I returned to our suite to find Sutton awake, sitting at the head of the bed, knees up to her chest, arms wrapped around her legs. Motty sat next to her with an arm around Sutton’s shoulders. She spoke gently to her, keeping her relatively calm. There was a sadness creeping through our connection, but it wasn’t the deep despair I had been fearing would plague my poor mate when she woke. Motty gave me a nod as I approached, getting up so that I could take her place.
I pulled Sutton onto my lap, running my fingers through her hair. I didn’t say anything. If she decided she wanted to talk, we would. But all I wanted was for her to know I was here for her. I hoped she would fall back to sleep. A natural, restful sleep this time. I thought that’s where she was heading, until she finally spoke.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “That wasn’t very productive behavior.”
I took a deep breath, exhaling heavily as I pulled her tighter in my arms.
“I hate him, Lucas,” she said with conviction, her fingers fisting my shirt. “I hate him so much.”
“Shh, I know, princess,” I told her. “I know. But we’re here now. We have the opportunity to take him down. That’s the safest way to get your sister away from them. Just remember that. Remember why we’re here.”
Sutton pushed off my chest, looking me in the eye. I could see her mind working as we stared at each other.
“You’re right,” she said strongly. “Hannah was never one to do something she didn’t absolutely want to do. It may hurt me that she’s here by choice, but at least that makes her safer for now. Mason won’t lay a hand on her as long as she’s doting on him. Not while they’re under so much scrutiny here.”
“They’ll also be more likely to give her more freedoms,” I pointed out.
Sutton nodded. “Knowing Mason, he’ll think he broke me.” Her fingers clamped down harder on the fabric they held. Nova flashed in her eyes. “Underestimating me will be his undoing.”
She was trying hard to control her temper, to reign in the anger that threatened to overwhelm her again. I could feel it at the edge of our bond. But she was doing far better than she had been. Instead of a hot rage, I saw a cold, calculating anger. I didn’t think her statement had ever been more true than it was right now.
I thought about my warning to Soloman. I was not a good man during the rebellion. I was decisive, destructive, and brutal. But the liberation of my pack made it all worth it. I never doubted I could be that man again if there was ever another threat to my pack. I didn’t like being that person, but I never felt like I was losing anything by becoming him.
Then Sutton came along.
My sweet, courageous, perfect mate. Who could show kindness and understanding when anyone else would have lashed out. Who saw beauty in everything she touched. Who inspired trust and loyalty in everyone she met. Who made me believe I could be just as good and fair as she was.
My Sutton.
That Sutton was still there. I could still feel her as strong as ever. But… now there was more. There was something else. A darker side of her I would never have thought existed.
I should have been terrified. I should have found a way to chase it away. I should have never wanted to see what that part of Sutton was capable of.
But I did.
With our enemies closing in on us, how could I not imagine just how formidable we could be together? We could put an end to every threat. We could make ourselves untouchable.
‘Dark paths are dangerous, cousin,’ Emlyn’s voice echoed in my mind. A distant memory coming back to haunt me. ‘To traverse them means to risk losing yourself — losing your soul. You better make sure you have a strong anchor to keep you tethered to who you really are.’
I feared I would have to become someone Sutton hated. Now I was considering letting her risk becoming someone she would hate. But I couldn’t imagine denying her that part of herself. I couldn’t even imagine it being possible for her to lose herself. She was too strong. Too good. And I would never let her forget who she was. If she was forced to go down that road, I would be right there with her.
I was Sutton’s anchor. And she was mine.
My hand went to the nape of her neck. My fingers fisting in her hair as a primal desire to claim her all over again took hold of me. Watching her come into the strength and power of a true Luna was the greatest honor of my life. Yet, I suddenly felt the need to remind her who she belonged with. The need to remind her she was mine.
Lifting her by the waist, I swiftly turned her so she was now straddling me. The form-fitting skirt she wore rode up her thighs, giving me all the access I needed.
“Lucas…” she hissed as my hand moved between us.
“No one can ever break you, princess,” I growled, pressing my fingers against the thin layer of fabric of her panties. “Not while I’m still breathing.”
Her arousal pooled in my hand. I pushed the silk aside, sliding two fingers inside her easily. I watched her eyes flutter shut as a knuckle pressed against her clit. She bit her lip. Her breathing quickened as I worked slowly.
“No matter what happens next,” I told her, relishing in the sight of her magnificence, “no one will be able to deny the only thing that matters — you’re mine.”
