We were in the car, speeding back to the Obsidian Pack, and Noah was on the phone with his father, promising to be home soon. He acted calm and confident, but I felt the nervousness come out of him in waves. Logan turned the corners like a car thief and sped through the towns we passed
Once Noah hung up, he turned his head and glared at his brother. If looks could kill…Logan would be six feet under, and he knew it. That’s why he never once looked at Noah. He kept his eyes on the road, but the back of his neck was beet red, and he gulped every three seconds.
“Not that this relates to the situation, but how did you know where we were?” I was wearing my outfit from before, and it clung to my sweaty body like a nuisance.
Logan’s eyes flickered over Noah’s face for a second before he turned them back on the road.
“Logan mind linked me the second you walked out of the house.” at least he’s not a liar.
Of course, his brother would tell on us. I thought Logan was the fun one, but it was dumb of me to think he would leave after the situation at the bar, without letting his brother know. he should’ve just let me go on my own.
“What’s the situation?” I asked and crossed my arms. There was too much anger and agitation in this car for it to be some measly fight or pack business. This was bigger, especially since even Noah was on edge about it.
And considering Logan's speed down the street, I’m guessing it’s far bigger than just my father being back.
Ugh, he’s still there. Maybe I should deal with him.
Or hopefully, someone will have kicked him out on his ass by now and he’s on his way back to whatever hole they dug him out of.
Hell, if luck is on my side, he’ll decide on his own that he didn’t want to stay: he did it once, hopefully, he’s done it again and left the pack on his own.
We were nearing the pack, and Noah pressed his head back against the headrest, clenching his phone in his hand like it was a stress ball.
“It’s Volokov.” My spine twisted and my legs went numb. “He’s here.”
Logan slowed down when he drove in on the street leading up to our pack, and the second we crossed the border and drove through town we could tell that everyone knew what was going on. People were hurrying home, whispering and gossiping as they leaned in to tell the news. The stores were closing, and the windows were shut. All he did was come to our pack, which shows the power of his presence; he spreads fear like no other. No werewolf was as nutritious as the Russians, we didn’t
make business with them and we sure as fuck didn’t piss them off. Nobody was that suicidal. Well, nobody except for Logan Reed.
We stopped outside the mansion and the doors stood wide open, waiting for us. Waiting for Noah.
Once we got out and I was heading inside, I was jerked back and slammed against Noah’s chest. His fingers tightened around my arm, and he stared into my eyes, past my shields and into my soul in a warning.
“You go to your room and keep your ass put. Got it?”
There was a snarky comment about to slip out, but this was the first time I saw Noah nervous, and I also wanted nothing to do with Volokov, so I decided to just shut my mouth and listen.
“Got it.” I tried to pull my arm free, thinking he was done but he tightened his hold and kept me put.
“I said I got it.” I said and tried jerking my arm free again, but the bastard wouldn’t let go. He held me, roughly, but when I looked into his eyes and searched his face, I realized that it wasn’t to warn me. I looked around to make sure nobody was watching and then I cupped his cheek, gently rubbing circles across his jaw and made sure he heard me.
“It’ll be fine. He probably just wants to discuss what happened, don’t worry.”
His grip softened and his hand fell to my waist.
“Don’t leave your room.” I don’t know if it was meant as an order, it came out more as a plea.
“I won’t. Don’t worry about me.”
NOAH
Don’t worry about me, she says. If only that girl knew how much I fucking worry about her ass. Of all the shit Logan had pulled her into, that I invited him to pull her into, and she just went along for the ride like it’s nothing. How the fuck am I supposed to not worry about her when she’s the same amount of fucked up as my brother and me.
I watched Maddie head upstairs and toward her room. Only when I don’t see her anymore and I hear the door to her bedroom open and close do I walk into the office where my dad is waiting with Volokov, Logan is already there and for some reason Clara has joined.
Closing the door, I could feel the tension shift around everyone inside. Volokov sat on the chair facing my father's desk, his legs spread out and his body barely fitting in the leather-covered seat.
“Where’s Madeliene?” My dad asked.
Why did that matter?
“In her room,” I said and walked over to Dad’s desk where he sat with his hands leaning on the pile of papers. He looked calm like this wasn’t the most fucked up situation we’d ever been in, but I knew he was nervous, maybe even scared, but no man would ever show it.
“Go get her, please,”
What?
“No,” I said and narrowed my eyes.
Logan shifted on his feet where he stood at the corner of the desk. He held his hands behind his back and his chin out. When he wanted to, he could act like a good soldier. Or when he was too scared to oppose.
“It wasn’t a question, son. Get Maddie, now.”
Logan narrowed his eyes on our father, Clara stood smilingly behind him with a hand resting on his shoulder and when I turned around and dragged my eyes over Volokov, he lifted his head and sat back. The fucker knew who he was but he had been good enough not to bother any of the packs. Volokov stayed on his side, with the humans, he built a life for himself there and my punk-ass little brother just had to go and fuck him over.
‘Maddie.’
‘Yes?’
I wanted to tell her to run, to leave until this was all sorted out but there was not a chance. If Volokov wanted to talk to her, he’d rip through every one of our members to it. It’s better I keep him here in the house, if it came down to it, I’d deal with him myself.
‘Join us in the office’
