Catrina’s POV
A steady, rhythmic beeping filled my ears, pulling me up from the darkness.
It took a moment to realize it was a heart monitor. My heart.
I was alive.
As if to punctuate that realization, a high-pitched cry, full of life, split the silence.
Suddenly, everything came rushing back – the fear, the pain, the warmth of his arms around me…
My eyes flew open, my eyes drawn instinctively to the source of the sound.
A team of nurses bustled around a bassinet near the window, their faces obscured by surgical masks. But I wasn’t interested in them.
My eyes were locked on the man standing beside them, his back to me, his shoulders tense with a mixture of awe and fear.
The same man that rescued me.
He turned then, as if sensing my eyes, and the expression on his face… It was like the sun breaking through storm clouds.
Relief, so profound it brought tears to his eyes, joy that lit up his entire being, and a love so intense it stole my breath away.
“It’s time, Mr. Magnus,” one of the nurses chirped, her voice muffled by her mask.
“Your son is ready to meet his father.”
Son.
My breath hitched in my chest, my hand instinctively going to the flatness of my belly, no longer a haven for our pup but… but our son was here.
Rowan didn’t even seem to hear the nurse. His eyes were fixed on me, his eyes shining with unshed tears as he slowly approached the bed.
“It’s a boy,” the nurse announced, as if we didn't both already know, feel it in the deepest parts of our souls.
“A healthy, strong baby boy.”
His hand closed over mine, his grip tight, reassuring.
I could feel the tremor in his fingers, the echo of his own fear and relief.
“A son,” he breathed, his voice choking with emotion. “Catrina, we have a son.”
Tears welled up in my own eyes, blurring my vision.
“Our little boy,” I whispered, my heart overflowing with a love I’d never even imagined possible.
The nurse carefully placed the tiny bundle into Rowan’s waiting arms, and the sight of my mate, my Alpha, holding our child… It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.
All the fear, the uncertainty of the past few weeks, faded away as I watched Rowan rock our son gently.
He was a natural, his large hands surprisingly gentle as he traced a finger along the baby’s delicate cheek.
“Hello, little one,” Rowan cooed, his voice thick with awe. “I’m your dad. And I’m so happy you’re here.”
A single tear escaped, tracing a path down his cheek, and I ached to reach out, to soothe away the memory of the fear that had gripped us both.
“He’s perfect,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
My wolf, usually content to slumber beneath the surface, stirred, sending a wave of fierce protectiveness through me.
This was our pup.
Ours to love, ours to protect, no matter what.
Rowan’s eyes met mine, and the love reflected in those emerald depths… it stole my breath away.
“Lucas,” he said, the name a soft rumble against the baby’s skin. “Our son. Our Lucas.”
He leaned down, pressing a kiss to the baby’s forehead, so light, so tender, it brought fresh tears to my eyes.
“Catrina,” he said, turning back to me, his expression filled with a wonder that mirrored my own.
“I… Thank you. For giving me this. For giving me a family.”
My heart swelled, warmth blooming in my chest like a wildflower pushing through the earth after a long winter.
This.
This was everything I’d ever wanted, even though I’d been too afraid to admit it, even to myself.
“It’s everything I ever wanted, Rowan,”
I whispered, reaching out to cup his cheek, my fingers tracing the familiar lines of his face.
“You. Me. Lucas. This is us. This is our destiny.”
The words seemed to echo in the air, vibrating with a power that went beyond mere sound. And as I spoke to them, a strange sensation washed over me.
A jolt, a shift, like the world was snapping back into focus after being blurry for far too long.
Memories, vivid and startling, flashed through my mind. When we bathed in moonlight. Rowan’s touch, his scent, the overwhelming sense of rightness as we…
Oh.
Oh.
I remembered.
“Rowan,” I breathed, my voice barely a whisper.
His head snapped up, his eyes widening as they met mine. “Catrina? You’re… you’re awake.”
It wasn’t a question. He’d felt it too, the shift, the reconnection.
“He’s beautiful,” I said, my voice stronger now, the fog in my mind clearing. “Our Lucas.”
Relief washed over his features, chasing away the last vestiges of fear.
“He is, isn’t he?” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
“I was so worried… about you, about him… But you’re both alright. And now…” He trailed off, unable to articulate the depth of what he was feeling.
I knew. I felt it too. The relief, the overwhelming love, the fierce protectiveness that came with finally having this tiny, precious life in our arms.
Our pup.
Reaching out, I brushed my fingers against Lucas’s soft cheek, marveling at the perfection of his tiny features.
“He’s perfect, Rowan. Just like his father.”
A chuckle rumbled in his chest, the sound music to my ears.
“No, my love,” he said, his eyes shining with a love that mirrored my own. “He’s perfect. Just like his mother.”
Tears welled up again, but this time, they were tears of joy. Of gratitude.
Of knowing, with every fiber of my being, that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
“Our family,” I whispered, my eyes moving from Rowan to our son, my heart overflowing with love.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against my forehead in a kiss that spoke of promises and forever.
“Yes, Catrina,” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. “Our family. And we’ll get through this. Together.”
And as I looked into his eyes, I knew he was right. We’d faced down a power-hungry Alpha, the society views in omegas, and a curse that had haunted our families for generations.
We could face anything, as long as we had each other.
We were mates.
We were parents.
We were a pack.
And nothing, not even the darkness that still lurked at the edges of our lives, could break the bond that held us together.
