                    Jackson POV
My phone rings from underneath my piles of paperwork, and I dig through them to snatch it up.
“This is Jackson.”
“Sir,” my assistant’s voice greets me. “I have news that could be useful to you.”
Instantly interested, I drop the paperwork and focus on the call, asking, “What is it?”
“I’ve heard whispers that Alpha Thorne’s most beloved lover is going to be at the dinner tonight,” he says on a whisper. I glance around, making sure no one is listening. This is big. I’ve been looking for a way to get on the Alpha’s good side, and this could be my chance.
“Have my good suit prepared and ready for me when I leave work,” I instruct. If I can get on this woman’s good side, I might be able to convince her to help me. Since Thorne rejected my project, I’ve been looking for any weakness or flaw that I could extort to get him to accept my project. I didn’t want to use dirty tricks at first because he could easily figure out who is behind such dealings, but this is different.
If he has a lover, I’ll let her do the talking and convincing. A strong man only kneels before the woman he loves, and if Thorne loves this woman, I’ll just have to use his weakness against him.
The gathering has already started when I arrive, but that’s alright. People greet me as I enter, taking notice of me being fashionably late and giving me all their attention. Just as I planned.
While I greet the people who come up to me, I let my eyes scan the crowd for Alpha Thorne. If my assistant was right, she’s here somewhere. Thorne hasn’t brought this woman into the public eye yet, and even if he’s hiding her, I’d bet that his lover will be close to him tonight.
All I need to do is figure out who is closest to him.
His tall figure catches my eye quickly, and when I look to the woman beside him, I grow irritated. Familiar silver hair and a petite frame. Aurora. What is she doing here? This is a pack dinner, and she is definitely not that.
She follows the Alpha around like a lost kitten, staying quiet as he greets and talks with pack members. She’s never more than a few steps away from him, even when he moves across the room to speak with Beta Jace.
My irritation grows as I watch them. Most of the higher ranked pack members are present for the dinner, but none of the women stick close to Thorne for longer than the time it takes them to greet him or have short conversations.
No mistress or lover in sight. It’s just Aurora.
Unless… I catch a glimpse of Thorne’s hand on Aurora’s lower back as he moves her aside. The touch is casual. Too casual for a boss and assistant relationship, but there’s no way Alpha Thorne would take Aurora as his lover.
His disdain for humans, especially human women, is widely known within the pack.
Again, I watch Thorne maneuver around Aurora, touching her arm casually as he talks with Beta Jace. Aurora looks comfortable at the Alpha’s side, even as she looks around the room with wide, curious eyes.
When someone bumps into Aurora, she reaches out to Thorne. He steadies her, without looking away from the Beta, and he moves slightly behind Aurora with the ease of someone who is used to being around her.
He wouldn’t take a human lover, though, would he?
Needing to know, I continue watching them, and soon, Aurora breaks off from Thorne. She walks away and down the hallway where the bathrooms are, so I follow. I’m several feet behind her when she enters the bathroom, and after a second of no one going in or coming out, I slip inside.
I flip the lock to make sure no one else can enter.
A moment later, a stall opens and Aurora steps out. Satisfaction swells in my chest when she gasps and stares wide-eyed at me.
“J-Jackson, what are yo—”
“I thought you couldn’t fall any lower than you already were, Aurora,” I say, watching as she grows confused and frightened. It does something to me, watching her emotions change so quickly.
I still affect her.
“Excuse me?”
Knowing she hates it, I don’t answer her. Instead, I move closer, watching as she backs up and bumps into a stall. She stumbles, the sound of her racing heart reaching my ears as I get closer. I like the feeling of power that falls over me with her frightened expression.
Reaching out, I take her chin between my thumb and index finger, forcing her to look up at me.
“He wouldn’t choose you, would he?” I ask, looking her up and down. “I know you slept with him, but there’s no way an Alpha like Thorne would lower himself and take you as his lover…” I let my eyes trail down her body, remembering how she felt beneath me. “I suggest you be careful with how close you get to Thorne, Aurora, or there will be a target painted on your back before you know it.”
She may be brave for coming to this gathering, but even Aurora feels the threat in my words. I can see the emotions flicker in her eyes. She tries not to show them but fails when her lips begin to tremble.
“Let me go, Jackson,” she mutters, trying to pull away. I don’t let her go, though, wanting to see how far I can take this. She was mine once, and maybe I can bring her back to heel. She was a good little pet; someone I enjoyed playing with when Ivy was being a brat.
There was also the perk of her being my mate, which made the sex better.
Even so, I’m not looking for a future with someone as weak as her. Aurora has nothing to offer other than a good time.
The thick, heavy scent of Aurora’s fear fills the air as she stares up at me. I pull her closer, making her gasp. Another thrill skates down my spine. It’s too easy to pull a reaction from her.
I chuckle.
“Watch yourself, Aurora,” I growl before releasing her and leaving the women’s bathroom.
I was wrong. A pathetic, frightened little human like Aurora could never be Thorne’s mistress or lover. There has to be someone else, which means the intel my assistant found was probably wrong.
When I arrive back at the dining hall, I scan the room once more for a she-wolf that might be Thorne’s lover. Thorne is now talking to Emma, Beta Jace’s sister. She laughs at something the Alpha said and touches his arm flirtatiously. Thorne doesn’t reject the contact, but he doesn’t accept it either.
He merely continues talking with her.
There aren’t many people who Alpha Thorne spends his time with, but I’ve noticed him talk with Emma more than a few times. It could be a coincidence, since she’s the Beta’s sister, but it could also be a sign.
Emma would be a much better option for Thorne, since she is a werewolf and she has a high rank. She has everything Aurora doesn’t have, which makes her a better possibility. I’ll have to look more into their relationship.
