Derek’s POV:
My heart pounded like a drum as I stood in front of the Magnus pack house.
After talking with Dad – if you could even call it that, more like shouting at a raging beast – I knew there was no turning back.
It was time to stand up for what was right, to fight for our pack’s future.
“I never thought I’d be doing this… going against my own father.”
My wolf whined, sensing my unease.
“But he’s not himself anymore. The Kezrach has twisted him, made him into something… dark.”
The memory of Dad’s crazed eyes, the snarling threats that spilled from his lips, sent a shiver down my spine.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the doors open and walked inside. The air was thick with tension.
Everyone was looking at me, whispering amongst themselves.
“Derek,” Uncle Jarrett’s voice boomed, and I turned to see him striding towards me, his face serious.
“You’re back.”
I nodded, squaring my shoulders, trying to project an air of confidence, even though my insides felt like jelly.
“I am, Uncle. I’m ready to do what needs to be done.”
He studied me for a moment, then a small smile touched his lips.
“Good. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but I’m glad you’re on our side.”
Looking around, I could feel the unease radiating off the pack members.
“They’re… not happy, are they?”
He sighed, running a hand through his greying hair. “No, they’re not. Marcus’s actions have… well, they’ve shaken their faith in him. They want answers. And it’s up to us to give them those answers.”
His words fueled my determination.
“Then let’s do it. Let’s tell them the truth, even if it’s hard to hear.”
Jarrett nodded, his expression grim.
“Be prepared, Derek. Some of them might not want to listen. We’re asking them to question everything they’ve ever been told, everything they thought they knew.”
I swallowed hard, but my resolve didn’t waver.
“I have to do this.” I told myself.
“I’m ready, Uncle Jarrett. Let’s do this.”
He led me towards the main hall, where everyone was gathered. As we walked in, the whispers died down, and hundreds of eyes turned to us.
“Pack members,” Jarrett called out, his voice commanding attention. “We need to talk. It’s important.”
I stepped forward, my heart pounding like a wild thing in my chest.
But my voice was steady as I spoke. “As you all know, our Alpha, Marcus Magnus, has been… unwell. But the truth is, his illness is more than just a physical sickness. It’s a curse… a darkness that’s been affecting our pack for generations.”
Gasps and murmurs erupted, and I saw disbelief on their faces. This wasn’t going to be easy.
“A curse?” Silas, one of the elders, growled.
“What kind of nonsense is this?”
I raised my hand. “I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. The Kezrach Larva, the illness that’s been affecting our Alpha… it’s not just something in his body. It’s a reflection of the darkness and prejudice that’s been in our pack for years.”
They looked at each other, their faces uncertain.
“If that’s true,” Silas said, his eyes narrowed.
“Then why haven’t we heard about this before?”
I took a deep breath, preparing myself for what I had to say next. This was the hardest part, the part that could shatter our pack.
“Because Marcus, our Alpha, has been hiding it from us. He’s been using the Kezrach Larva, and the fear it creates, to control the pack.”
The hall erupted into chaos, shouts of anger and disbelief mixing with confused murmurs.
I held up my hands again, trying to regain control.
“Please, you have to understand,” I pleaded, my voice rising above the din.
“Marcus has been lying to us, manipulating us with his fear and his obsession with ‘purity’ and ‘strength.’ The truth is, he’s been the one feeding the curse, not trying to break it.”
They stared at me, their expressions a mixture of anger, confusion, and disbelief.
“Then what are we supposed to do?” a young she-wolf with fiery eyes demanded.
“If Marcus is the cause of this curse, how do we stop it?”
“My brother, Rowan… he’s found a way,” I said, my voice firm.
“He’s with the Drakhor Clan, learning their secrets. They have the knowledge to break the curse, to heal our Alpha… to heal our pack.”
That got their attention. The whispers died down, replaced by a tense silence.
“The Drakhor?” Silas’s voice was skeptical.
“Those reclusive mystics? What makes you think they’ll help us?”
“Rowan’s mate… she’s part of the Mondragon pack now,” I explained, choosing my words carefully.
“They’re working together, trying to find a way to break the curse. But they can’t do it alone. They need our help.”
