Thorne’s POV
“This is where the border was disturbed,” Sanders says, crouching in his human form as I try to find a scent in my wolf form.
An odd, sour smell reaches my nose, and I growl.
“I smell it too. It’s a scent blocker,” Sanders says. I nod. Whoever was snooping around his forest was prepared and didn’t want to be found.
Sanders stands and looks around, his golden wolf eyes glowing in the dark. “We shouldn’t wait around here for long. This is where rattlesnakes like to nest, and we don’t want to run into one or multiple rattlers.”
I had noticed the slick, scaly scent when we arrived, but guessed the area had been abandoned since we haven’t seen any snakes. Though, they could be hunting like we are.
“We’re probably not going to find the intruder,” Sanders speaks up again, moving back toward me. “We might as well finish our check and head back to the banquet. Dinner should be ready soon.”
Back to the banquet and back to Aurora. I hate that I left her alone for a second time tonight, but she didn’t protest, which I appreciated. Even as a human, she seems to understand that I have duties to attend to.
“Let’s—”
A scream pierces the air, and every hair on my body stands on end. My paws are moving before my mind processes the sound.
“Aurora!” My wolf howls, pushing against the wall between us. My paws pound the ground as I push myself to move faster, to get there sooner. I can hear Sanders running behind me, but I don’t bother to wait for him.
I run.
A second scream fills the air, sending shockwaves of worry and fear into my body. I know, without a doubt, that Aurora is the one screaming. I would know her voice anywhere, and that scares me. She shouldn’t be in danger here despite the warnings we gave her.
She should be safe.
Every prayer I can think of flies from my mind to the Goddess. Aurora has to be alright. If anyone at that party touched her, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from tearing them to shreds. They will regret the day they decided to even look at Aurora by the time I’m done with them. They will beg for mercy or death.
And they will learn that Aurora is mine, and no one would hurt her.
No one would touch her.
The edge of the forest comes into view as I jump over a fallen tree. Come on. Come on. I loosen the reigns on my wolf, letting his power mix with mind to move faster. I feel like I’m flying as I burst through the tree line. Sanders is right behind me, struggling to keep up.
I scan my surroundings, my eyes landing on the pack house just in time for another scream to fill the air.
Aurora, balancing on the edge of the balcony tilts back and drops through the air. My entire body lurches, a roar tearing from me as I race forward. She falls. I’m too far. Not fast enough. I won’t get to her in time.
If she hits the ground, if they don’t catch her, she could be seriously injured or even killed.
A human can’t heal like we can.
Pain pounds through my veins as I push myself to move faster, to get to her. Then, her body disappears into the crowd of people, and they cry out. Images of Aurora’s broken and battered body laying splayed out on the grass flash across my mind, urging me to move faster.
I dash across the grass, getting closer and closer, yet it feels like I’m never close enough. Until I’m right behind the people standing beneath the balcony.
Mid-run, I shift back to my human form and shove people aside. Cries come from the people I thrust out of my way, but I ignore them. I have to get to Aurora. She’s all that matters. So, I continue removing any obstacle in my way, whether it’s men or women- my pack or not.
Soft, wailing cries reach my ears, setting my blood on fire.
Aurora
“Move!” I finally roar, and the crowd parts, giving me the perfect view of Aurora. She’s curled up and crying in Joseph’s arms, clutching onto him as he pets her hair to calm her down.
I should be glad, but a red haze coats my vision as my fury grows beyond anything I’ve ever felt. My body itches to shift back to my wolf form to burn off the excess anger, but I lock it in. I can’t help her if I’m in wolf form.
Furious that something like this would happen, that someone might have done this to her, I stalk forward. Joseph stands, holding Aurora close and glaring at Thorne.
“Where were you?!” He shouts, but my eyes are on her.
“Give her to me,” I demand, watching as she gasps and cries into another man’s chest. At the sound of my voice, though, Aurora’s head jerks up and she looks around. The moment our eyes connect, she reaches for me.
“Thorne!” The broken, frightened cry makes my heart ache, but some of the anxiety I felt melts away.
However, when I move to take her from Jospeh, he pulls away, taking her with him.
“Don’t move,” my wolf growls dangerously. The crowd stills at the deep voice of the predator inside me. Even Joseph goes still.
Aurora wiggles in the man’s arms, my vision getting darker as my wolf pushes to surface. The fury filling both of us only grows when he doesn’t release Aurora. She doesn’t want to be held by this mutt.
She wants us.
“Give. Her. To. Me.”
With each growled word, I move closer, until I can touch Aurora’s outstretched hand. A jolt of fear surges through me at her touch, and my wolf growls.
“Mate. Hurt. Scared.”
My wolf’s words slice through my muddled thoughts as I wrap my hand around Aurora’s hand. She whimpers, and I glare at the man who still hasn’t released her. He clearly has a death wish.
“You weren’t here to protect her,” Joseph growls, fighting against the order.
“Joseph, let her go,” I hear someone say from behind me. “You’re not going to win this fight.”
Sanders. He’s warning his brother, and with good reason. If this mutt doesn’t let go of my woman in the next ten seconds, he won’t be alive any longer to argue with me.
“What is your relationship with Aurora?” Joseph asks, bringing another feral growl from me. My wolf surges, and I feel the sharp pain in my gums as my fangs descend.
Joseph’s eyes widen a bit, watching the partial shift that’s forcing its way out of my body. I’m tired of this kid’s attitude and tired of not having Aurora in my arms. Her trembling hand squeezes mind, and I snap.
I let every ounce of my Alpha tone seep into my voice as I say, “Aurora is my woman. Now, give her to me.”
