                    Jackson’s POV
Knowing someone’s life is in your hands is unexpectedly thrilling. The looks of fear and distress that fill Aurora’s face send a shiver of anticipation through me. It’s strong and addicting, this feeling. It flows through my veins, giving me a boost of adrenaline and sending sparks of life into me.
I take a deep breath, savoring the sensation.
Is this why people become adrenaline junkies? It almost feels like the first time I went on a hunt and caught my prey. That feeling of satisfaction and power makes me wonder why I haven’t done something this risky before. How many different situations could I cook up to prolong this feeling?
Would I always need to put someone else in danger or could I change the conditions of the situation?
I look back out the window at my prey, watching as she realizes the weight of the situation she’s in.
Aurora’s head whips from side to side before landing on me, though she doesn’t know it’s me. The curtains distort my face enough that she probably only sees a man standing here. I’m tempted to pull the curtain aside, to show her who is responsible for the situation she’s in, but I hold myself back.
If she tells anyone, especially Thorne, that I’m the one who trapped her, I won’t be able to talk myself out of this. Things will just have to stay anonymous for now.
With a wave, I dart away from the door and down the stairs.
All I have to do now is wait and watch Thorne rescue his lover. Once that happens, I’ll have confirmation of their relationship, and I can decide what to do with that information.
People around me talk and drink, unaware of the human woman in danger. That is, until a piercing scream fills the air. I’ve never felt happy about someone screaming, but again, the sound sends that delicious thrill through my body.
Everyone freezes momentarily before rushing toward the front doors. I follow, pretending to be surprised and worried at the sound. The crowd pushes out to the front lawn, women gasping and men shouting when they see Aurora standing as close to the edge of the balcony as possible.
From this far away, they can’t see the snakes, but the loud hissing and rattling are a dead giveaway.
“Help me!” Aurora wails. Even from three stories down, I can see how white her knuckles are from clutching the rail at her back.
Call for your lover. Do it.
“Someone help me! Please!” She cries, not using Thorne’s name. It suddenly has me smirking. If she wants to make things difficult for me, then she deserves what she’s getting. I won’t let her ruin my plans.
Turning my head, I look for Thorne, but as I scan the crowd, I don’t see him. The Alpha isn’t here. Instead, another man, one from the Redwater Pack, pushes through to the front of the crowd. Beta Jace stands at his side, digging through his pockets for a phone.
Good. Good.
Maybe Beta Jace can get Thorne to arrive in time.
“Aurora!” The man from the Redwater Pack shouts. I didn’t realize anyone here knew Aurora. This could be a problem if he’s able to get here before Thorne can save her.
“Th-The door is locked!” She cries, looking down at the man for a second before looking back at the snakes. “A-and there are snakes up here!”
The man’s body tenses up, and I growl. Who the hell is he? Where is Thorne? This isn’t how this rescue was supposed to go. Everyone else was supposed to hang back while Thorne rushed in to save the damsel.
Again, they’re ruining my plans and making things difficult for me.
“Can you get around them?” The man asks, watching Aurora with worry. This man is going to ruin my experiment. Again, I look around for Thorne. He was here when I left to prepare the trap, so where the hell is he now?
“NO!” Aurora wails, her voice cracking. The crowd whispers and watches as she screams again and jumps up. Her ass lands on the rail, supposedly to get away from the snakes, and she teeters.
The crowd gasps again when she nearly falls back, but I hold my breath for an entirely different reason. Would she fall?
Thorne is still nowhere to be seen, I realize, even after all her screaming. If they were in a relationship, he would be here to save her. But maybe, he doesn’t care about her after all. She is a human, and it’s hard to imagine Thorne pampering and loving a human, but I had been so sure after their flirting in the bedroom earlier.
Was I wrong?
Aurora’s POV
I can’t breathe. My feet touch the ground again, without my permission, and the snakes don’t like that. The rattling and hissing grow louder as my heart tries to tear itself free of my chest.
One of the snakes comes closer, its head bobbing left and right like it’s looking for an opening to strike.
“Aurora, you need to get out of there!” Joseph yells from the ground. I want to look but I can’t pull my eyes off the snakes.
Where is Thorne? I want Thorne, but I don’t dare call out to him. If he were here, he would’ve saved me already. When I looked a moment ago, I didn’t see him, which means he’s still in the forest with Alpha Sanders.
So who is going to save me?
I cry out, climbing back up on the rail when one of the snake heads flies forward. He misses me by inches as I lift my feet up.
“Aurora, jump! It’s the only way to get away from the snakes!”
“I can’t!” I scream. Is he crazy? Am I crazy? There’s no other way, but if I hit the ground the wrong way, I’ll be killed. I’m not like them. Werewolves can heal fast, but I’m just a normal human. A jump like this could be so much worse for me than for someone like him.
“You have to!” Joseph yells. I glance back at him, rocking and crying out when I nearly fall. His arms are up, stretching toward me. “I’ll catch you, but if you’re trapped, you need to get away from those snakes. They’re probably venomous!”
I already thought of that. The rattling kind of gave it away.
They look and sound like rattlesnakes.
I want to scream again, but the sound gets lodged in my throat at the thought. My choices are death by venom or possible death by jumping three stories to the ground.
“You’ll catch me?”
“I will. I promise.”
I look back at him again, but the snake hisses, pulling my attention. It’s poised to strike, this time much closer. Too close. It’s going to get me if I don’t move.
But I’m frozen. My fingers won’t move.
Until it strikes. The snake flies forward, and I’m suddenly falling backwards. My fear grows, my pounding heart becoming the only thing I can hear as the ground beneath me disappears. I try to grab for something, anything to hold onto, but there’s nothing.
My body tumbles through the air, a scream ripping from my body as I fall.
