I was back to work the next morning. With a contingency of guards, of course. Lucas was insistent on making sure I was never left alone. I didn’t mind. I was being introduced to more pack members and felt like I was working alongside them. Well… that they were working alongside me, I suppose. Either way, I was actually starting to feel like I was part of the pack.
The plan was to clear around two acres worth of land for the gardens. Most of that had been completed and we were already in the last stretch. The further we got, the more excited Tanjie and I became as we uncovered more remnants of the original structures from the Alpha Baron. There were stone walls, benches, planters, even the remains of sculptures were being excavated from the grounds.
“Luna…”
I looked up from cleaning the fountain and saw Tanjie waving me over. Getting to my feet, I crossed the field and met Tanjie at the picnic tables. Dropping a cardboard box, she pulled out a folder.
“I finally got the copies of the sketches from the museum,” she said, opening the folder to pull out images. “We’ve got something of a blueprint now. These should help us decide how much we want to preserve and rebuild. We know the section of the west wall we’ve uncovered is in decent shape.”
“And the fountain is salvageable,” I commented.
“Indeed,” she agreed. “The next question will be how true to the original plans we want to go or if we want to highlight those features and create something new around them.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m leaning either direction just yet,” I admitted. “We’ve found a lot, but is it really enough to make the reconstruction worth it? If so, does that risk the integrity of the ruins?”
“Exactly,” Tanjie agreed. “So, we’ve still got a lot of decisions to make. Now, that’s not a huge deal seeing as we still don’t have a firm deadline. Unless you’ve made a decision on that front finally?”
“No, not yet,” I replied catching the hint. “Until this issue with the Dawn Stalkers and the border attacks is dealt with, Alpha Lucas doesn’t want to set a date for the Luna ceremony. Such a major gathering would be too much of a temptation. And I have to admit, I agree with him.”
Tanjie nodded. “We are all okay with being safe over sorry. Especially with our new Luna.”
I gave her a grateful smile and noticed Motty coming over.
“Luna, it’s almost two o’clock,” she informed me. “You wanted me to remind you about your guests this evening.”
“Yes, of course,” I replied. “Thanks, Motty. I’ll head up with you.”
I wished I could have worked a bit longer but I needed to shower and clean up before Tarrah and the others came over. So, I finished up with Tanjie and said my quick goodbyes before joining Motty for the trek back up to the Alpha’s suite. We had just come up to the rear entrance when we ran into Ambassador Soloman.
“Luna Sutton, this is fortuitous,” he greeted. “I didn’t think I would get to see you before I left.”
My brow furrowed. “Where are you off to?”
“I will be returning to the capital,” he informed me. “It’s time I checked in with the Royal Council. But I’m sure we will be seeing each other again soon enough.”
“I hope so,” I replied. “And I hope you have safe travels.”
“Thank you, Luna. If you need anything, I’ll still be a phone call away,” Soloman insisted before continuing on his way.
Motty and I headed inside, my bodyguards lingering at a safe distance without being overbearing. I was worried I would feel awkward with them following me around, but the sense of security they brought quickly removed that concern.
“How often does the ambassador have to go to the capital to speak with the Council?” Motty asked out of the blue.
“Um… I don’t know,” I replied. “I didn’t think it was that often from what I gathered. He is usually able to get by with communicating from here.”
“So, is he returning because of the attacks?” she asked. “Do you think he’s going to have the Royal Council step in to handle the conflict?”
“I think he’s just planning on informing them of the extent of the issue for now,” I said. “Alpha Renward said the Dawn Stalkers have backed off on their encroachment into his lands. So, it appears that the hostilities are only against the Ironpaw Pack now. Lucas believes they would continue to let us address the problem ourselves for now.”
“So, they wouldn’t interfere unless more packs got involved?”
“We believe so,” I said.
“What… what about the other stuff?” Motty questioned. “At the conclave… the other Alphas were worried about some enterprise or whatever that Alpha Anders was building in his territory. Do you think Ambassador Soloman will tell the Council about that? Maybe have them check into it further?”
“That I’m not sure about,” I said. “It’s already going to be a task to get them to take our situation seriously once the reason behind the Dawn Stalker aggression is revealed. After all, the loss of a single pack member isn’t something to start a war over. It’s likely the Council will attribute the hostilities to an Alpha’s wounded pride and think things will all blow over soon enough.”
“Do you think that’s what will happen?” Motty pressed. “Do you really think he’ll just move on and forget about you? I mean, like you said, there’s no reason to start a war when he has no real claim over you.”
“I’d like to think that’s how this will all end, but I don’t know,” I admitted. “Something tells me Alpha Anders’ efforts are just beginning.”
