When I woke up the next morning, I briefly thought Lucas had set me up the night before when he said my attendance was contingent on being able to move. I thought I had been sore yesterday but this morning, I found myself having to literally roll out of bed. Luckily, after some teasing from Nova and a very long hot shower, I was able to get a full range of motion if I needed to.
I was staring at my hairbrush on the bathroom counter. I wondered if I could make my arms work long enough to get the tangles out when Lucas walked in. I grabbed the brush quickly and started pulling it through the ends of my hair. Lucas came up beside me and crossed his arms over his chest.
“Lift your arms,” he stated.
“Excuse me?” I replied, narrowing my eyes at him.
“Lift… your… arms,” he repeated. “Come on. Over your head.”
I returned my brush to the counter with a huff and shoved my arms into the air. I managed not to wince, maintaining my annoyed expression through the ridiculous demonstration.
“There,” I said, letting them drop back to my sides. “Happy?”
He shook his head as he failed to suppress a grin. Picking up my brush, he stepped behind me. He began to brush my wet, tangled hair, and my shoulders relaxed. My annoyance slipping away. It still felt nice being taken care of, even if I was worried he would leave me behind. But maybe it was better that I didn’t go. Being this stiff did slow my reaction time significantly. Perhaps it would be too dangerous.
Lucas kissed the top of my head as he finished. After putting my brush away, he opened the bottom drawer of the vanity and set a bottle of medication by the sink.
“These will help,” he said. “I’m not going to leave you behind, baby. You won’t have to push yourself today, so you’ll have time to recover.”
“You think so?” I asked sadly.
“I do,” he said. He sighed as his expression became more serious. “Your safety is my first priority, Sutton. Always. But I know how hard you’ve worked for this. I know how much it’s meant you — to both of us — that we’ve done this together. The last thing I want to do is take that from you, princess.”
I turned and wrapped my arms around his waist, pressing my face to his chest. I meant more than I could say that he understood. I was still getting to know myself as much as he was. I had just started to like who I was again. Being locked away or left behind just made me feel like I used to. More and more I was realizing I couldn’t go back to that life.
“You know I feel that way too,” I told him. “Knowing that you’re okay is all that matters to me. I don’t want to be left wondering if you’re coming back.”
He hooked my chin, lifting my face so he could kiss me. Long and deep and meaningfully. Taking my breath away like only he could. By the time we pulled apart, I thought I might need another shower.
“We need to get moving,” he said with heavy disappointment. “We shouldn’t keep everyone waiting.”
A few hours later, we pulled into the driveway of a one-story house. Lucas had said we wouldn’t be staying with his aunt and uncle this time. He didn’t want to risk anyone seeing us in the area. He didn’t even drive his truck since it was too recognizable. But this house belonged to a cousin who usually used it as a rental property. Fortunately, it was empty at the moment.
Pulling into the garage, he made sure the door was closed before we started to get out. Max had ridden with us. Along with another warrior I had just met. His name was Tarvyn and he seemed nice enough. He was pretty quiet.
“The others are going to go ahead to the site,” Max said as he started to unload. “Make sure the access road is still usable. You sure that cabin is still there?”
“I can’t say what shape it’s in,” Lucas replied. “But the cabin doesn’t really matter. It’s the location that’s ideal.”
“How far away are we from this place we’re meeting at?” I asked, lifting my own bag onto my shoulder.
“It’s about twenty minutes as the wolf runs,” Lucas told me. “We’ll be on foot on the way there.”
“On foot?”
“A vehicle will spook our contact. We’re supposed to be sneaking over the border, remember,” he replied. We would have to be on foot.”
Lucas led me to one of three bedrooms at the far side of the house. There were a few bare furnishings and what was there was covered in sheets. But there was a bed. So we at least wouldn’t have to sleep on the floor. I dropped my bag at the foot of the bed with a heavy breath.
“You sure you’re up for this, babe?” Lucas asked.
I gave him a look.
“Just checking,” he said with a grin. “Leave your stuff here. You’re coming with us to stake out the meeting site.”
