It took us longer than we planned to get ready but neither of us was actually complaining. It was the most time we’d gotten to spend together, just the two of us since we had come to the packhouse. I hadn’t realized how frustrating it had been to have us constantly going in opposite directions until today. And don’t get me wrong, I was grateful for the chance to get closer to Jack. He meant so much to Lucas and would always be a big part of his life. But it was nice to not have to worry about doing something inappropriate in front of him.
Even when Lucas took me out to lunch, we still seemed to be in our little bubble. I couldn’t remember a time I’d ever felt so happy and content. Knowing where we were going after our meal, I tried to hold onto that feeling as strongly as possible.
As we left the café, Lucas opened the truck door for me. I moved to get in but he grabbed my arm to stop me. Stepping in close, he dropped his face to my neck and took a deep breath. As if he was breathing in my scent. When he pulled away, I saw Rhonen flash in his eyes. It was by no means a foreign reaction, but it did seem like a strange place to have it.
“Is something wrong?”
The corner of his mouth twitched upward. His finger hooked my chin and he pulled me in for a brief kiss.
“Not in the least,” his deep voice rumbled. “We’ll have to talk when we get home later.”
My brow furrowed in confusion but before I could press him further, he ushered me into the truck. Slapping my ass as he did so.
It was late afternoon when Lucas pulled into the parking lot of an office building across town. It wasn’t a huge building, only three floors, but it was very modern. There was a spot near the entrance reserved for the Alpha that Lucas pulled into. I had a feeling many of the parking lots in the city had one of those.
Getting out of the truck, Lucas hurried around to open my door. Taking his hand, I followed him toward the entrance. Lucas pressed a button below a monitor next to the door. It buzzed and lit up a moment later, a young gentleman’s face appearing on the screen.
“Alpha Lucas,” the man greeted. “This is an unexpected visit. I’ll buzz you right in.”
The door sounded and clicked, letting us know it was unlocked. Lucas guided me inside. We approached a reception desk where the man from the monitor stood waiting.
“Thank you, Wendell,” Lucas said. “I suppose Ned forgot to inform you I would be coming to see him today.”
Wendell rolled his eyes. “Of course he did,” he replied. “But who’s surprised? Go on up, Alpha. I assume you have your keycard?”
Lucas lifted a plain white card in response.
“It’s wonderful to see you, Luna Sutton,” Wendell stated as Lucas led me away.
We entered an elevator and Lucas tapped the keycard on a pad in the wall panel. A section lit up and he performed the same actions it took to get to our floor at the packhouse. The elevator began moving.
“I’m assuming this Ned person is the one who installed the security in the packhouse,” I commented.
“He created it,” Lucas confirmed. “Ned is a bit of a genius. Oh, fair warning — he’s also a bit… eccentric.”
The door dinged as we reached the third floor, opening to a large space filled with tables and workbenches covered with monitors, wires, computer chips, and all other manner of odds and ends involving any form of technology as far as I could tell. I could hear someone moving around near the back of the room. There seemed to be a lot of grunting and mumbling going on. As we got closer, a bright spark of electricity flashed between the shelves and a loud curse followed after it.
“Ned,” Lucas called out.
I could just make out a figure jumping in surprise at his voice. A clatter echoed off the walls as items fell to the floor. The smell of burning mingled with the scent of whoever was back there. A moment later, a head popped out from around a tall workbench.
“Alpha Lucas,” Ned stated, his eyes darting between the two of us. Brushing off his soiled white lab coat, he stepped out into the aisle. “This… this must be the mate.” He said waving a finger at me absently. “Alpha Lucas didn’t tell me he was bringing his mate.”
The smell of whatever had sparked finally dissipated enough that I caught something strange about Ned’s scent. Nova’s ears perked up and she came forward in my consciousness.
‘Human,’ she stated curiously.
‘He’s a…’ I linked Lucas in shock.
“Ned, this is Luna Sutton,” Lucas introduced.
“Pleased,” Ned muttered with a nod.
He stood hunched over, his hands constantly moving as they fiddled with each other. His hair stuck out in odd directions and there was black soot on his face. It was hard to tell by his disheveled appearance but if you looked closely, you could tell he was young. Maybe even around my age or younger.
“Now, what is it you have brought me, Alpha?” he asked, getting straight to business.
Lucas removed the cell phone from his pocket and presented it to Ned. “Can you crack into this?”
Ned took the device. Pulling a pair of glasses from his breast pocket he put them on. Only for his hunched shoulders to fall even further when he noticed they were cracked. I stifled a laugh when he threw them over his head with a grunt. Reaching around the shelves, he felt around, producing another pair of glasses a moment later.
“Of course I can crack it,” he said, pushing past us. “That’s not really what you want. So, the question I suppose I should be asking is what are you looking for on this device?”
“A traitor.”