“Why should we trust you?” a gruff voice growled from the back of the hall.
“You’re Marcus’s son, just like Rowan. You’re probably in on this whole scheme!”
Pain lanced through me. They were right to be suspicious.
I’d been part of the problem for so long, blind to my father’s manipulation, caught up in my own selfish desires.
But I’d changed.
I couldn’t stand by and let my father destroy everything.
I have to make them believe me. I thought, my wolf pacing restlessly within me.
I have to show them that I’m not like him, that I’m on their side.
“You’re right,” I said, meeting their gazes one by one, my voice sincere.
“I haven’t always been the best. But I’m trying to make things right. I’m asking you to trust me, to trust Rowan. We’re not our father. We want what’s best for the pack, not just for ourselves.”
Silence hung heavy in the air. I could feel their eyes on me, searching for any sign of deception.
But I held their gazes, my heart pounding, my resolve unwavering.
“I know this is a lot to ask,” I continued, my voice softer now.
“But please… give us a chance. Let us prove that we’re fighting for you, for the future of our pack.”
“Together, we can break this curse, heal the wounds of the past, and build a better future for the Magnus pack. A future where all of you are respected, where love and loyalty are valued above all else.”
As I spoke, I saw a flicker of hope in their eyes, a spark of something that might just be belief. It wasn't much, but it was a start.
“Please,” I begged silently. “Believe me.”
The hall was silent, every eye fixed on me, waiting for me to speak.
This is it. The point of no return. I either convince them, or our pack is finished.
“We have to stand up to my father. We have to challenge him, show him that the pack won’t follow him down this dark path anymore. We have to bring back the strength and honor of the Magnus pack!”
My voice echoed through the hall, and silence hung heavy in the air.
“And what if Marcus won’t step down?” Silas asked, his bushy eyebrows drawn together in worry.
I straightened my shoulders, meeting his gaze with unwavering determination.
“Then we have to remove him. By force, if we have to. Our pack’s survival, our future… it depends on it.”
I held my ground, searching the crowd for any sign of support. This was it, the moment of truth.
And then, a voice rang out, clear and strong, cutting through the doubt and fear like a beacon in the darkness.
“I’m with you, Derek.”
It was the she-wolf with the fiery eyes, stepping forward with a defiant glint in her gaze.
Relief flooded through me, washing away some of the fear that had been constricting my chest.
I wasn’t alone.
“If what you’re saying is true,” she continued.
“Then we can’t let Marcus lead us any longer. We can’t let him drag us down with him.”
“Yes! Someone who understands.” My wolf howled in triumph.
Her courage was contagious. One by one, other pack members stepped forward, their faces a mixture of determination and apprehension.
A burly male wolf with scars criss crossing his muzzle stepped forward, his voice a low growl.
“We’ve followed Marcus for too long,” he declared.
“And look where it’s gotten us. Weak. Divided. Sick. It’s time for a change.”
A chorus of agreement rose from the pack, and a wave of pride and relief washed over me.
“Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.
“I know this is a hard choice, but together, we can break this curse and rebuild our pack, stronger than ever before.”
They nodded, their faces hardened with resolve.
I glanced at Uncle Jarrett, and his eyes reflected the same pride and determination I felt.
We were a team now, united in our purpose.
“Alright, then,” Jarrett announced, his voice booming with authority.
“Let’s get to work. We’ve got a lot to do if we’re going to take down Marcus and this Kezrach Larva for good.”
The pack surged into action, a flurry of movement and hushed conversations.
The air buzzed with energy, a sense of purpose that had been absent for far too long.
I watched as they gathered in small groups, whispering plans, their eyes gleaming with newfound hope.
As I stood there, watching them, a wave of pride washed over me.
This was my pack, my family, and I was ready to fight for them, tooth and claw, until my last breath.
“Rowan,” I murmured, sending a silent prayer to my brother, wherever he might be.
“Hang in there. We’re coming for you. We’re going to make things right.”
With that, I joined the pack, our voices blending together as we strategized, our hearts beating as one.
The road ahead would be tough, full of dangers. But with the pack united, we could overcome anything.
