I accepted that I couldn’t go into the operating room. Settling with demanding to know what the hell happened and how. No one knew where the attacker had come from or who he was. They only remembered hearing Sutton scream. They rushed to her aid to find the stranger standing over her as she shielded Jack beneath her.
I grappled with the fact that Sutton had sacrificed herself for Jack. It made the situation harder to deal with. It didn’t help that I had to fight the urge to take it out on everyone there. To yell and scream about how stupid they were and how could they let this happen. But I knew it wasn’t their fault. They couldn’t have had any idea that Sutton was in any kind of danger.
That was my job. And I failed.
Rhonen paced heavily in my mind. The doctor finally stepped away from Sutton and started heading toward us. Jaden’s hand on my shoulder kept me from storming in.
“Alpha Lucas,” the doctor said as he walked out the door, “Luna Sutton is doing just fine.” Relief washed through me, but I wouldn’t be able to relax until I was with her. “She’s got some bumps and bruises and a mild concussion. The most concerning wounds were the gashes along her back. They are mostly superficial but a few went quite deep. Deep enough to cause a kidney laceration. However, we got her all stitched up with no signs of internal bleeding. She’s started healing already. So I suspect she’ll make a full recovery in no time.”
“Is she awake?”
“Not yet,” he said. “The sedation won’t wear off for a little while longer, but you can sit with her while we prepare to transport her to a room. She’ll need to stay overnight for observation.”
I didn’t wait for any follow-up. I pushed past him, going straight to Sutton. There was a nurse bandaging her back while another worked to get a hospital gown over her arms. I moved to take the gown from her, stepping in to take over the task.
I needed to touch her. To feel her heart beating. I threaded one arm into the gown. The nurse went around and helped to lift her so I could get the other arm in. I finished getting her covered up, adjusting all the tubes, and settled her back down before the nurses left us. I gripped her hand while brushing her hair away from her face.
“I’m here, princess,” I whispered. “I’m not going anywhere again.”
It wasn’t long until an orderly came to move her from the emergency department to a private room. Jack was right on our heels as we transported her across the building. I tried to get Jaden to take him home. Jack refused, sticking to my side. Once we arrived in the room and she situated, I pulled a chair up to the edge of the bed. I had no intention of leaving that spot until she woke up. Nothing mattered but seeing those beautiful eyes of hers.
“Are we sure the protest was a setup?” Jaden asked from the door. “It could have just been an opportunity.”
“It was a setup,” I said. “But we should investigate. I want everyone involved found. Where’s the bastard who did this?”
Jaden hesitated. “They just took him to lock up,” he said. “He had to be patched up.”
I stiffened. Rhonen’s hackles raised with a snarl. “He was here?”
“Now he’s not,” Jaden answered. “You’ll have your chance to question him, Lucas. Right now, you need to be with Sutton.”
I didn’t respond. There was nothing else to say. He was right. And I would find out who put him up to this. Right before I ripped his throat out. Jaden’s phone started ringing.
“It’s Tarrah,” he said. “I should deal with this.”
He left the room, leaving me, Sutton, and Jack. I held her hand, running my thumb up and down her skin.
“I’m sorry, Uncle Lucas,” Jack spoke quietly. “It’s all my fault.”
“No,” I told him. “It’s not, buddy. It’s not your fault at all.”
“But I…”
“No, Jack,” I assured him. “You did nothing wrong.”
He fell silent again.
All we could do was wait. Jack fought to stay awake but eventually, he fell asleep in his chair. I was about to move him over to the recliner when Sutton stirred. She groaned softly as her eyes fluttered open.
“Hey, princess,” I greeted her, kissing her fingers. “I’m here.”
She started to smile gently until she looked around the room. Realization set in and I felt her panic rush through our bond.
“Jack…?” she cried hoarsely, trying to sit up. The movement making her hiss from the pain.
“He’s fine,” I assured her, gently pushing her down, encouraging her not to move. “He’s over there. Poor kid just fell asleep.”
“He’s okay?” she questioned. “He wasn’t hurt?”
“No, baby, you kept him safe,” I told her.
She swallowed. I felt her relief as she squeezed my hand.
“I didn’t see his face,” she said. “His scent was strange but only a little. I don’t know why.”
“Shh,” I hushed her. “We got him, Sutton. He didn’t get away. We’ll get to the bottom of this. I promise you. All I want you to worry about is getting well enough to go home.”
“Uncle Lucas…”
I looked over to see Jack sitting on the edge of his seat.
“She’s awake,” I told him. “You can come talk to her.”
He looked at Sutton and back at me, unsure of what to do. He almost looked scared. Finally, he shook his head. I knew he had gone through a lot tonight, but I was still glad that Sutton’s back was to him.
“Will she be okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, kiddo,” I told him. “She’ll be okay.”
