Sutton’s voice broke through our frenzied attack. Tearing Rhonen from Kahn’s mangled body, I took control, shifting as I rushed to her. I fell to me knees and pulled her into my arms. A sob wracking through my body as I felt her heart beating against my chest. I’d been numb ever since I lost our connection. Now it was like all the feeling was coming back at once. All centered around that heartbeat.
I managed to pull back enough to look at her, holding her face in my hands. My lips finding hers like a beacon. I felt her wince from the impact but she returned my kiss nonetheless. Still, I managed to pull away, not wanting to cause her more pain. I settled for looking into the beautiful eyes of hers. Grateful with every fiber of my being that they were looking back at me again.
“Don’t you ever do that to me again,” I choked out.
Sutton laughed through her tears. “It wasn’t the plan,” she told me. “Luna Darcy… she was hurt…”
“She’s fine,” I assured her.
“Alpha…”
I instinctively pulled Sutton closer before looking up at Prince Raphe standing nearby. He tipped his head toward Mason, now shifted back from his wolf..
“He still breaths, Alpha,” the prince stated.
I tucked Sutton against my chest, blocking her view as I looked toward Mason. I didn’t know how he was still alive. Nova had fought hard and it showed. The strikes to his abdomen has left him torn to shreds. Internal organs hung from the gapping wounds. Blood pooled heavily beneath him. Then there was Rhonen’s work. The bloody gurgle did show he was still alive, but it would not be much longer.
But then again… he somehow survived a blade to the heart a few months ago. And after everything we had been through, the idea of prolonging his suffering just didn’t matter as much.
“Sit with her,” I told Raphe.
With a nod, he knelt down next her, encouraging Sutton to lean against him as I got up. As I walked toward Mason, I gave control to Rhonen, shifting as Mason’s eyes met mine. Still full of hatred and anger. Still full of defiance and fight.
Good. It was more satisfying this way. I would have been disappointed if he welcomed death even now.
Rhonen gave him one last low snarl as Mason’s garbled breathes became faster. We placed one giant paw on Mason’s head. With a single push of force, Rhonen crushed his skull with a loud crunch. He held it there for a few moments, making absolutely sure the life had left the pathetic piece of scum beneath us.
Finally, Rhonen stepped away and I shifted back. I should have been horrified but I wasn’t. It was gratifying. I was the one who killed Mason but Sutton stopped him for good. She could be proud of what she did here today without the nightmare of knowing she took a life. We both punished him for his crimes. This was lycan justice.
The moment was disrupted by a bloodcurdling scream echoing through the air.
“Noooo, no, no. You killed him.” I turned to see Hannah falling to her knees. “You bastard, you killed him. No, Mason, no.”
Her tears and sobs disgusted me. My hands fisted and I was finding it hard to care that she was Sutton’s sister. She was lucky that I had spilled enough blood for one day. It was the only thing allowing me to ignore her and return to my mate.
“Get her out of here,” I ordered.
Hannah jumped to her feet and rushed toward me. Max swiftly grabbed her as she spewed nonsense at us.
“You murdered him. How could you? I loved him and you murdered him,” Hannah screamed. “You heartless bastard.”
I froze, turning toward her. “Heartless? I’M HEARTLESS,” I bellowed. I closed the distance, yanking her from Max’s grasp by the throat, forcing her to look at Sutton. “Look at her. That’s what YOU did. You set up your own fucking sister. Your own flesh and blood. For a piece of shit that was going to kill you the moment he was finished with her. You’re a foolish, stupid little girl…”
“Lucas,” Sutton called as Prince Raphe helped her to her feet.
I dropped Hannah on the ground and rushed to her. She fell against me but was managing to stand. She was already starting to heal, thank the goddess. But she would have a long way to go. I cupped her cheek with my hand and she leaned into it.
“I hate you,” Hannah hissed between quiet sobs. “You couldn’t let me have him, could you? You just couldn’t let me be happy.”
I had more to say to that but Sutton stopped me.
“Don’t bother,” she insisted, looking over at her sister. “She’s already decided what she’s going to believe. And it’s not that Mason was a monster. She won’t believe that he used her. Or that he was disgusted by her. She won’t believe that the last words of the man she supposedly loved were to describe how he was going rape and murder her right in front of me.” Sutton managed to limp closer to Hannah, looking down on her with numb resignation. “No, she wouldn’t believe any of that.”
She started to walk away but I could she was struggling. I stepped in and swept her up in my arms, not wasting anymore time on the selfish little child on the floor. Sutton didn’t protest. Snuggling in against my chest as I carried her out of that horrible place.
