“Jack, we didn’t tell anyone she was taken there,” I said. “No one else could have told the Dawn Stalkers.”
“But it wasn’t me,” Jack insisted. “I swear, I stopped talking to my mom after that night. I told her I wouldn’t help her anymore. I promise. It wasn’t me.”
“Okay, okay,” I replied. “I believe you.”
That meant we had another problem. If Jack hadn’t led the Dawn Stalkers to the manor house, who did? We had another traitor within the pack. Someone else was helping them. After we discovered Daisy, we were able to get one of the prisoners to confirm their contact was a woman. I assumed it had to be her. But we were wrong.
“Luna Sutton will never forgive me,” Jack said sadly.
“That’s not true, Jack,” I told him. “That’s not true at all. She’s already forgiven you. She’ll be here for you no matter what.”
“That’s… that’s what Nova said, too.”
I looked over at him in surprise. “When did you speak to Nova?”
“She spoke to me,” Jack explained. “That night… She told me everything would be okay. That she was going to protect me. She told me what to do to get away. I… I didn’t know we could hear each other’s wolves like that.”
I grinned a little. “Normally, we can’t. Not unless we’re shifted ourselves,” I confirmed. “Nova’s different. She’s special.”
“Is that why I heard my wolf?”
Again, I was hit with an unexpected response. He was still a little young to have his wolf coming in.
“You heard your wolf already?” I asked. “When?”
“Just before…” Jack trailed off, but I knew he meant just before his mother died. “He told me to listen to Nova. That she would keep us safe. And she did. Even though I betrayed her. She still protected me.”
“She’s a good person,” I said. “She cares about you.”
Jack nodded. “That’s why I feel so bad,” he said.
“All you can do is try your hardest to make it up to her, buddy,” I said.
“How?” he asked.
“I’m sure opportunities will present themselves,” I said. “If you really want to make it up to her, you’ll know what to do when it’s time.”
“Okay.”
We fell back into silence, albeit a more comfortable one this time. I thought about asking him how he was doing with his mother being gone but I felt like it was too soon to push that subject. I did want to talk to Aunt Lara about making sure he gets into therapy. Even if he couldn’t talk to me about her, he would need to talk to someone. But that could wait until later.
“Can I ask what your wolf’s name is?”
“Eckon,” Jack replied.
I smiled. A warm, comforting feeling filling my chest.
“What?” Jack asked.
“Did your mother never tell you the name of your father’s wolf?”
He shook his head.
“His name was Echo.”
I left Jack at the garden to help Sutton after Aunt Lara came down. He already seemed to be in better spirits after our talk. He was far from his normal self, but I didn’t expect that to happen any time soon. But any improvement is good to see.
I headed up to my office to meet with Soloman. Requesting Jaden and Max to join us as well.
“I talked to Jack today,” I told them. “There’s a second pack member working with the Dawn Stalkers.”
Max cursed. Jaden sat up straighter.
“Are you certain?” Soloman questioned.
“No, but there’s a strong possibility,” I said. “Jack didn’t tell his mother about Sutton being taken to the manor house. It couldn’t have been her who tipped off the second group.”
“Are you sure?” Max asked. “It could have been a lucky guess on Daisy’s part.”
I shook my head. “I don’t know how she would have gotten the address,” I said. “I know the manor house isn’t top secret, but its location isn’t public knowledge either. That’s the point of having a more private residence outside the city.”
“So, we need to question our guests down in the dungeons some more,” Jaden stated.
“Perhaps, but I’m not sure they know who they’re dealing with,” I said. “They’ve never met their contact. They could only tell us it was a woman’s voice on the other end of a single phone call. Whoever it is, they’re doing a better job at coving their tracks.”
Max ran a hand down his face.
“You know that means their involvement is likely more calculated,” he said. “Daisy was out of her mind by the end. She wasn’t far from it when they approached her, I’m sure. They exploited her infatuation with you. I’d be hard-pressed to believe the same situation is happening again.”
“I agree,” I replied.
“So, what do we tell Sutton?” Jaden asked. “If the group we captured near the manor is our only link to this other traitor, it’s highly possible the information came from her. Inadvertently, of course.”
“We won’t be telling her anything,” I said.
“I’m not sure that’s a wise…”
“I’m not asking your opinion on the matter,” I interrupted Soloman. I wasn’t in the mood for his self-righteousness. “We have the Alpha’s Summit in six days. She has enough on her plate without adding this to it. She’s finally getting a chance to breathe. To feel safe here.”
“But it’s a false sense of security,” Jaden bit back.
“It’s okay, Beta Jaden,” Soloman said. “Alpha Lucas may have a point. Perhaps it is better that Luna Sutton doesn’t know about this just yet.”
I should have been relieved but Soloman’s support made me suspicious. I narrowed my eyes at him.
“I’m just saying, you could be right,” Soloman said. “After all, she’s so busy preparing for the summit, learning all about the attendees, trying to formulate a plan to get you out of this mess. Having to worry about who she tells or talks to between now and then would only make that harder for her.”
My jaw clenched. The grip on the arm of my chair tightened. Rhonen snickered in my head like an asshole.
“Fine,” I forced through gritted teeth. “I will tell her. But I don’t appreciate being manipulated, Ambassador.”
“And your Luna doesn’t appreciate being underestimated.”
