“We need to get to Hannah,” Sutton insisted as soon as we were back in our room. “Once they find out she took the box, they’ll kill her.”
“They won’t go that far, not here,” I said. “Not after what you just did. It would destroy them.”
“You overestimate Mason’s control,” Sutton said. “Besides, you heard her last night, she’s going to tell Mason herself. She truly believes she did him a favor by giving it me.”
“Okay… I’m not sure what is going on, but is this about the box I think it’s about?” Max asked.
“Yes,” Sutton said. “The box my mother for me. The box Anders stole from me.”
“How the hell did Hannah end up with it?”
“Honestly, I have no idea,” Sutton replied.
“Anders must have brought it along,” I said. “For some last-ditch attempt to lay claim to Sutton somehow, maybe.”
“Hang on… You guys have the box? So… what was inside it? Did you find the answers you’ve been looking for?” Motty asked.
“We didn’t open it,” I said.
“I wanted to wait until we were back home,” Sutton admitted.
“Okay… okay, that’s understandable,” Max stated. “However, you have the box. Anders is going to know you have the box. That’s going to create a whole new set of problems. Especially if word gets out before we reconvene.”
“We don’t have it,” I said, checking my phone. I’d messaged Soloman about the situation. He just replied, assuring me it was well hidden. “We sent it somewhere safe.”
“That’s what you needed Amos for last night?” Max questioned.
“Yeah,” I confirmed.
“Look, that doesn’t matter right now,” Sutton said urgently as she paced. “Right now, what matters is my sister. I don’t care what she said or did, she doesn’t deserve to be left in the hands of those…”
A heavy knock on the door interrupted her. We all froze, exchanging looks with each other. Another loud knock sounded, more forceful this time.
“Alpha Lucas, it’s hotel security,” a male voice called through the door.
I opened the door to find four hotel security workers and Anders waiting out.
“Where is it?” Anders demanded, trying to force his way through but he was held back by the others.
“Alpha Anders, gentlemen, what can I do for you?”
The head guard put his hand up to silence Anders before he could speak again. He seemed to have no patience for his antics. I could only imagine what he had been subjected to over the last half hour.
“Pardon our intrusion, Alpha Lucas,” the guard said politely. “It seems that an important item has gone missing from the Dawn Stalker suites. We have been informed that this item may be found in your possession.”
“So, you’re accusing me of stealing?” I said incredulously.
“No, Alpha, of cour…”
“Get out of the way, Danvers,” Anders growled.
“Alpha Lucas, we would like to search your suites,” the guard stated. “If you don’t mind stepping out…”
“Why don’t you tell me what you’re looking for first,” I replied. “Seeing as I have no idea what you’re talking about or how anything of yours would end up anywhere on this floor.”
“Don’t play games with me,” Anders spat.
A laugh burst through. “No, Alpha, that’s your move. Not mine.”
“Alpha Lucas, please, step aside,” the guard requested again.
“Hotel security is welcome to search wherever they want,” I stated. “But Alpha Anders isn’t stepping foot in our accommodations. As sanctioned by the Royal Council.”
“Of course, Alpha.”
I stepped aside and let the guard and two of his companions in. I went to Sutton’s side, not intending to leave the room for a moment. They quickly began rummaging through everything. Checking cabinets. Pulling things out of drawers. Lifting furniture. We stood to the side, easily looking innocent and, understandably, offended by this invasion of privacy.
“There’s nothing here,” the lead guard stated when they were done.
“What… you incompetent fool, it has to be here,” Anders cried from the doorway. “Look again.”
“Alpha Lucas, Luna Sutton, please forgive our intrusion.”
“I can overlook it this time,” I stated. “However, I will be informing the Council of this further persecution of me, my Luna, and my pack.”
The guard pursed his lips and bowed his head. Signaling the rest of his men to leave, he headed for the door. The door where Anders stood fuming.
“Don’t be so smug, Danvers,” Anders spat. “You haven’t won yet. Let’s see how long the whore stays with you once you’ve been stripped of your title.”
I didn’t bother with a response. I simply pulled Sutton closer, knowing he would never understand what we had together.
The guard shut the door behind him and I felt Sutton start to breathe again.
“Hannah’s not safe, Lucas,” she said. “We have to do something.”
“We’re taking care of that, Luna,” Max assured her. “But she has made it very clear she is with them by choice. So, if we grab her now, it won’t be seen as a rescue mission, no matter what Beta Mason did to you.”
“So, what? Am I just supposed to stand by while he does goddess knows what to her?”
“No,” Max replied. “And yes. I need you to trust me. We have a plan in place to get her free. And there are some things we can do to make sure she isn’t harmed until then. But bursting in and demanding her back won’t work in our favor. And, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d rather prioritize keeping our Alpha and Luna with us.
