Mason turned on his heel to see Hannah staring wide-eyed at the scene before her.
“Now,” I called to Motty, taking the opportunity the instant I felt Nova touch the barrier of my mind.
Motty slammed the lever down and the line went slack, dropping me the short distance to the floor. I shifted the moment my feet touched the ground, launching toward a still distracted Mason. He turned just in time for Nova’s paws to land on his chest, forcing him backward as I sprang toward Motty and my sister, putting myself between them and Mason.
He didn’t shift. He wouldn’t yet. Not when he still believed he was more powerful. At least that’s what I was counting on. As long as he kept underestimating me, I had an advantage.
‘Get Hannah out of here,’ Nova linked Motty.
Nova crouched, snarling as Mason got to his feet. As he turned to face us, I thought I saw fear in his eyes for the smallest of moments.
“Impressive,” he said, dusting himself off. “You weren’t supposed to be able to shift again.” He leaned down and picked the crowbar back up. “No matter. Just gives me more of a challenge.”
He lunged toward us. Nove dodged him easily, going in for a bite to his side but coming up short. The miss didn’t discourage her. She quickly pivoted and leapt back at him, swiping her claws furiously. This time, she made contact. Slashing down his arm and causing him to drop his weapon. Mason roared in anger and surprise. But he recovered in time to block Nova’s next attack.
Pushing her away, he shifted, leaving Nova and me face to face with Kahn. The bane of my existence for five years of my life. So many of my nightmares were of that animal. But, instead of fear taking over at seeing him again, it was anger. Rage at what he had done to me and at letting him torment me for so long.
Feeding off my anger, Nova pounced. So did Kahn. We clashed in midair, each of us snapping and clawing for purchase on the other. Caught in a tangle of teeth and fur, I noticed Kahn heading for Nova’s throat. In a perfect moment, I shifted. My much smaller human form slipping easily from his grasp and out of the path of his jaws. I rolled and shifted again, giving Nova control as we jumped to our feet.
While I felt a jolt of pride and exhilaration from my illusive maneuver, we were foolish enough to let our guard down, giving Kahn a window. Nova yelped as his sharp claws slashed down her side. She stumbled slightly, slowing enough to be stuck in Kahn’s path. He came at us again but was halted as a roar sounded from our opponent. Nova stumbled back, giving us some space. That’s when we saw what had caused his bellow.
The hook of the crowbar was embedded in Kahn’s flank. Motty stood a few feet away, breathing heavily from the effort. Kahn clawed at the metal impaling him but quickly gave up. Turning on Motty with a vicious snarl.
“Get out NOW,” Nova commanded as she leapt on Kahn’s back, regaining his attention.
He bucked against our weight. Nova Jaws held on to the scruff of his neck, the metallic taste of blood touched our tongue as we held on. This wasn’t an ideal position but we needed to give Motty the chance to get away. Still, Kahn used his larger size and greater strength flip us onto the ground soon enough. We landed hard on our wounded side, leaving us stunned for a split second.
That’s all it took and he was on top of us. Nova howled as Kahn’s jaws clamped down on our neck. She managed to turn enough to claw at his belly but he wasn’t releasing his hold. He had us and he knew it. I could feel the warm wetness running down Nova’s hind legs as her claws dug into Kahn’s flesh desperately. But his grip only tightened. Sending searing pain radiating through our jaw, neck, and shoulders.
She didn’t stop fighting as her vision began to blur and our strength began to wain. If we were going down, we’d take him with us.
But I didn’t want to die.
I was horrified at how little I could do. If I took over the shift, it would be over the moment I was human again. Kahn’s massive jaws would snap my neck in an instant. All I could do was give her what strength I had and keep her fighting.
It was getting harder. I didn’t know how much time had passed. I didn’t know if he was loosing strength or if it just felt that way because we had so little left. Still, Nova kept kicking. Tearing his flesh to ribbons.
I started to feel the last bit of energy slipping away as Nova struggled to maintain the shift. I held back a sob. Clearing my mind of everything but Lucas. Of every wonderful moment we’d shared together. I was preparing to take over the shift. To allow Nova to let go in peace. Both our thoughts went back to one thing.
‘Lucas…’
As soon as I took over the shift, Kahn’s weight lifted off me. I prepared for the final blow until air suddenly filled my lungs. I felt myself gasping and coughing up blood but it was more of a reprieve than my final breaths. The mixed sound of growls and snarls filled my ears and there were multiple footsteps nearby. I managed to roll over and relief washed over me.
“Rhonen…”
