                    Aurora POV
Fur melts away and the animal’s body shifts to reform as a man. Thorne stands before me as if he wasn’t just a wolf. He waits for me to do or say something, but I’m frozen to the spot. Naked on the floor by the bed.
With a sigh, he quickly pulls on a pair of pants before he walks around the bed and yanks the sheet off of it. He easily lifts me to my feet and wraps the sheet around me, securing it like a strange dress.
When I still don’t speak, he takes my chin between his fingers and brings my eyes to his.
“Are you alright?”
I blink then nod.
He studies me for a moment before saying, “I went for a morning run, and when I got back, there was a group of gammas training. I was just getting them to stop growling, which is probably what you heard.”
Again, I nod as relief fills me. I’ve heard wolves growl before, mainly in their human form, but never like this. I guess my fear comes from knowing that I’m not supposed to be near Thorne and that the wolves here are all ranked wolves, meaning they’re the much stronger werewolves.
“Wolf got your tongue?” Thorne asks, and I jerk back.
“N-no. I should get dressed,” I mutter, running to the bathroom.
With the transfer of fifty thousand to the creditor’s account, I sigh in relief. My next order of business is to find a job. After what Jackson did, I’m not working for him any longer. Even if he hadn’t fired me, I would’ve quit.
There’s no going back to him in any form. Not even for work.
For the next few hours, I apply for job after job, calling business to ask if they are hiring, only to be turned down by everyone I speak with. Even those I send emails to, I get rejections almost immediately.
“What’s wrong?”
I jump at Thorne’s voice behind me, and I whirl around. He left earlier for a meeting, and I hadn’t heard him come back in.
“I’ve been looking for a job, but I everyone is turning me down,” I tell him, pointing at my laptop screen. He walks up behind me, leans over my shoulder, and peers at the screen. We’re not touching, but I can feel the heat from his body seeping through my clothes. I bet if I were to turn around, I’d easily be able to kiss him…
Which I don’t want to do.
What are you thinking, Aurora? I mentally curse myself and shake my head.
“I’ve been looking for an assistant and seeing as you have experience and I’m somewhat familiar with you, you can have the job.”
And just like that, he walked off to the kitchen, leaving me to mull over what just happened. It takes a minute, but the shock sets in, and I stare at Thorne as he slides his gray suit jacket off and sets it aside to fix himself a cup of coffee.
The action makes me look down at my own clothes. He had sent someone to get my things and bring them here, and I realize that my clothes are definitely not up to Thorne’s standards. I don’t have appropriate work clothes for an Alpha-run company.
“I’ll have my personal shoppers bring you more appropriate clothing,” he finally says. How does he do that? Can werewolves read minds? No one had ever said anything about that, but he reads me too easily for it to be a guess.
“I don’t…” I pause when he turns to me, his eyes moving over my outfit. My face, again, flushes in embarrassment, and I sit back down, mumbling, “Thank you.”
He grunts in response, pulls out his phone, and walks out of the room.
Apparently, personal shoppers are fast, because two women show up around an hour later with several bags of luxury brand clothes. My eyes widen when they begin pulling outfits out of the various bags.
They pull me to the bed, holding outfits up and tossing them aside. One lady shoves a heeled pump on my foot while the other holds a skirt suit up to me.
“These will do,” one says, nodding to several outfits that are now laid out on the bed.
“Yes,” the other woman says while looking me up and down. “The Alpha once had a human girl like you, but he quickly discarded her.”
Her words were meant to be sly and underhanded, but I try to ignore them. If Thorne wants to discard me soon, I’m fine with that. It’s part of our contract, so nothing they say will change that. I’m prepared for what’s to come.
Silently, I vow to make the most of this job opportunity seeing as it could be crucial for my new future.
Soon, the women leave me alone with my new clothes and a knock sounds at the bedroom door door. The next moment, the door pushes open, revealing Thorne. He watches as I hang the last outfit in the closet and then he steps into the room.
“Werewolf work hours in the pack are from two PM to ten PM,” he says, leaning against the doorframe.
“Yes, sir,” I say, nodding. I’d been on that schedule at Jackson’s studio, so it’s not new to me. It’s different than in the human quarter where I grew up with a more normal schedule. “Can I ask for a favor?”
At my question, he raises a brow. I take that as my que, so I ask, “I would like to keep our relationship private.”
“If everyone knew you were my mistress, you would have unlimited resources,” he says, and the hint of interest in his eyes and tone let me know he’s testing me. I have a feeling he’s not used to trusting people, and I don’t blame him. If someone had just agreed to give me their body for money, I’d probably be cautious too.
Sighing, I turn fully to him now and look directly into his eyes, “Unlimited resources or not, I can’t be your mistress forever.”
Thorne’s head ticks to the side ever so slightly as he studies me for the millionth time. I’m not entirely sure what he’s looking for, but I stay quiet, giving him the chance to learn whatever he can.
I try not to fidget under his gaze, but I can’t help it. He’s so intense.
“Even if you didn’t bring it up, I would insist you not disclose our relationship either,” Thorne says with a nod. “Make sure you’re on time for work.”
With that, he turns and leaves me alone. Again.
It’s not like I want him to stay, but it’s strange when he just leaves so abruptly.
Sighing, I glance at the time to see it’s almost twelve. If I get ready now, I could be at his company a little before two.
I choose one of the new outfits, and after showering and fixing my hair in a low bun, I add a dash of makeup and get dressed. The heels are a bit high for my taste, but this is the nicest I think I’ve ever dressed.
Making sure to grab my laptop and other necessities, I slide them into my bag before leaving the house. The company is close, since we’re on pack grounds, so I decide to walk. Several people stare at me as I pass, probably because not in the Human Quarter of the pack lands, but I keep going until I’m outside of the company.
I’m not the only one here, though.
Jackson growls when he sees me, “Give it up, Aurora. Following me to work won’t make me take you back.”
“Excuse me?” I turn on him, glaring. “I’m not here for you, Jackson. I’ve moved on, and I’m here for work.”
He stares for a moment before he cracks a smile and laughs, “Yeah. Right. Don’t bother with your lies.” He shoves my shoulder, making me stumble back a step. “Didn’t you hook up with Thorne? Looks like he’s already discarded you if you’re moping out here in front of the company.”
Darting forward, I open my mouth to respond, but a loud blare of a horn sounds. Looking up, I spot Thorne’s car, and in that moment, he narrows his eyes at us.
At his gaze, I suddenly take note of how close Jakson and I are standing. I jump back, but it’s too late.
The anger in Thorne’s eyes blazes bright.
