Thorne POV
Aurora climbs in the car warily, her hesitation clear, but she knows she can’t keep walking. She probably thinks the debt collectors may come back if she leaves on her own. However, they saw her with me, and they won’t go against my order for tonight, at least.
Her sweet scent fills the car as she sits down, and glances at me from the corner of her eye. Does she even realize how much danger she was in? One of the collectors was ready to stab her at any moment.
I study the girl- woman- and take note of how she keeps her distance from me and deliberately avoids getting close. It bothers me, but I don’t comment on it. My eyes again scan her body, lingering on the bruises around her neck.
After what she’s been through today, she has a right to her space.
So, I go with a different approach, asking, “Why do you owe money?”
Aurora sighs and clasps her hands tightly together in her lap. Her hesitation again bothers me, but I wait patiently. If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s waiting. As an Alpha, there are many instances where I have to be patient, so I merely sit back and give her the time she needs.
“I had to pay for my sister’s medical bills,” Aurora finally admits. “She has a kidney disease that’s been growing worse lately, so bills are piling up. The hospital threatened to stop treatment if we didn’t pay, so I had to do something.”
“How much?”
She looks up at me now, her eyes watery with unshed tears. Whether it’s from fear or the story about her sister, I’m not sure. Either way, the sight has my wolf growling in anger.
“Ten thousand, and the bills are still coming.”
Unlike my wolf, I don’t feel much from her answer. There are always too many humans like this—some who lie to get money, and some who truly need it, but after getting the money, they become greedy and use the same tricks to deceive others.
Is she like that too? Is her sister truly sick?
It’s not a stretch, saying a human is severely sick. Their weaker forms are more prone to diseases than werewolves.
Suddenly, the entire car lurches as the driver slams on the breaks. Aurora flies forward, colliding with me as I reach out to grab her. Instinctively, I wrap my arms around her to keep her from hitting the floor or the window.
“I’m sorry,” Aurora apologizes, and I tighten my grip on her at the same time she tries to sit up. However, instead of her getting away like she probably planned, we get closer to one another. Her scent grows stronger as she stares up at me.
The mate bond in my chest stirs and images of our night together fill my mind. The desire she usually ignites burns inside me. Last night, with her, had been the best sex I’ve ever experienced. And now, with her in my arms, I want her again.
“A-Alpha Thorne?” She whispers confusedly.
“I’ll help you.”
“What?”
Clearing my throat, I help her sit up, but when she tries to scoot away, I take her chin between my fingers, “I said, I’ll help you. I will help pay off your debt, but in return, you will stay by my side as my mistress.”
Aurora POV
I must have heard him wrong because there’s no way someone like Alpha Thorne would want me to be his mistress. He’s a man of power and wealth. He isn’t a man who lacks women, and I’m just a human.
It’s inconceivable.
Ludicrous.
Ridiculous.
Crazy.
And he still proposed it.
“Am I your mate?” The question is out of my mouth before I know it, like word vomit. Then, I immediately realize how ridiculous I sound. How could it be possible for me to be the mate of an Alpha?
Thorne pauses for a moment before shaking his head, “No, you’re not.”
I don’t know much about werewolves or their customs, but based on Jackson and Thorne’s reactions, I wonder.
“Is this some kind of werewolf custom? To fuck humans before marriage?” I ask, trying not to sound angry. I don’t want to offend him, but I also don’t want him to take advantage of me being a human like Jackson did.
“Don’t compare me to that mutt,” Thorne growls, the rumble so animalistic that I back away a bit.
He continues to stare at me, so I add, “I don’t want to be a werewolf’s sex toy. I don’t care that you’re handsome.”
His eyebrow ticks up at that, and I curse myself for saying that last part because he seems to like that I called him handsome. I try not to blush, but I feel the heat creep up my neck and to my cheeks.
Reaching into his jacket pocket, Thorne takes out a money clip and pulls out a business card. He quickly writes something on the back of it and passes it to me, “I’ll give you time to think about it. This is my number. You can contact me in three days with your answer.”
Not knowing if I should take it or not, I peer up at him. His eyes are sincere, showing no sign of deception, so I take the card, flipping it over to the number on the back.
“Thank you for helping me tonight, but I’ll get out here,” I tell him, bowing slightly. The car pulls to the curb, and I climb out, bowing again to show my thanks.
Instead of going home, I make my way to the hospital where my sister is taking treatment. I have nowhere else to go and when Jackson kicked me out, I planned to stay in her hospital room for as long as I can get away with it.
My phone rings as I walk, and I answer.
“Hi, Mom.”
“Honey, you need to ask Jackson to help pay the debts.”
Confused, I ask, “What? Why would you say that?”
“Debt collectors came to the house and broke down the door,” she says hurriedly. “You need to seek Jackson’s protection.”
“I can’t. We broke up.”
“Then you need to go back to him and ask him to help you out for old time’s sake. Your father’s debt is just too much to pay back right now…”
A man bumps into me, nearly making me drop the phone, and when I look to see who hit me, I suck in a sharp breath. The man glares menacingly at me, making me duck my head and hurry past him.
“Sorry, Mom. I have to go.”
Quickly, I end the call and rush to my sister’s room, my instincts telling me something is wrong. The moment the elevator opens, I run to her room, gasping when I see the tubes she’s usually connected to have been disconnected.
I rush forward, plugging the machine back into the wall. While I’m trying to correct everything, I notice a note on the table by her bed.
“Pay back the full $50,000 within three days.”
