“So… what do you think this means?” I asked. “If Daisy didn’t get it from human territory, then…”
“It means we should be more concerned about the Dawn Stalkers than even we thought,” Lucas said. “We need to get in touch with Hunter.”
“He’s not reachable at the moment,” Jaden said. “He checked in. He said he’s safe for now, but we’ll have to wait for him to contact us when he’s able to do so safely.”
Lucas stared at the metal object in front of him. I could sense his thoughts swirling around in his head. If only I could know what they were.
“This is something none of have dealt with before,” he finally spoke. “We can only speculate at the damage it can do which makes it’s simple existence here a danger. I can’t live with that.”
“So, what do we do about it?”
“We learn more,” Lucas replied. “We study what we have. Learn its secrets. Its capabilities. The we can trace it back to the source. But it’s foolish to chase after this when we are so incredibly uninformed.”
“How do you suppose we address that?” Max asked.
Lucas reached forward and covered the gun back up.
“I’ll take it to Ned,” Lucas said. “Even if he doesn’t have any expertise with these, I’m sure he’ll know someone who can help us.”
Jaden and Max exchanged worrying looks.
“So, just to be clear, you’re suggesting that we keep this to ourselves?” Jaden asked.
“For the time being,” Lucas confirmed. “I know that’s a lot to ask. I will command the others who were there that night for their own peace of mind. I will do the same for you if you choose. But we need to make sense of this and I’m not sure I trust the Council to give us the opportunity to do so.”
“Even Soloman?” Max asked.
Lucas shook his head. “I’ll contact him and see what the climate is like with the Council at the moment. If things are as tense as they are here, I might wait until he returns to Ironpaw territory to fill him in. But I will tell him. He’ll be a useful ally when this all hits the fan.”
“I don’t need a command,” Max said. “It’s no secret that Alpha Anders has friends in high places. Particularly among the Council. Without knowing who the information would go to, we have no way of being sure Anders couldn’t pay someone to look the other way. Or turn it back on our pack. I agree this should stay between us.”
“You know I don’t need a command,” Jaden said. “None of this sits well with me, but I trust your gut.”
“Thank you,” Lucas said. He looked at his aunt and uncle. “The same offer extends to you two. I know this is asking for more than just loyalty to me as your nephew or Alpha.”
“But we are loyal nonetheless,” Uncle Rodney stated, almost seeming offended. “Your father never bowed to the Royal Council and neither do we.”
I could feel Lucas’ pride and affection through our bond. But I also felt his guilt. This decision wasn’t made lightly on his part. I was starting to understand that this was just as dangerous for our friends as it was for Lucas and me. It made me uneasy. And determined. I wanted answers as much as Lucas did.
Especially if this had something to do with me and why Anders wanted me so badly.
“Is there anything else that needs to be addressed before we go?” Lucas asked. “Did our prisoner arrive at the dungeons securely?”
Jaden nodded. “He did.”
Out of the five Dawn Stalker wolves that had attacked us, only one survived. I knew Lucas had two of the warriors who had accompanied us transport him back to Thorncrest for questioning. I was glad to hear he hadn’t caused any more trouble for them on the way back. I would have expected him to try to escape.
“Then you guys head back to the packhouse,” Lucas said. “I’ll let Conner know my decision about Daisy before we follow.”
Everyone got up from the table except for Lucas. Max and Jaden headed out the front door while Uncle Rodney went out the back to start work for the day. Aunt Lara went upstairs. Lucas remained seated. Staring at the dark blue fabric that covered the object from my nightmares.
I sat back down next to him, leaning on his shoulder as I looped my arm in his.
“We’ll figure this all out, baby,” I whispered. “We’ll find answers.”
Lucas put his hand over mine, holding it firmly. There was an odd… blip in our connection. I lifted my head and looked at him.
“What is it?” I asked. Lucas was still hesitant to say what he wanted to say. “Lucas… talk to me.”
“Those deals your father helped Anders with…”
I knew what he was getting at. For a brief second, I was offended that he would ask but I pushed the feeling away. It was a reasonable thing to ask.
“No, my father didn’t do that kind of business,” I said. “Now that I think about it… I don’t know why any human would help arm a pack. Most humans believe our guns and weapons are what puts us on even footing with the lycans. It’s what keep them from taking over. So it would be counterintuitive to give lycans those weapons.”
“Normally, I would agree with you,” Lucas said, kissing the back of my hand. “But obviously something has changed.”
“Or Anders found the right human,” I said. “But that’s not my father. I’m sure of it.”
“I believe you,” Lucas said. “But I’m not sure if that makes the situation better or worse.”
