“Is everyone in agreement?” I yelled over the crowd.
There was a quiet pause before a sporadic acknowledgement. I told everyone to disperse and leave the area. To go home before I called guards and started making arrests.
I’d negotiated a meeting with one of the protesters and the company owner. There was apparently an issue with the working conditions in the warehouse that had caused the protesters. I hung back to speak further with the owner after everyone had gone.
He took us to his office looking quite disheveled and distraught.
“Okay, Warren, what the hell happened?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “Yes, there was an accident about two weeks ago. Some kid fell while the loading crane was transferring a pallet into the warehouse. He crushed his hand but nothing permanent.”
“They claimed it was from negligence,” I said.
Warren sighed. “On the boys side,” he said. “He wasn’t wearing his safety harness. And I will admit the bar should have held up better, but it wouldn’t have broken had he been wearing the harness. His full weight wouldn’t have landed on it.” He rubbed his forehead. “Alpha, I don’t cut corners. I have passed every inspection. The last one was just two months ago.”
“Hmm…” I thought. “I believe you. And we’ll look into it and bring that proof to the meeting. But it may be time to improve the requirements. I’ll get a team to review the current safety standards and have a report ready by the negotiation.”
“Thank you, Alpha,” Warren said.
“I have to say, this whole thing has gone a lot easier than I expected,” I stated, as we started to make our way toward the door. “It looks like I won’t be home that late after all.”
“I’m sure our new Luna will appreciate that,” Warren said with a grin. “We were all happy to hear that you finally found her, sir.”
“As was I,” I replied. “But it does make it hard to want to do my job sometimes. Like getting dragged away from her just to subdue a mob,” I chided him.
He shook his head. “I’ve got to be honest, Alpha, I was just as surprised as you were,” he said. “This came completely out of nowhere for me.”
Something twisted in my gut when he said that. Rhonen perked up, sharing my ominous suspicions.
“What do you mean?” I pressed.
“Well, not four days ago, the whole company got together and treated me to a little office celebration for my birthday,” he said. “It wasn’t my idea. It’s never my idea, and yet, they set it all up without me even realizing. It just seems strange to do that if you’re that angry with your employer.”
The knot in my gut grew. Something didn’t feel right.
“That is strange,” Jaden expressed. “But people can get riled up on a dime sometimes.”
“Yes, they can,” I said. “When influenced.” I turned to Warren. “Have you had any knew faces hanging around the last few days? Maybe a new employee?”
Warren thought for a moment. “Yeah, yeah, there is a new guy,” I said. “I needed the extra hand with Trevor still out. He’s a strange fellow though. Definitely not from around her.”
Something clicked inside me. My gut twisted so hard I thought I would puke.
I was out of his office and across the parking lot in record time. Jaden barely managed to get in the truck before I was pealing out of the space and speeding toward the main roads.
“What the hell is going on?” he demaned.
“It was a setup to get me out of the city. They’re coming for Sutton.”
“Shit…” Jaden cursed under his breath. “How do you…”
“I just know,” I snapped, grabbing my phone to dial her number.
She didn’t pick up. I kept trying to reach her as I sped towards home. We were half-way home when pain radiated through my body. I jerked the wheel as I gripped my head. Panic immediately took over.
Sutton.
“Get someone on the fucking phone,” I bellowed to Jaden.
He started dialing furiously. No one was answering. I was losing my fucking mind with every passing second. Finally someone picked up. Putting it on speaker, I heard Tanjie’s panicked voice on the line.
“What the fuck happened,” I roared. “Where is Sutton?”
“A-A-Alpha, she was attacked,” Tanjie cried. “She’s alive. An ambulance is on the way.”
She continued to talk but I couldn’t hear anything anymore. Rhonen was practically rabid in my mind. I had the pedal pushed down as far as it would go. All I could focus on was the road and the searing pain Sutton was experiencing.
And I wasn’t fucking there. I wasn’t there to protect her. To protect…
Shit.
“Jack?” I managed to blurt out.
“He’s fine,” Jaden said. I hadn’t even realized he had hung up. “Tanjie said he wasn’t hurt. Sutton kept him safe. She protected him.”
The whirlwind of emotions was too much. I felt like my heart was about to come out of my chest. I couldn’t get to her fast enough. Rhonen was a beacon of rage and desperation. It didn’t matter that I was driving. He was practically throwing himself against the barrier that kept us from shifting.
I don’t know how long it actually took to pull into the hospital parking lot. I screeched to a halt at the emergency entrance. The moment my feet hit the ground, Rhonen burst through. He immediately caught Sutton’s scent and charged inside. Anyone in our path jumped out of the way.
We were getting closer. We could smell her just behind a door up ahead. We were almost there when something smashed into us from above, pinning us to the ground. Rhonen snarled and snapped at whoever was holding us, fighting against their grip.
“Rhonen,” Jaden yelled, “get a fucking grip. You can’t go in there like this.”
The weight on us increased. I started to realize that it wasn’t just Jaden restraining us. From what I could tell, there were five people holding us down. I fought Rhonen for control, convincing him his behavior was only keeping us from our mate, until he relented and I shifted back. Tanjie moved in front of me, blocking my view of the doctors and nurses treating Sutton.
“She stable,” she urged. “They’re stitching her up right now. You can’t go in there like this, Alpha.”
“She right,” Jaden said. “She’s safe, Lucas. She’s going to be okay but you need to get control of yourself.”
Easy for him to say. The love of his life wasn’t laying on an table in a hospital. Then I saw Jack. Standing outside the door, staring in at Sutton. The color was completely gone from his face. It made the patches of blood more prominent.
Sutton’s blood. Not his.
I forced myself to settle. Yanking free, I crossed the hall and pulled him into an embrace.
