There was a throbbing behind my eyes and my mouth was dry as a desert as I started to regain consciousness. I groaned as my body protested the moving of my arms and legs. Still, I forced my eyes open. Confusion swirled through my mind but my first instinct was to figure out my surroundings.
“Wakey, wakey,” a horribly familiar voice barked from a blurring figure before me.
It was unnecessary confirmation when my vision cleared and I was faced with the man I hated most in the world crouching in front of me. Everything felt so familiar yet so foreign at the same time. My vision had cleared but my mind was still fuzzy. I didn’t know why but I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be here.
“Mason…” I croaked.
“I wouldn’t try to speak,” he stated coldly. “We had to dose the wolfsbane pretty high to make sure it would work after all those years in your system. We can’t have you reaching out to your precious Alpha.”
Wolfsbane… Alpha… Lucas!
My memories came flooding in, shocking my mind into clarity. Now, I knew they were memories and the last few months hadn’t all been a dream. I almost choked on my relief until panic quickly replaced it as I tried to reach for Nova. But she wasn’t there. Mason had got to me. He had taken me and I had no idea where I was.
Mason stood up an walked away. I took the opportunity to look around. We were in some kind of warehouse. It was mostly empty, leaving plenty of open space but no windows. At least none that were useful in telling me where I was. And without knowing how long I’d been out, there was no telling how far we had gotten. I tried to contact Nova again. This time I felt a hint of her presence. But it was only the slightest whisper.
I jumped when someone knelt beside me, holding a water bottle out for me to drink. That’s when I realized my hands were bound. I looked over to see who was next to me and immediately recoiled. All the events of that night came rushing back.
It was Motty.
“Please, Sutton, you need to drink,” she said, offering the bottle again.
“I’m not taking anything from you,” I rasped. “You betrayed me. After everything I did for you.”
“I know. I’m so sor…”
Mason’s sadistic laugh cut her off. He was standing at a work bench close by, going through the tools that were available. I swallowed, knowing exactly what he was doing. More memories threatened to engulf my mind. Far less pleasant ones this time. Panic gripped at my insides, squeezing them like a vice until I could barely breath.
No. I had to keep my head. I had to keep calm. I needed a distraction.
“Wha…” I cleared my throat of the thick saliva that had settled. “What’s so funny?”
Mason turned, a heavy wrench in his hand as he looked between the two of us.
“Oh, just that she thinks any kind of apology will make a difference,” he replied lightly. “It’s amusing. It’s as if she believes saying sorry is going to make her actions any less of a betrayal.”
“That’s not wh…”
“Oh, blah, blah, blah, who cares?” Mason interrupted. “It doesn’t matter and I find your sniveling grating.”
“It matters to me,” I stated, not entirely sure it did at that moment but needing the conversation to keep going while I got my bearings. “I want to know why.”
Mason snorted. I could almost hear him roll his eyes even though his back was to me again.
“Suit yourself,” he said with a shrug. “Go on, my little pet. Tell her why.”
Motty looked at me, pain and shame and sorrow in her eyes. Eyes I thought I knew.
“I did it to save my mother,” she said.
I huffed, wriggling against my bonds as I tried to scoot further away from her.
“Your mother is dead,” I said. “You told so yourself.”
Motty shook her head. “I lied,” she said behind a sob. “Everything I told you about her mate and my father was true. And she did try to kill herself that night but… she survived. They locked her away.”
“Why lie about that, Motty?”
“Because they didn’t just send her to some prison. They locked her in an asylum,” she cried. “It’s an awful place. They keep her drugged up all the time. They neglect her. They beat her. They…” Motty swallowed hard against her next words. “They killed her wolf.”
I didn’t know what to say. It was horrible to hear but I still didn’t understand why it meant she had to betray me.
“That’s why my Aunt Nell brought me to the Ironpaw Pack,” she continued to explain. “I spent weeks visiting my mother. Watching her waist away. Aunt Nell didn’t want that for me. It was easier to lie and just say she was dead than admit that I abandoned her.”
“But why set me up?”
“Because Alpha Anders promised to get her out if I helped him,” Motty finally admitted. “He’d tell Alpha Hudson to let her go.”
Mason started laughing again. Louder and more maniacally this time.
“Oh, you stupid girl,” he said, turning toward us. “You still believe that?”
“Wh… what do you mean?” Motty stuttered.
“Who told you about this deal, little pet?” Mason asked with a sick smile as he watch Motty try to work things out in her mind. “That’s right. Me. And guess what?” He took a few steps forward and crouched down in front of her. “I lied. Anders doesn’t even know who the fuck you are, let alone care about your psycho mother.”
“No… no, you couldn’t…” Motty choked. “That’s not true. He promised.”
Mason stood up, laughing again. “Oh, please, you really think we would waist our time on her when you already gave us everything we wanted.” He looked at me. “Didn’t you know? Your little playmate here has been feeding us information for weeks. She’s been very helpful.”
Motty let out a blood curdling scream as she launched into the air. A blur of fur instantly replacing her as she shifted mid-flight. Aiming right for Mason’s throat. But she was no match for him. He quickly maneuvered, catching her by the neck and hurling her across the room.
“Motty…”
