Aurora POV
Panic set in, for my sister and for the amount of money written on the note.
“Nurse!” I call, staring at the tubes and wires connected to my sister. I’m not a nurse so I don’t know if I fixed them or not.
The nurse walks into the room slowly, like she has all the time in the world, “What’s wrong?”
“Can you make sure she’s okay?” I ask, “She was unplugged, and I don’t know if she’s okay.”
The nurse still moves slowly, checking each of the wires with a disinterested air about her. It irritates me, but I keep my mouth shut so I don’t irritate her. I don’t want her to hurt Sophie out of spite.
“Your sister’s condition isn’t great, girl, so I advise you be more careful next time,” the nurse hisses as she works.
Sophie has been in the hospital for a long time, and the werewolf nurses are tired of her. They haven’t said so specifically, but it’s in the looks on their faces, the way they act like they’d rather be doing anything else, and the way they whisper when they think no one is listening.
“I’ll be right back,” I call to her before moving out of the room. I need to find out why the debt has gone up by forty thousand dollars. Just earlier today it was ten thousand. It shouldn’t have gone up so much in just a few hours.
I scan the area as I exit the hospital, looking for anyone who might be a debt collector.
Then, I spot him. The scary man I passed earlier in the hallways. He’s leaning against one of the hospital pillars, watching me like he has nothing better to do. That’s when I know he’s the one who unplugged my sister’s machines. He has to be.
“Why?” I ask, marching over to him. “Why would you do something so dangerous to hurt my sister? She’s innocent in this!”
He merely smirks and pushes off the pillar, “You needed a reminder of how serious we are.”
“I already know that,” I tell him. “I just don’t understand one thing. I’m going to pay, and I’ve asked for more time, but why has my debt jumped up so much?”
“He didn’t tell you?”
He?
“What are you talking about? Who is he?”
“Your little boyfriend,” the man answers. “Jackson received a referral fee when he sent you to us, which you will pay, and on top of that, he helped set you up on our highest interest loan. Over the time you’ve been contracted, you have gained an extra forty thousand.”
It’s like being shot.
Learning that someone you trusted, someone you loved, purposefully screwed you over hurts. Physical pain sparks in my chest, growing more and more painful as the man’s words process.
“Three days, girlie. You have three days,” the man warns before sauntering away. I watch him disappear around a corner, clutching my chest and then staggering back inside. I have to check on Sophie, and I need to figure out how to pay the rest of my debt.
The nurse looks up from the chart when I enter Sophie’s room and walk to her bedside.
“How is she?”
“Like I said, not good.”
Before I can ask anymore questions, the nurse walks out of the room and leaves me and Sophie alone. She’s sleeping, which is good, because I’d rather her not see the tears pooling in my eyes or running down my cheeks.
Sophie isn’t awake very often. Her treatments are exhausting and drain all her energy, but they’re supposed to help her get better. Now that I’ve used the loan to pay for her bills, she can get better.
Is the cost worth it?
Yes.
Any way I look at it, Sophie is my little sister. I love her more than most things in this world and protecting her is part of my duty as a sister. So as I weigh my dignity against Sophie’s life, I realize she’s worth it. I’ll do anything to save my sister, which is why I find myself staring at Thorne’s business card out of my pocket and the number written on the back.
I dial the number, waiting as it rings.
“Aurora, I wasn’t expecting your call so soon.”
Even the sound of his voice sends a shiver of awareness down my spine.
“I agree to be your mistress,” I murmur, staring at my sister’s sleeping form. “But I still have some questions and thing we need to clarify.”
He hums then responds, “You can ask any questions directly. I’ll have someone come pick you up.”
After saying goodbye to my sister, I make my way to the nurse’s station, and as I approach, my sister’s nurse sighs.
“I have to leave, but could you take extra care of my sister, please? Make sure she’s okay after what happened earlier?”
The woman sighs again and nods, “Yeah, sure.” Then, she goes back to talking with the other nurses, and she’s much more enthusiastic.
“Alpha Thorne just broke up with Annia, and now it looks like he’s dating Sarina from—”
“Not just dating,” one of the nurses says, “I think they’re planning a marriage since Sarina is the daughter of Alpha Rainer.”
“Oh, she’s so lucky. I would love to date Alpha Thorne. He’s the definition of tall, dark, and handsome.”
Rolling my eyes, I walk away from the nurses, angry and irritated that they’re more interested in gossiping than their jobs.
“The Beta’s car is out front!” A nurse cries excitedly as she and some other run past. “Let’s hurry and serve him!”
Though, when the handsome man steps out of the car, he doesn’t pay attention to the nurses. He scans the area before his gaze lands on me.
“Perfect age, beautiful, human girl—must be you.”
Heat fills my cheeks as I follow him to the car and climb in. I ignore the stares from the nurses who gasp and glare at me. I don’t miss the curious glances from the Beta either, as he pulls away from the curb.
The house in front of me is huge and very nice.
“Is this Thorne’s house?”
The Beta laughs and shakes his head, “No. Alpha Thorne’s home is a hundred times more luxurious than this.” He pushes the door open then looks at me, “Go on inside and get ready. Thorne will be here soon.”
Taking a deep breath, I step in. If I’m going to do this, I can’t back down. I’ve already agreed to be his mistress, and besides, we’ve already slept together. It shouldn’t be that bad, right?
The Beta leaves me to myself, and soon, I find a bedroom with an attached bathroom that practically calls my name. The sudden feeling of being covered in filth hits me when I remember I haven’t showered today. I poke my head out of the bathroom and find myself alone, so I decide to take this time to clean myself up a bit.
I’m sure Thorne wouldn’t appreciate me being so dirty.
Ignoring the fact that I don’t have any clothes to change into, I jump int the shower and sigh as the hot water flows over my body. I let it burn away the pain and filth from the day while I scrub myself down.
When I get out, I grab one of the fluffy black towels and wrap it around myself. I’m sure there are some extra clothes in the bedroom closet, so I push the bathroom door open and step out.
“Th-Thorne,” I stammer, freezing as he looks up from the phone in his hand. Heated eyes rake over my body, and I clutch the towel tighter around myself.
