I felt the wind rush out of me. I was completely caught off guard by her words. Nova whimpered in my mind. After more than two years, that was the first thing she said to me. I was even more confused than before.
“Hannah…” I pressed, taking her hand. “What are you doing here? Why would you come with them?”
She yanked her hand away. “Oh, please,” she snapped. “Did you really think I would just let Mason live with his grief? After what you did to him?”
“What?” I blurted out. “What are you talking about, Hannah? We need to get you out of here. It’s not safe.”
Hannah laughed bitterly. “Of course it’s not,” she replied sardonically. “You would say that. You were always so dramatic. Maybe if you weren’t such a backstabbing slut, you wouldn’t need to be so paranoid.”
I dropped her hand, feeling like she had just kicked me in the gut. Nova snarled in my mind, the fur of her neck standing on end as she started to pick up on something that was still completely eluding me.
“Hann…”
“What did you expect was going to happen after you nearly murdered your own mate?” Hannah spat. “You left him for dead after stabbing him in the chest. Did you expect him to still love you after that? What am I saying? You don’t care. All you cared about was being rid of the lowly Beta so you could screw the first Alpha you came across. I’m sure you gave him an impressive sob story, too. You are such a good liar, after all.”
My face contorted in disbelief. “That’s not what happened, Hannah,” I urged. “Why would I lie to you? I’ve never lied to you.”
“Why would you lie?” Hannah repeated incredulously. “To get your way just like you always do. To ruin everything for everyone else. Because you’re so jealous that he could actually care about me.”
“That’s absurd,” I choked. “Hannah, I’m trying to protect you. You’re my sister. Mason…”
“Oh, shut up. Get it through your head, Sutton,” Hannah continued venomously, “Mason is done with you. Or did you really believe he wouldn’t be able to move on? Get over yourself. It didn’t take him long at all to realize he could do so much better. He’s with me now. So, stay away from us.”
I felt like I was going to hyperventilate again. The pure shock of what I was hearing was the only thing keeping me from crumpling into a heap on the floor. Nova was trying to pull me away but my feet were planted to the floor. I felt bile start to rise in my throat.
Someone pulled at my arm and Hannah’s gaze shifted.
“Luna, we should go,” Tarvyn’s voice murmured beside me.
Hannah sneered. “So, is this him?” she asked, looking Tarvyn up and down. “The pathetic excuse for an Alpha who thinks it’s okay to steal another man’s mate?”
I choked, opening my mouth to say something but unable to find the words. But I didn’t have to. Tarvyn moved between my sister and me, towering over her menacingly.
“I am her guard,” he said through gritted teeth. “I will not tolerate you disrespecting my Luna or my Alpha. I suggest you walk away, little girl.”
Hannah balked under Tarvyn’s intimidating stature. Still, she managed to compose herself. Straightening up as she threw her hair proudly over her shoulder.
“Tell your so-called Luna that I have nothing to say to her,” Hannah said bitterly. “She’s no sister of mine.”
Hannah looked past him, looking me up and down, expressing a disgusted huff before walking away.
Something in me broke. Shattering deep inside my being. I felt my knees give way beneath me. A set of arms wrapped around me, keeping me from hitting the floor. There was a hushed discussion going on around me but I didn’t register what they were saying. All I knew was that I was suddenly moving. I didn’t know where I was being taken. After what I had just heard, I wasn’t sure I cared.
I don’t think I took a breath the entire way back to the elevator. That would explain my head spinning so much. But it was the churning in my stomach that was going to take over. The movement of the elevator didn’t help and the moment doors opened again, I hurriedly stumbled to the trash can across the hall. Making it just in time for the contents of my stomach to make a second appearance.
Once I finished heaving my guts out, I sank to the floor. But I wasn’t there long before a familiar scent engulfed me, lifting me into his arms as the world fell away. Lucas carried me back to our suite, setting me on the edge of the bed before kneeling down in front of me.
“Sutton, talk to me,” he insisted, grabbing my chin firmly. “Tell me what happened.”
It was too much. I couldn’t relive it. I couldn’t face the hatred I saw in my own sister’s eyes. How could she do this? How could she feel that way about me? How could she think those things? After all I had done… After all I had been through…
‘Mason,’ Nova snarled in my head as she paced furiously. ‘He’s poisoned her mind.’
She was right. That had to be it. My hands fisted in my lap. Rage suddenly consuming me.
How dare he? That evil bastard. How dare he turn her against me? She meant nothing to him. She was a human. He’d never actually be with her. He was doing this just to mess with me. Just to humiliate and hurt me. That sadistic asshole was trying to break me again. Who did he think he was going after the people I loved?
Too bad he couldn’t. I wasn’t that pathetic little girl anymore. I wasn’t someone he could manipulate and control anymore. He made a big mistake using my family to try to get to me. He would pay for it.
“Sutton…” Lucas urged.
I locked eyes with him, not holding back an ounce of my fury.
“I’m going to kill him.”
