Sutton launched to her feet. Rage permeating off of her as she began to pace the room. I’d only gotten a brief explanation from Tarvyn and Amos once I made it up to our floor. They had linked me to say that something had gone wrong with Hannah and that Sutton wasn’t okay. I was already on my way back to her after feeling her confusion and heartbreak so strongly through our bond that it almost knocked me to my knees.
But hearing Sutton — my sweet, sensitive Sutton — demanding Mason’s blood was gut-wrenching. And terrifying… Nova was flashing in her eyes every few steps. I could see Sutton’s control over the shift starting to slip as her claws extended. Even Rhonen wasn’t sure how to react.
“Mason is a dead man, Lucas,” she snarled. “I don’t give a fuck about the rules. He’s turned my family against me. He’s going to pay for it. I don’t care what they do to me. I’m going to rip his throat out. He’s not leaving here alive.”
I grabbed her arms firmly, stopping her in her tracks.
“Sutton, stop,” I demanded. “I don’t know what happened with Hannah but this isn’t you.”
“Maybe that’s the problem,” she snapped. “I should have finished the job back in that cabin. I should have bled him dry and rid the world of his filth. But I was too weak. No more.” She ripped her arms from my grasp and pushed past me. “This ends now.”
I leapt at her, grabbing her around the waist and lifting her off her feet. She flailed against my hold, landing a good hit to my face with her elbow. Luckily, I knew her well enough that I managed to turn my head just in time to avoid a broken nose. Throwing her onto the bed, I grabbed her wrists and pinned her to the mattress.
“Stop,” I commanded her.
She froze beneath me. Shock filling her expression as she obeyed me. Guilt immediately filled my chest for commanding her. I never wanted to take that control from her. But what else could I do?
“I’m sorry, baby,” I said. “You weren’t giving me a choice.”
Her jaw was clenched tightly as she breathed heavily through her nose. She had stopped fighting but she still wasn’t calming down.
“You can’t do this, Sutton,” I told her. “I won’t let you get yourself killed.”
An eerie laugh escaped my mate. “My family hates me,” she said. “As long as I take that bastard with me, I don’t care.”
My grip faltered. Shock and horror filling me down to my soul. Sutton slipped free. Throwing an arm over the back of my neck to pull me off balance, giving her the opportunity to roll me off of her. Using the momentum, she tried to head for the door again, but I was still faster than her. She didn’t even get both feet off the bed before I had a hold of her again. This time, I was restraining her arms, desperately trying not to hurt her as we fell to the floor.
“Stop fighting,” I commanded again. She fought it for a moment before going limp against me.
“Bastard,” she hissed at me.
“I won’t apologize for saving you from yourself, Sutton,” I told her as I prepared myself for what I was going to do next. “Calm down. Go to sleep.”
Again, she tried to fight the command but ultimately succumbed. I suspected Nova knew I was trying to help and forced her to submit. But it still hurt like hell having to do that to her. I just prayed that she would forgive me when this was all over.
Scooping her up, I moved her onto the bed. I linked Motty to come and sit with her. I wasn’t going to leave her alone and risk her going after Mason if she woke up. But I needed to figure out what the fuck was going on.
Once Motty arrived, I left to find Tarvyn and Amos, only to open the door and see them waiting in the hall with Max and Soloman.
“What the fuck, Soloman?” I demanded. “How did you let this happen?”
“Not here,” Soloman said firmly, indicating the cameras monitoring the hallways.
We went into the nearest hotel room. I forced my hands through my hair as I worked to stay calm myself. It was a struggle after what had just happened. I decided to put the how aside for now. Hannah was here with Mason and Anders. Dealing with that was what mattered.
“What happened between Sutton and her sister?” I asked Tarvyn and Amos.
They exchanged looks. I could tell they were mind-linking each other. Probably trying to talk the other into telling me what was going on.
“Now,” I demanded.
Amos grimaced, rubbing the back of his neck. “Don’t tell Luna I said this, but let’s just say her sister is a real bitch.”
“Amos,” Max reprimanded.
“I said what I said,” Amos said with a shrug.
“It seems like Luna’s sister has been listening to bad influences,” Tarvyn said more tactfully. “She turned on Luna Sutton. Saying some pretty awful things to her and about her. For her sister’s own safety, I won’t repeat what she said. Other than she no longer considers Luna Sutton as family.”
I felt the energy drain from me. Understanding the pain Sutton had felt so deeply. I sank into a chair, roughly rubbing my face with my hands.
“It’s all lies,” Amos said. “The girl obviously has some sick infatuation with Beta Mason. He’s pulling every string she has.”
“All the more reason to get her away from him,” I stated.
“That may be harder than you think, Alpha,” Tarvyn voiced. “She seems to be a pretty willing participant in this.”
“It doesn’t matter how willing she is, she’s a pawn. An expendable one at that,” I said. “Sutton would never forgive me if her sister died because I didn’t do anything. Regardless of what was said or how Hannah feels.”
“So… what’s the plan?” Max asked. “We can’t make any moves today. Not after our little diversion. Security is on high alert and likely will be the rest of the night.”
“I can assist with that,” Soloman said.
“That won’t be necessary,” I said. “There’s no getting to her now. We’ll have to wait until the end of the summit. And there may be a simple solution anyway. What we do need to do is get Sutton’s stepfather and youngest sister to Ironpaw territory.”
