                    Aurora POV
I waited for Thorne all night, sure he would show up for sex. His words in the office had hinted as much, so did the phone call I got while I was at the hospital. However, he never showed up.
After two hours of tossing and turning, I finally fell asleep. I figured he would wake me up if he arrived, but when I woke up, the sun was shining through the windows, and I got ready for work.
Thorne not showing up made me realize that I am really on his schedule. He’s going to choose and pick when he comes to see me, and I’ll just have to deal with that like the contract said. I try not to let it bother me as I enter work and make my way to my desk.
It would’ve been nice if he told me not to wait up, but there’s nothing I can do about that.
So, I pull on my big girl panties and plaster a polite smile on my face before entering his office.
“Good mor—”
He’s not here.
Thorne’s chair sits empty behind his desk, and I sigh, turn around, and go back to my desk. I guess he isn’t here today even though I have a long list of tasks waiting for me when I sit down. The list is almost twice the length of the one from yesterday. Some of the tasks even include leaving the office to run some errands.
A sliver of annoyance filters though me when I see the task to pick up his suit from the tailor. Though, I can’t be too irritated. Part of my job is to complete ‘other tasks as assigned.’
Throughout the day, I work my way down my list, only stopping when someone raps their knuckles on my desk. I jerk my head up, expecting to see Isla or one of Ivy’s minions, but instead, the Beta stands there.
“Can I eat with you?” He asks, holding up a takeout container. I glance at the clock. I didn’t even notice it was lunch time.
“Why me? There are plenty of people I’m sure you’d rather be around.” I admit, I’m curious. Why would someone as highly ranked as a Beta want to sit at my desk and eat lunch with me?
Beta Jace smiles and sets his food down, answering, “I just wanted to ask you something.”
That’s it?
My eyes scan the nearly empty office, and I realize everyone else went to lunch.
“What did you want to ask me?” I question, pulling out my own lunch. My stomach growls loudly as rich scents of our food fill the air.
“What would you do if Thorne got married?” He asks while casually taking a bite of his lunch.
I pause with my meager sandwich halfway to my mouth, “I would leave him. I wouldn’t be his mistress.”
The Beta’s brows jump up, “You gain unimaginable resources in the werewolf world by relying on Thorne. Don’t you want that?”
I can sense his genuine curiosity in his question, so I answer, “I’ve already tarnished myself by basically selling my body to Thorne. Once our contract is up, I will move on. We both will. I can’t degrade myself further by fawning over someone who only sees me as a quick fuck.”
He cringes at my crass words, but it’s the truth. I never thought I’d lower myself to this, but it’s already done.
“What if he doesn’t just see it as a quick…” Beta Jace clears his throat, looks around, then says, “Fuck. I’ve seen the way he watches you, and he’s never been that attentive with anyone before.”
“Thorne was clear in his intentions,” I say, biting into my sandwich.
Beta Jace mumbles something about stubborn people before resting his arm on my desk and leaning a bit closer, “The way he ordered me to watch over you today was anything but platonic or merely sexual.”
I pause at that. I don’t know where Thorne is, but I didn’t think he would have anyone watching out for me. For a second, I want to ask what he said, but I stop myself before I can ask. It doesn’t matter.
This will end soon, and I’ll be nothing more than a distant memory to Thorne.
“In fact, I booked a restaurant for the two of you, so that when Thorne returns, you can eat together,” Beta Jace says, stealing my attention again.
“No, I couldn’t. I don’t have the money—”
“Don’t worry about that,” he says, waving a hand in the air between us. “I’m covering it.”
“I don’t understand why you’re doing this.”
Beta Jace smiles, genuinely as he answers, “I’ve known Thorne a long time and I’ve never seen him this serious with a girl before. I hope the two of you can enjoy this relationship for however long it lasts.”
Warmth blooms in my chest from his words. I’m flattered, but I can’t stop the suspicion and doubt that creep in.
Ivy POV
That little witch. How is she getting the men to pay attention to her? First, my brother, and now the Beta?
She’s a lowly human, so how is she bewitching them?
Aurora is far more cunning than I thought she would be, and seeing how close she is with the Beta, I realize she must have seduced him to get the assistant position. No one would look twice at her if that wasn’t the case.
An idea forms in my mind, and I smirk. If she wants to encroach on my territory, I’ll show her that she can’t come here without consequences.
“Andrew, bring Chandler to see me,” I call, and Andrew, one of my most loyal spies rushes to do what I told him.
Within minutes, he returns with Chandler following, I smile sweetly.
“Chandler, I heard that my brother’s new secretary might have a crush on you.”
“Really? She’s so pretty, and I was thinking about asking her out,” he says, grinning.
“I think she’s shy, but you should totally go flirt with her. I’m sure she would instantly agree to go out with you,” I lie. The man grins even happier before thanking me and rushing out of the room.
Andrew and I watch him leave, and once he’s gone, I turn to Andrew, “Make sure you get pictures that clearly show her and bring them back to me.”
Not even an hour later, Andrew comes back to my office with the evidence I need. Pictures of Chandler flirting with Aurora in the break room, except from the angle Andrew took the pictures, it looks like they’re kissing and flirting with each other, instead of it being one sided.
“Send them to me.”
Soon, I have the images printed and in an envelope labeled “office romance.”
I leave them on my brother’s desk, a note beside the envelope that says, “When you’re not around, this is what Aurora reveals about herself. Fire her.”
The moment my brother sees these pictures, he’ll be furious. He hates office romances, so he’ll kick her out of the company, and this will be the end of little human Aurora.
