Max led me into the house where Jack was waiting for us.
“What’s going on?” I asked Max.
“Take Jack and go up the back stairs,” he instructed, cutting off throughout the house. “Keep lights off and stay away from the windows.”
I put an arm around Jack’s shoulder and did as we were told. I took him up to our bedroom and into the bathroom. The walk-in closet didn’t have any windows, so I tucked him inside there. I left the door cracked and mind-linked Max.
‘Who is it?’ I asked. ‘What’s happening?’
‘The perimeter guards caught several foreign scents,’ he replied. ‘We suspect it’s likely a scouting party.’
‘Even if they don’t see us, our scent is all over the property,’ I pointed out.
‘I’m already on it,’ Max replied.
I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I trusted that he had a plan. My heart was racing. I was sitting on the floor looking through the crack, trying to listen to what was going on. The house was eerily quiet. I could barely make out subtle creaks and clicks over the sound of my heart beating. Suddenly, I felt Jack take my hand.
I squeezed it and gave him a gentle smile. “It’s okay, bud,” I told him before reaching back out to Max. ‘What’s happening?’
‘They’re still tracking the scents,’ he told me. ‘It looks like they got into a vehicle but we’re doing two more searches to ensure the area is clear. I’ll let you know when it’s safe to come down. Just stay away from the windows.’
‘Okay,’ I replied.
We waited quietly a while longer. Nova was still pacing in my head, but I was less on edge knowing there wasn’t a direct threat outside our door at this moment. Still, I was getting frustrated with this. This wasn’t going to end until Alpha Anders either got what he wanted or was stopped for good.
‘He’d have to die to stop him,’ Nova expressed.
I sighed. ‘Most likely,’ I agreed. ‘But maybe not. Maybe we’re just being too cautious about all of this.’
‘I can’t say I disagree,’ Nova replied.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps in the hallway. It wasn’t Max. I’d gotten to the point I could sense if he was close. I squeezed Jack’s hand and pulled the door closed just a little bit more. My heart was racing faster.
“Luna Sutton,” Soloman’s voice echoed from the bedroom. “It’s safe to come out now.”
‘All clear, Luna,’ Max confirmed.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I pushed off the floor. Leaving the closet and bathroom, Soloman was waiting at the bedroom door. He gave me a reassuring look. I returned it with a stiff smile. We headed back downstairs and met Max in the kitchen. There was a strange smell emanating from him. I assumed it had to do with whatever he did to get rid of our scents. And had his face buried in a laptop on the kitchen counter.
“I’m going over the security footage of the street,” he informed me. “We may be able to catch the vehicle they’re in.”
My phone buzzed in my pocket. Taking it out, I checked the screen.
It was Lucas.
“Hello,” I answered.
“I’m on my way, Sutton,” he rushed.
“No, Lucas,” I told him. “Just wait till dark like we planned. They don’t know I’m here. If you come now, you may blow our cover.”
“You’re not staying there anymore, so it doesn’t matter,” Lucas argued. “The manor has clearly been compromised. We’ll move you to a new safehouse.”
“No,” I snapped, stamping my foot and drawing the attention of everyone in the room.
“Sutton…”
“I’m not doing this anymore, Lucas,” I said. “I can’t do this anymore. I’m done hiding.”
Lucas growled in frustration on the other end of line. He followed it with a heavy sigh.
“I’ll be there in an hour,” he said before hanging up.
“He’ll get over it, Luna,” Max said. “He’s just worried about you.
“I know,” I replied. “And I’m worried too, but this isn’t the answer. I’ve spent too much of my life looking over my shoulder. I’m going to face whatever happens next head-on.”
I left the kitchen and went back out to the backyard for some air. Closing my eyes, I took a few deep breaths to steady my nerves. Lifting my head to feel the sun on my face.
‘We can do this, Sutton,’ Nova encouraged. ‘It’s time to become who we were meant to be.’
‘We have no idea who that is, Nova,’ I stated. ‘We’re grasping at straws.’
‘Yes, you do,’ she retorted. ‘You feel it in your bones, Sutton.’
I knew that if I was going to even entertain the idea of using my identity to end this conflict, I had to be ready to face the reality that came with it. But I wasn’t sure I could do that when I wasn’t ready to accept it as the truth yet. Especially if Lucas’ fears of losing each other had merit. I was mulling things over when someone came up beside me.
“Your mother was just as stubborn and willful,” Soloman said fondly.
I gave him a side-eyed look before returning to my basking.
“We still don’t know for sure that Leanetta was my mother,” I said.
“Perhaps, but the implications are strong,” he said. “Strong enough to use in your favor.”
“Or get me into even more trouble,” I stated.
Soloman sighed. “I’m afraid that may come about whether you face it or not, my dear,” he replied. “And I think you know that. It’s why you’re working out some kind of plan.”
Nova chuckled in the back of my head. ‘He’s good.’
“I’m not ready to admit any relations to the royal family, distant or otherwise,” I said. “But if my resemblance is so uncanny, maybe we could use that to… curry favor with some of the more influential powers of the realm. With full transparency, of course.”
A broad smile crossed Soloman’s face. “That could be possible,” he said. “But you would need help arranging such an opportunity.”
“Most definitely,” I scoffed. “Because I wouldn’t have any idea where to even start.”
Soloman took my hand and patted it affectionately.
“Leave that to me, Luna,” he insisted. “Leave that to me.”
