We sent Max and Motty out to keep a handle on the situation. Hotel security didn’t stop at just searching our suite. They moved on to search every room on our floor. And apparently, Alpha Renward’s floor as well. He reached out to us not long after they had left us. From the sound of it, Anders had wanted to check Alpha Derion’s and Alpha Thane’s floors as well but the head of security refused. I guess he didn’t want to end up in trouble for disrespecting half the pack Alphas in the country.
“We got incredibly lucky,” I told Lucas when things had died down. “I wasn’t even thinking about Anders trying to get the box back last night. If I hadn’t thought to send it to Soloman…”
“Why would you think about it?” Lucas stated. “The fact that he pulled this stunt just shows how desperate and/or pissed off he really is. What would they have done even if they did find it here? It yours, Sutton. I belongs to you and it would have been easy to prove just by opening it.”
“That’s true…” I replied.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the box now. Last night, all I wanted to think about was facing the Council today. I needed to get through that before anything else. Now that I had… Well, the prospect of finding out exactly who I am was becoming more and more enticing.
It didn’t help that Anders behavior was all but confirming our suspicions. There was no way he would care about what was in that container if it didn’t allude to some kind of royal connection. What would he get out of it otherwise?
What was he trying to get out of it now?
“If an Alpha is mated to a member of the royal family, what would that mean for the Alpha?” I asked absently.
“That really depends on several factors,” Lucas replied. “Where they are in the bloodline or the line of succession would make a difference, for sure. It could have little impact or could make them next in line for the throne. Is that what you’re worried about?”
“That’s what I’m worried Anders is after,” I said solemnly. “I don’t think we can deny the likelihood of who my mother was any longer, Lucas. Too many things are adding up.”
“I know,” replied. “But there are still things that don’t. Like, why would he mate you to Mason instead of claiming you himself? What does that accomplish?”
“That’s easy for me to guess,” I said with a snort. “I didn’t have a wolf. Whatever plan he has, it’s something that has been in the making for a long time. He wouldn’t link himself so publically or permanently to a human or wolfless lycan unless he was absolutely sure he would get what he wanted.”
“That still doesn’t mean your mother was…”
“Why else involve my sister?” I interrupted. “There’s no way they would put up with a human just to have come here to badmouth me. They had other options to support their claims about my character. Half the packhouse could have come up with something convincing. Face it — if our mother was royalty, then both my sisters are too. Humans or not.”
“But they are human,” Lucas said. “And they were raised entirely in the human world. I don’t see her status having much influence. Not more than yours would.”
“That’s obviously why he would rather have me back under his thumb,” I retorted. “But if he can’t, he’ll take the next best thing.”
Lucas let out a long, slow breath. Rubbing the back of his neck as he sat down on the sofa.
“I can’t argue that you’re wrong, baby,” he replied. “But if you’re right, what do we do with that information?”
I let out a frustrated grunt.
“I was kind of hoping you could give me that answer,” I said, falling onto the sofa next to him.
“At the risk of sounding repetitive, I say we do nothing,” Lucas replied, sliding an arm around my shoulder. “Hannah is human. No one is going to take a claim that she is royalty seriously. Which is likely why Anders is so desperate to get the box back. He can’t use her for whatever his goal is. But I have a feeling that’s not sitting well with you either.”
‘You’re not meant to stay in hiding,’ Nova voiced in my mind.
‘I don’t want to be a royal,’ I told her.
‘But you want to know who we are,’ she argued. ‘You want to know what our mother had to say to us.’
I sighed, leaning further into Lucas’ hold. “I want to know what’s in the box,” I admitted. “I agree the best move is to do nothing for now. I don’t want to give Anders any more reasons to use me or my family. But I need to know what was so important to my mother. I owe her that much.”
Lucas kissed the top of my head. His fingers running through my hair. I swear I felt him smile.
“You know it won’t change who you are, princess,” he said softly. “You would be the same beautiful, courageous woman that I fell madly in love with, regardless of what’s in that box. This is just something to better understand your past. And to bring you closer to your mother.”
“And hopefully… those things will help us prepare for any surprises in our future,” I replied.
“Exactly,” Lucas agreed. “I’ll message Soloman.”
