We made it back to the packhouse and I took Sutton and Jack straight up to our apartment. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by yet another visitor.
“Grandma Lara,” Jack said as they met with an embrace. “You made it.”
“I’m so sorry it took me so long, my boy,” Aunt Lara replied. “Things have been busy at the farm. We have two new foals to look after.”
“We’re just glad you could come at all, Aunt Lara,” I said, giving her a hug.
She moved to hug Sutton next.
“I hear you’ve had an interesting time settling in, my darling girl,” she said as she looked Sutton up and down. “But you don’t look any worse for it. Still as stunning as ever.”
“As do you, Aunt Lara,” Sutton replied.
“Oh, you’re too sweet,” she replied with a blush. “Well, I would love to catch up on all the drama that has been going on since you left, but I suspect you two would like some time alone. After all, I’m really here to see my grandson. So, why don’t I take Jack to get settled in my rooms for the evening.”
“Can’t I stay here?” Jack asked.
“I think you can spend some time with your grandmother, buddy,” I said. “You’ll be just downstairs in the guest wing. We’ll see each other tomorrow. I promise.”
“Besides, I’ve already arranged for a movie and popcorn tonight,” Aunt Lara said. “So, come on. Let’s get you settled.”
I watched Jack and Aunt Lara leave. As soon as the elevator doors shut, I pulled Sutton towards me. My lips slamming into hers. My fingers burying in her silky hair. My tongue sought hers, needing her taste like a drug. I started moving, pushing her until the back of her thighs hit the couch.
“Goddess, I’ve missed you,” I rasped.
“I missed you, too,” Sutton replied.
I moved along her jaw with my lips, down to her neck. Her hands fisted my shirt as my teeth grazed her mark. I tugged at the buttons of her shirt and felt it… hesitation. It was subtle but there. She’d pulled away as my hand grazed her skin.
I froze. Her heart rate increased. Rhonen’s hackles raised.
“Sutton…” I pulled back. “What’s wrong?”
She pulled her lip between her teeth and looked away. There was a distance in our bond. One I’d never expected to feel. I wasn’t about to let her get away with that. I’d just gone through two days of hell without her. Now she was pulling even further away from me. I grabbed her chin, forcing her to meet my eyes.
“Talk to me, Sutton,” I demanded. “What did I do?”
I felt anger spike through our connect and she pushed me away.
“You left me, Lucas,” she blurted out.
“Excuse me?” I retorted. “The fuck I did…”
“Yes, you did,” she snapped. “You packed me up, shipped me off, and hid me away without any discussion about it.”
“I was keeping you safe, Sutton. Someone tried to kill you,” I bellowed.
“Exactly, ME, they tried to kill Me. They hurt ME,” she argued back. “It’s my life and I didn’t get a say about it.” She let out a frustrated grunt as she pushed her fingers through her hair, turning away from me. “I know I should have said something. I should have made you give me time to think about what I wanted to do. That’s on me, too. But you, of all people, know how I feel about being isolated.”
Her words hit like a punch to the gut. “Sutton…”
“It didn’t help that you were pulling away from me,” she continued. “I felt it, Lucas. I tried to ignore it. I did. I spent the last two days refusing to think about because if I did, I would spiral. Then you didn’t even bother to come back last night. And I know you were dealing with things here but still, I know what I felt. You were blocking me out. You’re starting to realize just how much of a liability I am.”
A growl reverberated off the walls as I closed the distance between us. My hands going to her face, pushing her against the wall as I pinned her with my body.
“Princess, that is the furthest thing from the fucking truth,” I rumbled.
My mouth claimed hers again, fully intent on showing her exactly how I felt about her. Need and desperation taking over my body as I tugged and tore at clothing. Within seconds, she was crying out as I buried deep inside her. Still pinned to the wall with her legs around my waist.
I plowed into her, pushing her toward the climax we both so frantically needed right then. It didn’t take long until we were both falling into that sweet abyss together.
I managed to stumble to the couch without hurting her, falling into the cushions completely spent. I waited for our breathing to settle. My hands trailing up and down her back, careful not to disturb the areas that were still healing.
“I wasn’t pulling away from you, princess,” I said softly. “I admit the distance you felt was real, but it wasn’t what you think.”
She pushed off my chest, lifting her head to look at me expectantly. Waiting for me to explain myself. I sighed heavily, reaching up to run my fingers through her hair for comfort.
“After you were attacked, I needed to become someone I don’t like being,” I told her. “Someone I wasn’t ready for you to see yet.”
“The man who attacked us…”
I nodded. “I couldn’t let him get off easy,” I stated. “I couldn’t let Anders get away sending him. The reputation you had heard about before you came here was well-earned, princess. It has saved my people more than once in the past. And I will use it to protect you whenever necessary. But that doesn’t mean I’m proud of it. Or that I want you to see that part of me.”
Sutton leaned in and kissed me gently.
“Lucas, I love you,” she told me. “That means every part of you. No matter what.”
