Aurora POV
The smell of coffee fills the air as I wipe my jacket over Thorne’s lap. His scent, sharp and clean, mixes with the heady coffee smell. Something inside me responds to the scent, but I ignore it as I try to clean up the mess I made.
“Wait outside, Ivy,” Thorne calls out, his voice huskier than it had been moments ago.
As I run my jacket down his lap again, I freeze. The arousal simmering lightly beneath the surface of my skin rises, heating my body, when I feel Thorne’s arousal under my hands.
He’s hard, his cock straining against his slacks.
“You did this on purpose, didn’t you?” Thorne rumbles, cupping my chin and lifting my eyes to his. There’s anger in his eyes, but I also see… hunger? I suck in a sharp breath and swallow the desire building in my own body, shoving it down. I’m not supposed to want him, but my body clearly only remembers how he made me feel.
“I’ll have to show you later, why you shouldn’t tease me at work, little human,” he growls, and I jump to my feet. The warning, or threat, sends my body reeling.
“I-I’m sorry. I’ll leave,” I mutter, and without waiting for his answer, I rush to the door and leave the room.
I nearly run into Ivy during my escape, which only makes things worse. She grabs my arm, her eyes flaring with anger when she recognizes me.
“You?!” She hisses, “My informant said a human started working here, but I didn’t expect it to be you.”
Her eyes move over my shoulder to Thorne’s office as she smirks, “Seems like you’re really something, getting into the Alpha’s office.” I’m not sure why, but her words make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Maybe it’s the way her eyes narrow on me or the way her nails dig into my arm, but I know a threat when I see it.
Slowly, Ivy leans in and whispers, “And I have plenty of ways to make sure you don’t stay in this office.”
“I’m sorry about what happened before, but I’m dedicated to this job,” I tell her, trying to placate her. I don’t need any more trouble today. “I’m going to prove myself through my abilities because this is a big opportunity for me.”
Ivy merely scoffs at my words, releases my arm, and turns to leave, but before she goes, she glances over her shoulder and says, “Good luck.”
There is no kindness in her tone, only malice and warning. For some reason, I feel like she just challenged me, and I don’t know if this is a challenge I can win.
Seeing Sophie awake as I walk into her hospital room instantly lifts my spirits. I hug her gently, not wanting to hurt her weaker form, and sit on the edge of her bed.
“Are you feeling alright?” I ask, looking over her. She’s still pale, but a little bit of color seems to have come back to her cheeks.
“I’m okay, just tired.”
The same answer as always, but I know she means it. She wouldn’t lie to me about something so important. Nodding, I take her hand in mine, brushing my fingers over her skinny hand, while she studies my face.
“What’s wrong? You look upset.”
“A lot has happened since I talked to you last,” I mutter. Sophie squeezes my hand in silent support, something I don’t have much of these days. My mother is always dealing with my stepfather, my stepfather doesn’t care about anything other than his gambling, and Sophie… she’s too sick to do much.
“Is it the hospital bills? I’m sor—”
“No,” I blurt. “It’s not the bills.”
How do I tell her? She liked Jackson and has been gushing about going to our wedding since I told her that we were mates. Sophie always said Jackson was the best thing to happen to me. I nearly laugh at the thought now.
He’s the reason I’m in such a mess.
“It’s not your fault that you’re sick, Soph, but that’s not it,” I tell her, and again, she squeezes my hand. “Jackson… He kicked me out of the house and is marrying someone else.”
Sophie blinks at me, her mouth dropping open.
“He abandoned you?!” She cries, the heartrate monitor beeping wildly. “H-he can’t do that. Wh-why… would… he can’t…”
I watch with terror as Sophie’s eyes roll back in her head, worry rushing through me as I dive for the nurse’s call button. I press it several times, calling out for the nurse. I didn’t mean to make Sophie pass out.
“Sophie?”
When she doesn’t respond, I press the nurse’s button again, “Nurse!”
With their usual lack of interest, the nurse walks into the room. The doctor follows behind her, and I can’t help but feel angry. Sophie could have been dying, and they decided to take their sweet time showing up.
It’s ridiculous.
“She passed out. I’m not sure if she’s alright, could you—”
“Doctor, we need you out here!” Someone from the hallway calls. “Alpha Reed’s son needs you.”
The moment the voice said Alpha, I knew what would happen, and I’m not wrong. The doctor turns and rushes out of Sophie’s room. They would never stay to help a human when a werewolf of such a high rank needed them.
Angry, I take one more glance at Sophie before going to the hallway where the group of people are gathered around the man sitting on a chair.
“Please, I need someone to check on my sister,” I call out.
“Wait a minute,” the man sitting down- who I assume is the high-ranking wolf- says. He glares at me as the doctor looks at his arm. From where I stand, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with his arm.
“Please!” I call louder. “At least send one of the nurses to check on my sister!”
Someone bumps into me, sending me falling back against the wall as more nurses rush to the man’s side. He grins at them, ignoring me now.
Everyone ignores me.
Frustration and anger at the unfair treatment fill me, bringing tears to my eyes that blur my vision. My feet move before I can stop them, and soon, my fingers wrap around the arm of one of the nurses. I yank her back, making her yelp from surprise.
“Check on my sister!” I order, pointing at Sophie’s room.
The man the nurses and doctors are fawning over stands, and everyone moves aside as he walks to me. He’s tall, not as tall as Thorne, and definitely big enough to squash me.
“Don’t you know your place, human?” He growls, shoving me back. I hit the wall harder this time and gasp from the pain that sparks in my shoulder.
“I—”
My ringing phone cuts me off, and when I look down, it’s Thorne.
“I have to take this.”
I answer, lifting the phone to my ear in time to hear Thorne ask, “Why aren’t you at home?”
“I’ll be there soon. I’m visiting my sister, but the—”
“That’s right, human. Crawl back into your hole and leave the rest of us alone,” the rude man growls loudly, and I can’t stop the squeak that escapes me as he pushes me to the wall again.
Silence, then a growl fills the phone.
“Give the phone to Reed,” Thorne says, catching me off guard. “Now, Aurora.”
I pull the phone away from my ear and hold it up to the man, “It’s for you.”
“What?” He barks into the phone, but his arrogance lasts two seconds before his body deflates in fear, and he passes the phone back to me.
“Get this woman the treatment she’s asking for,” the man growls before stomping off.
Blinking, I watch as a nurse and doctor rush into Sophie’s room. The rude man glances at me one more time before disappearing down the hallway.
“I don’t know what you said, but thank you, Thorne.”
Thorne POV
Something strangely similar to sympathy swells in my chest at Aurora’s small thank you. It sends a warning flag up. Am I caring too much about her?
“Alpha, don’t forget you have dinner with your parents tonight,” Jace says, popping his head into my office. I sigh. I’d forgotten about dinner.
“Thanks, Jace,” I mutter, standing and stretching.
“Um, Alpha, you should be prepared,” he says, and I look up. “The old Alpha and Luna are still concerned about your marriage.”
I nearly groan at his words.
“Thanks for reminding me, Jace.”
Rubbing at my temples, I try to chase away the headache building behind my eyes. They’ve been on my back recently about mating and marriage. I didn’t really need the reminder, but knowing what I’m walking into is better than going blind.
They’ll receive the same answer I always give them; I’m not planning to marry anytime soon.
