Aurora POV
It’s been two days since the bridal shop fiasco, so I thought Ivy would leave me alone. I was wrong because she’s currently marching up to my desk with Jackson following behind her.
What now?
“You’re joining Jackson to the meeting about our wedding venues while I head to the florist to fix a problem,” Ivy demands smugly. Am I the only one who thinks it’s strange that she keeps trying to put me and Jackson together?
The last person I want to be around right now is my ex, yet his fiancé- a woman who hates me- keeps putting us in the same room together. It’s suspicious and has my guard going up. I don’t know if it’s her idea or Jackson’s idea, but being alone with him is not how I want to spend any of my time.
I pause at the thought.
Just a month ago, I was excited to see him, to be around him for any amount of time, and now I’ve done a complete 180 change. The irony isn’t lost on me as I glance at Thorne’s office. I want to tell him what’s going on, but again, he’s out at a meeting.
He’s been busy the last few days, talking with Alphas and making plans for upcoming visits to other packs. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about Ivy’s attitude.
“Let’s go. We can’t be late,” Jackson orders, and I narrow my best annoyed glare at him. When he smirks, I realize I gave him exactly what he wanted. A reaction.
Schooling my features, putting my mask of indifference back in place, I stand and begrudgingly follow Jackson. Halfway through the building, he wraps a hand around my wrist and starts dragging me like I’m not moving fast enough for him.
I yank my arm out of his hold just as we reach his car. He doesn’t like my actions, so he proceeds to shove me into the car before climbing in and starting it up.
Sighing, I buckle in and glare at the man treating me like I’m his personal assistant. I can’t believe at one point I wanted to marry him. I had been so ready to marry him and so desperate for love that I ignored any sign of what Jackson was really like.
And now, the more I see of him, the more I don’t like. His attitude change has been surprising, and it’s like I never really knew him at all in the first place.
“Get out. We’re late,” Jackson orders.
Even though I’d rather get slapped than listen to his orders, I climb out and follow him inside. A smiley woman greets us as we sit in a secluded booth.
“From the parameters your mate gave me,” the woman starts speaking while pulling out a folder. Her use of the word mate makes me uncomfortable, even as she continues, “I narrowed down the number of venues from the city to our four best venues. These should work well for what your mate has in mind.”
She lays out four papers in front of us, each detailing the venue locations and the wedding packages they provide.
“This one is our top option, which provides food, seating, decorations, and allows outside food along with extended hours if needed,” the woman says, sliding the first paper over to Jackson.
Again, I find myself wondering why I’m here as she begins to go into detail about each venue. Jackson listens to her spiels. I don’t. There is really no point in me being here other than to waste my time, and I wouldn’t put it past Jackson and Ivy to mess with me by dragging me around.
Is this their way of rubbing their relationship in my face? I glance at Jackson, shifting away from him when his hand brushes the side of my leg. He doesn’t look at me, but that doesn’t mean it was an accident.
“Thank you for this information, Ms. Bane,” Jackson says, breaking me out of my thoughts. “If it’s alright with you, I will take this information back to my mate, and we’ll be in touch soon with our decision.”
Again, something touches my thigh just before Jackson stands and shakes the woman’s hand.
This sleezeball.
Now, I have no doubt that he’s the one who chose to bring me along on this little trip. Jackson’s motives are still a bit suspicious, but with these little touches and the way he again grabs me by the arm, I have a feeling he’s up to something.
I’ve been trying my best to stay away from him, but it’s hard when we work in the same building. Also, I’m tired of seeing him and hearing about him every day, whether it’s in a meeting or just in the hallways.
Sometimes, I think he shows up around me just to remind me that he’s still there. When I ignore him, I’ve noticed that he sometimes gets annoyed or angry. It makes me wonder if he still thinks he has some sort of claim over me. After everything he’s done, I feel like he should have forgotten about me because of his relationship with Ivy.
It doesn’t seem like it, though. I’m trying to move on, but he seems to be trying to hang onto whatever was once between us. Not that there’s anything left. I have no affection for a man who cheated on me, hurt me, lied to me, and abandoned me.
I can’t figure out why he’s acting this way.
“You shouldn’t have embarrassed Ivy the other day,” Jackson growls as we grow closer to work. “Or me.”
“Embarrass you? Jackson, I’ve already told you that I want nothing to do with you,” I say, gritting my teeth. “You’re dead to me, so stop trying to force me into a corner because you think you can control me. You can’t.”
I notice how Jackson’s hands tighten on the steering wheel at my words. Clearly, I was right. He wants to control me. I stay silent for the rest of the ride, and the moment we get back to the office, I jump out of the car.
Jackson is fast, and within seconds, he grabs me by the arm and drags me back to him.
“You should know your place, Auror—”
Spinning, I slam my heel into Jackson’s shin and run toward the building. I run straight to Thorne’s office, noticing that there’s no one around, including Thorne. I slam Thorne’s office door behind me, locking it and pushing against it with what little strength I have in my shaky limbs.
The lack of people makes it easy for Jackson to follow me, yelling as he pounds on the door.
“I’m not done with you, Aurora!” The door shakes with the force of Jackson’s fist, making me jolt and gasp.
What is he thinking?
“You are.”
Two simple words, and my body slides to the floor. There’s a shuffling sound on the other side of the door. I instinctively relax just knowing Thorne is out there, and I lean back against the door, only moving when I hear a soft knock.
“Aurora, you can come out now.”
Jackson is nowhere in sight when I open the door. It’s just Thorne standing before me with his arms crossed over his chest.
“He won’t bother you anymore,” he says confidently, and I wish that were true. I don’t think Jackson will let go of his pride so easily. He’ll do what he can to get back at me for today.
Anyway, I nod to let Thorne know that I heard him. He steps toward me, opening his mouth to say something, but Ivy shows up before I can speak.
“You’ve been summoned to my parents’ house.”
