I was able to take out some of my frustrations during our workout. Despite my hormones, Lucas’ news managed to put an effective damper on the mood. Nova certainly didn’t have a problem expressing her disappointment. She hit Lucas with a few low blows along the way.
But… unfortunately, we understood why we had to make the decision.
Honestly, I really didn’t know much about a she-wolf’s heat before Lucas had said I was approaching it. Yes, I knew it happened but I didn’t exactly have any women around to actually explain what it was to me. That wasn’t the case anymore.
I had turned to Tarrah and my other friends to learn more about the process. When Tarrah first started telling me about it, suppressing my heat actually sounded like the better way to go. Apparently, my hormones go so crazy that I will become desperate to mate. To the point that it’s physically painful the longer I wait. Back before modern medicine, it wasn’t unheard of for she-wolves to lose their minds if their mate isn’t there to appease them. I would basically lose complete control of myself and that just made me feel sick.
But then she told me that that was really only a small part of the experience, especially with a mate who knows what they are doing. Since Lucas sensed the change coming, it will be easy to be ready when the heat takes over. Tarrah said most males take the responsibility very seriously. With their help, the pain and desperation will still be there, but in manageable waves. The rest of the time is basically pure pleasure. And the more my body started to feel the effects, the more appealing it all became.
So, yeah… I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t lock myself away with my incredibly sexy mate and have him service me for days on end.
But seriously, this is an experience that is supposed to be one of the happiest times of our lives. It’s why marked couples very rarely choose to suppress the heat. That option is typically used by non-mated females. It’s why lycan culture has laws and regulations around accommodating a couple’s absence during that time.
This was supposed to finally give Lucas and I the chance to focus solely on us. Damn it, we deserved that. After all of the struggles we’d faced so far, this was supposed to be something to look forward to.
Lucas came up behind me as I finished brushing my teeth that evening. He slid his arms around my waist and pulled me close.
“I know this sucks, princess,” he said gently. “But we have years to make up for it.”
“Do we?” I scoffed. “I’m sure something will end up getting in the way.”
Lucas sighed heavily. “Princess…”
“No,” I interrupted, slamming the vanity drawer closed. “I don’t want to hear that it will all be okay, Lucas. You know as well as I do this Summit is us walking into a trap. This is just another one of Anders’ attempts to get to me. There is something at every turn trying to tear us apart. We’re never going to catch a break.”
Pushing him away, I stormed out of the bathroom. I went to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of wine. I needed something — anything — to take the edge off. Lucas walked in as I downed half the glass.
“You’re upset. I understand…”
“I’m not just upset, Lucas,” I snapped. “I’m angry. I’m fucking pissed off. I’m pissed that everything has to be so complicated. I’m pissed that someone is always after me. I’m pissed that those bastards are still making my life miserable after five years of torture. I’m pissed they were able to do that to me in the first place. And I’m pissed that I still don’t fucking know why.”
I exhaled heavily as I pressed my palms against the counter, leaning over as I closed my eyes. I should have felt ashamed of my outburst but I really couldn’t be bothered at that moment. I had a right to be angry.
I felt Lucas come up next to me. Suddenly, his hand was gripping my chin and forcing my head up aggressively. Our eyes met and Rhonen flashed in his eyes as he looked back at me intensely.
“Good,” he growled. “Be angry. Be pissed off. You should be furious. They will take everything from us if given the chance.” He jerked me toward him, his hand slipping further down my neck as his hold tightened. “But we aren’t going to give them that chance, princess. Use that anger against them. Let it feed that cunning mind of yours. That mark you wear only showed them a glimpse of what you are capable of, baby. If they want to see more, give it to them. But don’t you fucking dare pull away from me.”
My stomach was fluttering out of control. The tingles from his touch were sending electricity straight to my core. My knees felt weak from the intense desire and control emanating from him. But his words… his words made me feel empowered. By whole body was buzzing with energy that needed to escape.
I grabbed his collar and yanked him toward me. My mouth slamming into his as I demanded he open from me. His tongue pressed against mine. With a jump, I wrapped my legs around his waist, grinding against him as desire took over. Holding his face in my hands, I pulled away slightly.
“If the summit is a trap…” I breathed, “let’s finish them once and for all.”
