                    : Lucas
Two wolves leapt from the bed of the truck. I moved to put Sutton behind me, blocking any direct path. Stepping back as they landed across from us, snarling with teeth bared. I shook my head in warning, knowing the two wouldn’t stand a chance if they were stupid enough to attack. Then three more wolves stepped out from the shadows.
‘We’ve got your back, Alpha’ Max linked.
But they remained in the shadows. Max was smart enough to see that Jack was still in a direct line of danger. I still wasn’t going to let anything happen to him.
“Jack, come here,” Sutton called gently. “Let’s get you safety.”
“Shut up, you evil bitch,” Daisy yelled, pulling Jack back. “He’s not going anywhere near you.”
“Jack,” Sutton said more insistently, “you’re going to run to the cabin. Run inside and shut the door. You’ll be safe there.”
Daisy laughed maniacally. “You really believe he’s going trust anything you say? He just admitted to trying to kill you, you stupid cunt.”
Jack shook his head. “No…”
“Shut up,” Daisy spat, shaking him harshly. “What are you waiting for, you fools? Kill her.”
One took a step forward and I laughed.
“You’re finally right about something, Daisy,” I said bitterly. “They are fools if they really think we came here without backup.”
Right on queue, Max and the other leapt from trees. We had given them plenty of time to circle around. The other three spun on their heels, now faced with five wolves baring down on them. This seemed to thoroughly enrage the leader in front of me. He turned to me with a snarl and launched.
All hell broke loose.
I half-shifted, stepping aside in time to catch him by the throat. Bringing my other hand up, I snapped his neck. The momentum had my spinning around in time to see Sutton’s lycan form throwing the second wolf threw the air, smashing him into a tree. It gave Max’s lycan the opportunity to stomp his skull in. I heard the others taking care of the rest and took advantage of the distraction.
‘Jack, run, now’ I linked as I rushed to Sutton as she shifted back, unable to hold the form any longer.
As I closed the distance, I saw Sutton’s face fill with terror a millisecond before I heard the loud pop echo off the cliffs. I turned back, freezing from shock as Daisy clutched Jack in front of her like a shield, a gun raised toward the sky. The air filled with the rancid smell of gun smoke. Where the fuck she got the weapon, I had no idea.
I shifted back into my human form. Daisy was practically panting from rage as she stared at me with utter hatred. I couldn’t lie that the feeling was mutual but that was the last thing I needed clouding my judgement in this situation. Still, I stood my ground… until she lowered the gun.
Pointing it at Jack’s head.
I stopped Sutton and myself as we each took a step. Everything else in the clearing froze.
“Daisy, think about what you’re doing,” I said as calmly as I could. “It’s over. There’s no reason to hurt him.”
Daisy half-laughed, half-sobbed. “Why not?” she cried, tears streaming down her face.
“Mom, please…”
“You really think you’re going to have any kind of life,” Daisy snapped. “You’re filthy traitor. A stain on the pack.” She turned back to me. “Face it, Lucas. He’ll never survive as a rogue. This would be a mercy.”
“He’s your son, Daisy,” I urged, refusing to believe she felt nothing for her own child. “He’s just a boy. He’ll be forgiven.”
Pain filled her expression, her hand dropping ever so slightly. Another sob shook through her. All her attention was on me. I lifted my hands to keep it there as Sutton inched closer to Jack.
“You’re a liar,” Daisy sniffed. “You wouldn’t… you couldn’t… You don’t care. You’re just a fool. Too blind to see that no one could ever love you like I do. No one. Why can’t you see that? Why can’t you see how much happier you’d be with me?”
“Daisy, just let him go,” I urged. “You say no could ever love me like you… what about Jack? Who on earth could ever love him like his mother? Because you do, Daisy. You do love him. So, don’t do this. Just let him go.”
Shook her head but she was thinking. She was hearing what I was saying to her. Her hold on Jack was faltering. The gun was lowering. Then she lifted her head, her eyes locking onto mine.
“You still don’t get it,” she said firmly. “You hurt me, Lucas. It may be the last thing I do, but you will understand. You will know exactly how much you hurt me”
Everything happened at once.
Daisy suddenly shoved Jack forward, aiming the gun in Sutton’s direction. Sutton was already moving toward Jack. A flash of fur joined the mix as I threw my body forward desperately. The explosive sound of the gun filled my ears as I the scene played out in slow motion.
Sutton’s arms going around Jack. Her body spinning into place between him and Daisy. Sutton and Jack falling the ground.
I landed in front of them. Utter panic and fear engulfing my entire body to the point the my field of vision began to blur. The only clear sight was Sutton and Jack. She was on her knees, leaning over Jack’s frozen form.
My hands went straight to her face. Begging the goddess to show me those beautiful gray and amber eyes. She looked back at me. Her hand pressing firmly to my chest.
“I’m okay,” she insisted. “We’re okay.”
Relief washed over me. I choked on the sob that gurgled from my chest. Wrapping my arms around both of them, my mouth slammed into Sutton’s. I kissed her like my life depended on it because, in that moment, it sure as fuck felt like it did.
The intensity of sheer emotion started to fade a little. My adrenaline leveling out. But I didn’t let go of my mate. Not until the blood curdling cry pierced my ears.
“Nooooo…”
I looked up in time to see Jack fall back to his knees next to us. My eyes following his and locking on Daisy’s.
She was lying on the ground covered in blood. Slashes traveling from her face down her neck and over her chest. An obvious arterial bleed pulsing from the open wound even a lycan couldn’t survive. Her hand dug at the ground as she gasped and sputtered in vain.
Sutton and I reached out, pulling jack against my chest so he didn’t watch as his mother rattle her last breath.
