NOAH
I was staring tirelessly at the warrior’s form. Most of them had been whipped into perfection by Trevor before he left, and they were teaching the young, but then there was the middle category. Ages fifteen to twenty-five, they were pissing me off. Somehow, they had managed to slack off through the last few months of training, and it showed in their performance. To solve it, I paired each of them up with a thirty-plus fighter; they were the ones who trained the hardest and fought the best, and it was now their job to make the youngsters bleed. I needed everyone to perform at the highest level, no slackers and no glint of amusement. They should be sweating, cursing, and fighting until their bones feel like jelly. Only then were they allowed to leave, even if it took days.
The only rule I had for the thirty-plus fighter was that they couldn’t kill their partner, but beating them unconscious was fine. Their agility and speed forced the young to pick up, and desperation kicked in when they felt the first few rough hits. Covered in blood and breathing like rag rats, they were finally pushing through that first painful pang of pleading surrender. For some reason, while I walked between the warriors, I kept scratching my shoulder and up my neck. It felt like someone was brushing a feather over my skin, and even when my skin caught under my nails and the blood trickled down my collarbone, it didn’t go away.
“Dude, are you alright?” Logan came up behind me and I turned, noticing my nails still going at it, vigorously scratching the skin of my neck. I wiped the area clean and tried to control my body snaking from discomfort.
“I’m fine. Have you seen Maddie?” I asked. I was almost done with the warriors, and now that Logan was here, he could take over. It had already dragged out several hours longer than I planned, and I didn’t want Maddie to go on her first run alone.
“No, I heard she headed into town this morning.” Lifting my wrist, I looked at my watch. She’s been in town for five hours? I took out my phone, but she hadn’t texted or called. Fuck, I promised her we’d go for a run, did she leave alone?
“Alright, listen, you take over here. I have to go,” something was fucked, I knew that much and I needed to find Maddie and… I just needed to see her. I needed to see that she was fine.
“Yeah, go ahead,” Logan stepped aside and rolled up his sleeves. The warriors grunted behind me, knowing that Logan was double the menace that I was, and he was about to up the ante on all of them.
‘Maddie?’ I tried to contact her through the mind link, but no answer.
‘Maddie, you there?’ Still nothing.
The moment she drank my blood and I felt the pack bond locking in place, it was fucking euphoric. Not because of power, but because it was her. That was the first time I’d gotten a hard-on in months, and seeing the defiant glare in her eyes made it unbearable to control, but I managed it. That was before I tasted her. Before I touched her and felt her, before I fucked her tight pussy and licked every inch of her skin. Now she occupied every fucking corner of my mind and I could think of little else.
‘Do you smell her?’
‘No, head into town and we’ll hunt her down,’ Onyx said and prepared himself in the front.
I walked past my father on the gravel as he headed back home with Clara.
“Noah, where are you off to?” I was walking, planning on ignoring him, when his lapdog started yapping per usual.
“Noah, sweetheart! Will Olivia be coming over for dinner again? She was so sweet last time, I’d love to have her family over again.” That’s the first thing she says. No word about Maddie, nothing about the birthday of her fucking daughter. I stopped and flexed my fingers, willing myself not to turn around and rip her heart out. Instead, I used my speed and stood in front of her, provoking a gasp from my father.
“What day is it today?” I asked.
“Sorry?”
“What day is it today?” I repeated.
“Uhm,” she laughed and looked at Jack in confusion before turning back to me.
“Wednesday,” she said, and shrugged her shoulders.
“That’s it?” I asked. She sighed and cocked her head. Come on, say it, give me any indication that you don’t view your daughter as the inconvenience you so often make her out to be.
“What do you want to hear, sweetheart?”
A car drove up behind me, the tires screeched in the gravel and it stopped next to me. When I saw Trevor stepping out, I immediately thought we’d have another round like yesterday, but no, he seemed calm and composed and carried a bouquet of flowers in his hands. Midnight lilies.
“Trevor, you’re not welcome here,” Clara said and stuck that fucking chin out in the air.
“Of course he is,” I said and turned to her, making sure she saw the deadly seriousness in my eyes and begging her silently to challenge me.
“I’m not here to stir any trouble. I’m here for Maddie. Where is she?” I waited a bit to see if Clara would answer, but she was looking at me.
“I’m sure she’s off with her friends,” she said. What fucking friends?
“She’s in town, she’ll be back in a few hours. Can I bring her a message?” Trevor lifted his hand and gestured to the flowers.
“No, I’ll find her later. I just wanted to wish her a happy birthday, but here, you give these to her,” he handed me the flowers, and I saw the note tied to the stems. Clara drew a sharp breath, my father hung his head.
“Today is Maddie’s birthday?” Dad asked.
Trevor looked at Clara and noticed right away that she had forgotten. If you could see the anger waking up in his eyes, you’d fucking run.
“You forgot your daughter’s birthday? She’s getting her wolf today, Clara!”
“Don’t raise your voice at me,” she scolded. She looked around and patted my father’s shoulder, trying to put everyone at ease.
“It’s fine, I’m sure she’s having a great time, and we’ll make her a nice dinner tonight to celebrate.”
I won’t lie, seeing the disappointment on everyone’s faces was delicious, but what I missed was the embarrassment on Clara’s. The bitch didn’t feel a thing. Trevor got in his car and left without another word, leaving tire marks behind him as he sped out of the driveway. I pushed the bouquet into Clara’s hands and leaned down.
“These flowers better be in Maddie’s room when she gets back or your head will be what I put in a vase,” my warning rang loud and a growl came from my father, but he made no motion to interject.
