Aurora’s POV
Thorne’s thumb gently brushes my ankle when he sits in one of the dining table chairs and lifts my leg. I watch as he places my foot on his shoulder, giving him a good view of the bloody claw marks down my calf.
“Shit,” he barks. Blood drips to the floor as he examines the wound. “I’m not sure I’ll be able to fix you up,” he tells me. I nod, realizing that now. I didn’t want to go to the hospital if I could avoid it, but the tight, worried expression on Thorne’s face tells me that’s probably not going to happen.
“I’ll clean it up as best I can, but Doc will have the final say,” Thorne says and looks me right in the eyes. “Alright?”
Again, I nod, unable to say anything as the pain throbs in my leg. The only thing that keeps me from freaking out is his presence and the steady, soft brush of his thumb across my ankle. The tingles battle with the pain, but the pain wins out in the end.
“This is going to hurt,” Thorne warns, and I look up to find him pouring some sort of disinfectant medicine onto a soft cloth. Then, there’s fire burning in my leg, and I sink my teeth into my hand to keep from screaming from the pain.
“I’ll find who did this,” Thorne growls. I squeeze my eyes closed, letting the tears roll down my cheeks and allowing my head to fall back against the cabinet. I can’t hear much of what Thorne says, but soon, my leg goes numb, and I slump back.
Black dots swim in my vision and nausea rolls through my stomach.
“Aurora? Can you hear me?”
A large, warm hand cups my cheek gently, lifting my head.
When I open my eyes, Thorne is inches from my face. His eyes are pinched with worry, the little lines between his brows becoming more pronounced. It’s cute.
“I know it hurts, but I need you to stay awake,” he whispers, nuzzling my nose with his. The touch brings me back a bit, helps clear my mind, and keeps me focused. “Doc will be here soon, and he’ll take care of you.”
“Okay,” I murmur, keeping my eyes on him as he continues to clean my wound. I notice that he keeps as much physical contact with me as possible, which I appreciate. Having him close helps me feel a bit better.
By the time the doctor gets here, I’m in and out of dizzy spells and leaning back against the counter again.
“You are forbidden to tell anyone about what you see here today,” I hear Thorne say as I try to keep the bloody rag to the back of my leg. The bleeding has slowed, but it hasn’t fully stopped yet.
The man must agree to keep his mouth shut because a moment later, Thorne and an older man walk into the kitchen. Immediately, he comes to me and takes the rag from my hand, examining my leg.
He hums and pokes at the claw marks, making me whimper, which in turn makes Thorne snarl.
“You are very lucky, young lady. If these had gone deeper, you would need much more than a few stitches,” the doctor says matter of factly. I wouldn’t say I was lucky, but I’m glad I didn’t lose a leg. “I suggest going to the hospital for the stitches unless you’re alright with me doing it here at the house.”
Thorne and I speak at the same time.
“Do it here.”
“I’ll take her to the hospital.”
“We’re going to the hospital,” Thorne growls, and when I startle, he lowers his head a bit and says, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“I—” a wave of pain makes me whimper, and I can’t argue.
Thorne’s POV
Seeing Aurora in pain is the last straw.
“I’m taking you to the hospital and that’s final,” I tell her, moving around the doctor and stopping in front of Aurora. “I’m not letting you get stitches at home. This will be done properly.”
Without giving her a chance to argue, I lift her into my arms, and this time, other than a small sound of pain, she doesn’t argue. That pleases and worries me. It only proves how bad she feels.
“I’ll drive you,” the pack doctor says, leading us outside to his car. He opens the back door for me and then places his medical bag beside me before hurrying to the front. He drives quickly and efficiently to the closest hospital and stops at the emergency room doors.
The doctor follows us in, after directing a guard to park his car, and leads us to a room. Several nurses join, listening as the doctor spouts off the supplies and medicines that he needs. People scurry around as I lay Aurora on a bed.
“Turn her on her stomach,” Doc says, and I do. Aurora’s death grip on my hand never falters, even when a nurse tries to get into our space.
“You’ll have to leave while we stitch her up,” the nurse says.
“I’ll stay by her side,” I growl. “You can work around me.”
“Alpha Thorne will be staying, Lacy. Now get to work and administer the Lidocaine to numb the area,” Doc orders, and the girl runs off.
Aurora shifts slightly, her eyes finding mine for a moment before they slide closed. Worry fills me, but Doc must notice because he pats my shoulder and smiles warmly.
“She didn’t have a concussion, so it’s alright for her to sleep,” he tells me. Nodding, I move closer to the bed and continue holding her hand as they eventually begin to stitch my woman up. I hate seeing the angry red claw marks. I hate seeing her hurt.
Again, I failed to protect Aurora, just like in the Redwater Pack.
“Alpha, we didn’t find a trace of intruders,” Jace’s voice filters into my mind.
“How? They aren’t ghosts,” I growl, anger rising. “They were so far into our territory, Jace. How the hell did they get there and get away without leaving something behind?”
My Gammas patrol every hour, so there’s usually no chance of someone sneaking onto my land without one of them, or myself, catching them.
“We’re not sure, but I have several men looking into the schedule and checking the borders,” Jace answers. “There were prints that we could track to the end of the driveway, but after that there’s nothing. No scents either because of that damned scent blocker.”
“I’m getting tired of that fucking scent blocker,” I hiss. I understand it was invented to help unmated females through their heats, but more often than not, it’s used for the wrong reasons.
“Has Aurora said anything about who attacked her?” Jace asks.
“No. All she said is that it was two wolves, but there’s no way for her to know who they are.” I sigh and glance at Aurora. “Double the patrols and keep a few men posted near the house in case the intruders come back.”
“Of course, Alpha. Let me know if you need anything.”
