. “Yeah, I hear you. It’s tough seeing the girl you love pregnant by someone else.”
His words hit me hard, but I forced myself to nod.
“It is, but… I’m trying to accept it. As long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters.”
He stared at me, then a smile slowly spread across his face.
“You know, Rowan, I gotta hand it to you. You’re a better guy than I thought.”
I blinked, surprised. “What do you mean?”
Brock chuckled.
“I mean, most guys would have tried to fight me for her. But you… you’re letting her go, for her sake.”
Relief flooded me. My plan was working!
“Yeah, well, like I said, I just want Catrina to be happy.”
“Even though it’s killing me to be away from her.” My wolf whined, but I silenced him.
Brock nodded, his expression softening. “Well, then, I guess we can forget about all this. Just as long as you stay away, you know?”
I nodded, trying to look sincere. “Absolutely, Brock. I won’t cause any more trouble, I promise.”
He looked at me, then held out his hand. “Alright. Truce?”
I shook his hand. “Truce.”
He grinned, then turned and walked away. I stood there for a minute, feeling relieved and worried at the same time.
I couldn’t believe it had worked! Brock actually believed me.
But I felt bad, like I was betraying Catrina by pretending to give up on her.
It’s for the best, for now. I reminded myself, pushing down the guilt.
I’ll make it up to her later. Right now, I need to focus on the mission.
I had to find a way to contact the Drakor Clan, to learn more about this curse that was hurting my pack.
I looked up at the sky, silently praying to the Moon Goddess.
“Please, keep Catrina and our pup safe,” I whispered. “I’ll do whatever it takes, I swear.”
With a determined nod, I headed back to my dorm, already thinking about my next move.
This is just the beginning. I thought, my wolf growling softly in agreement. We’ll stop this curse.
We’ll save our pack. And we’ll be together again, as a family.
