I watched Motty’s wolf slam against a steel support beam. A yelp paired with a sickening crunch echoing off the metal walls. She hit floor in a crumpled heap, shifting back into her human form. I struggled against my restraints as Mason walking over to her.
“Mason, leave her alone,” I yelled desperately. “You won. Just leave her alone.”
“Oh, calm down,” he drawled as he bent down to check her pulse. “She’s still alive. You know, you always had a flare for the dramatic. When you weren’t being so incredibly boring, that is.” He stood back up and went back to the work bench and picked up a heavy chain. “Besides, now we have some privacy.”
My eyes darted around the room. We did appear to be alone.
“What about your men?” I asked. “What about my sister? Surely she tagged along with you.”
He knelt before me and looped the chain through the bindings around my hands.
“Oh, she certainly did,” he replied gleefully. “Can’t get rid of the parasite. She’s out arranging our getaway. She’ll be back eventually.”
“I’m sure she’d want to see whatever you have planned for me,” I said, still trying to bide time somehow and failing miserably. “Seeing as she hates me so much.”
“Does she?” he replied casually. He shrugged. “All we cared about is that she played her part. I didn’t really give a shit if it was true or if she was just desperate for my attention.” He gave me a sickening wink. “She really is insanely infatuated with me. And I haven’t even fucked her.”
His hand shot to my face, gripping me by the jaw as he leaned in close. He took a deep breath, like he was taking in my scent. My heart was pounding and his touch made me sick to my stomach.
“Maybe I’ll change that tonight,” he said, a sick eagerness in his tone. “I’ll let her see you hung up… bleeding out… You can watch as I fuck your sister within an inch of her life. I bet she’d even beg me for more as I strangle her to death. I might actually putting my cock inside a filthy human for that.”
“You’re a sick bastard…”
He clamped down over my mouth so hard I thought my jaw would break.
“You know me so well, baby,” he said with a chuckle. “Maybe I’ll revisit you, too. Really make that love-sick puppy of yours feel my work.”
Lucas.
My beautiful mate’s face filled my mind. My chest started to burn. Was he looking for me? Did he even know I was missing yet? What would he do when he found my body? More than anything I wanted to see him again. I wasn’t ready to leave him.
Mason stood and yanked hard at the chain, threatening to pull my arms from their sockets as he began to drag me across the floor. I didn’t make it easy for him. As I struggled, I felt Nova stir more strongly in my mind. I could almost reach her now. I thought there might be hope I could get out of this… until I saw the hook dangling from a pulley on the ceiling.
He was headed right for it. If he got me strung up there, it was over. There was no way I could free myself.
I started to fight harder. More desperately. Fear and panic finally taking over as I forgot all my training. I managed to pull my ankles from their constraints but it didn’t do much as I failed to focus my energy. Instead I just flailed about trying to get any kind of purchase to get free.
But it was no use. With one hand, Mason lifted the chain and looped it onto the hook. My toes dangled centimeters above the concrete floor. Just out of reach of any solid footing. I kicked out at him, catching him in the stomach. I felt a brief moment of satisfaction, then his fist found my face.
My vision went black as I felt my nose break but I didn’t pass out. Blood began to pour down my face, dripping to the floor as I hung my head, dazed and fuzzy. Then Mason was in front of me again, crowbar in hand as he tore the layers of my gown away to give him better access.
‘Fight,’ I heard Nova ever so faintly echo in my mind. ‘Fight, Sutton.’
He swung. My cry cut off from the air rushing out of my abdomen.
‘How…’ I reached for her, still not able to feel the shift. ‘I can’t…’
‘Yes, you…’ her voice faded out with another blow to my ribs. ‘…weaknesses,’ Nova echoed again, pushing me to action.
Mason didn’t have any weaknesses. At least none that a could exploit in the my current situation. Except…
He hit me in the hip and I started laughing. He paused. I managed to lift my head and see the peculiar mix of confusion and anger on his face.
“I fail to see what you’re laughing about.”
“Oh, come on, Mason,” I chuckled. “You said it yourself — I know you so well. You really think you’re going to be satisfied with killing me this way? This is too easy.”
“Ha… and what do you suggest?” he retorted. “That I just let you free?”
I spit the blood that was pooling in my mouth onto the floor. “Well, yeah… Come on. You can’t tell me your favorite moments together weren’t when I fought back. I remember… that look in your eyes. You loved it.”
A sick grin appeared briefly and I knew he was tempted. But he faltered.
“You really think you would give me any kind of a fight?” he scoffed. “Injured, drugged, and back to being wolfless?”
I noticed movement from the corner of my eye. It was Motty. She was dragging herself toward the release lever for the hook. Feeling a new sense of determination, I reached deeper for Nova. I had to be ready to shift.
“Oh, please, you know you’d love that,” I continued to taunt him. “Seeing me crawling on all fours… Desperately trying to get away… to save myself with complete and utter futility. You know you’d relish in the sight.”
His hands twitched. The crowbar started to lower.
“Think about how much fun it would be to finally break me.”
As sick grin filled his expression and he took a step toward me. Motty was just getting into position. He began to reach for my chains when a voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Mason!”
